interview JAG   (July 2006) | Written By: Rud

Watts, CA is fast emerging once again as a hot bed of unsigned talent and skills both from a lyrical angle and a production standpoint. Today we are proud to present an artist born in Watts before moving later in life to South Central LA.

Jag
was born Ryan Joyner, raised in a single parent home by his mother. Music was not in his mindset until 1994 when he heard the Notorious B.I.G's hit single "Juicy" on the radio - it was then he felt a desire to embrace the culture and attempt to tackle the music industry as he grew up.

In his younger years Jag found himself not interested while in school he didn't see it as a priority. Jag explained to us; "I would pop in a tape and pretend I was performing on stage. As a youngin' you would always catch me in the streets rappin' a few bars."  Having written what he considers his first song at the age of ten he knew that becoming an entertainer would be an image he would want to portray.

By the time Jag was 18 he was introduced to someone that believed in him and embraced his style - someone who wanted to manage him. That led to him creating a crew known as 110%. Over a period of time things quickly seemed to change and plans we're not working out so he opted to move forward. Not letting it discourage him, Jag went out and met people that were also aspiring and up and coming. As a result he let go of the crew 110% and joined a new crew known as Watts City. As he quite simply explained to us; "Every great rapper has a great squad."

Over the years Jag has managed to learn more and ensure his creativity is a force to be reckoned with. An ability to storytell without compromising on quality he has developed a way of engrossing listeners into his lyrics; from songs that address his life thus far - to hood-tales and songs for the ladies - he has successfully blended the qualities that make a great artist. Working with various producers including 1500 [Dogghouse production], Klasic, and five-time Grammy nominated Ricc Rude he has been able to learn off some of the best in the business to refine his craft and make sure both his delivery and flow are of the highest calibre.

In the streets he is known as "The Beast" because of his aggression and attitude when it comes to his battling skills - as a result Jag just got back from NY where he has been battling 5 different MC's @ the famed "Fight Klub" and destroyed all of them. He will be back in August to battle T-Rex for the crown on MTV.

Having collaborated with fellow up and coming artists including other dubcnn featured artists; Bad Lucc, Halla & Stix, Jag told us what he wants to be next for him; "I plan on getting a deal and have longevity in the rap game, I don't want to be a one hit wonder, what stands out about Jag is that I'm a always do me."

The time is now for Jag it would seem, with a dedicated team behind him, influence and support from those around him as well as an incredible opportunity to win a title at "Fight Klub" he is on the verge of big things - remember where you saw the name first and check out the two bangers we have for download below to see what Jag is all about.
