interview B. JAMES  (August 2011) | Interview By: Justin Melo

Dubcnn spoke with Detroit born and Houston based emcee B. James, best known as a Scarface protégé for his work on Face’s last retail release, “Dopeman Music” where he appeared on two handfuls of songs. We contacted B. James earlier this morning when rumors of Scarface’s release from prison rumor began circulating. We’re happy to announce that B. James has CONFIRMED Scarface’s release! Scarface spent nearly a year in prison for unpaid child support charges. James also had some choice words for the lack of support he feels Scarface received while incarcerated.

Questions Asked By: Justin Melo

Dubcnn: So let’s get right to it. Is Scarface a free man?

B. James: Yes, I can confirm that Face [Scarface] is a free man as of this morning! It’s a beautiful day in Houston and in hip-hop as a whole.

Dubcnn: Wow, that’s wonderful to hear. Now that he’s free, how did you feel about the time he spent incarcerated?

B. James: I was really disappointed just to see him as a friend in the situation that he was in. I’m glad it’s in the past though, he’s a free man and we’re gonna’ push harder than ever before. On another note, it was sad to see since he’s a legend in the game. A lot of people in the rap game didn’t support or rally up to help him in his time of need and I feel like it should have been that way because he’s shown love to so many people throughout his career.

If it was any other type of superstar, we always support our brothers like T.I., Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, when they got locked up, we rallied up and yelled “free them” but why didn’t we do the same for Uncle Face? I feel like everything will work out the way it’s supposed to anyways now that he’s free though. Things are about to change.

Dubcnn: How did Scarface discover you in the first place?

B. James: Face discovered me through a mutual friend. One of my partners from way back knew somebody that knew Face. They told him about my music and they set it up for us to meet. When we first met, he kind of brushed me off like “I ain’t tryna’ listen to any more CD’s” so I was straight forward and told him I’ll give you a CD and you can throw it out the window if you don’t like it, but I guarantee once you put the first song on you’re gonna’ be jamming. He went inside the house and put my CD on he thought it was jamming. The relationship started from there.

Dubcnn: So how long was it before you met Face to the time you began working on “Dopeman Music” together?

B. James: It was about a year. When I met him, we hooked up again and he gave me a track which ended up being “In My Blood” off the “Dopeman Music” project. That’s why I just shot a video for that one; y’all can check it out online. It had been about a year and I had already done a solo mixtape. I still had the beat he gave me so I did the track and told him he had to hear it. He called me back and told me to come to the lab and bring the track.  He heard it and said he couldn’t have done any better and he wanted to do a whole project with me. Of course I was down for that and we did the whole “Dopeman Music” project together.

Dubcnn: And what was it like working on “Dopeman Music” with him?

B. James: It was history in the making basically because Scarface never did a mixtape in his whole career. And plus this project was so raw and he was presenting some new cats to the game. He presenting The Product before that but it had been a long time coming for Face to drop some new raw and uncut music for the streets. He scooped me and my man Monk Kaza up to be the main workers on the project. It was history in the making man. We spent a whole month in the studio together. A lot of cuts we made didn’t even make the CD but we made dope tracks all around.

Dubcnn: Tell us about your upcoming project “A Young Vet” which is dropping early Fall.

B. James: “A Young Vet” to me is that piece of material that’s gonna’ get me out there for more ears to hear. I’m in a different zone now coming off of “Dopeman Music.” People expect me to be better than I was on “Dopeman Music” so I most definitely have improved. It’s my proudest project to date because it’s a personal project.

It’s called “A Young Vet” because I feel as if life is a game, than I’m a young vet. If there’s a war outside, I’m a young vet. I’m young and I’m smart, I’m just a young vet out here, and plus my flow is like a Corvette so I put it all together. I’m a young vet. Each song tells a story about life and y’all are gonna love this project; make sure you check it out when I release it this Fall. Of course I’m working with Scarface on there. “A Young Vet”, it’s going down.
