The number of mixtape DJ's is huge at the moment. One of the standout DJ's in
the south is DJ Coolbreeze. From B.G. to UGK to Pastor Troy, DJ Coolbreeze has
worked with the biggest stars from the dirty dirty. Dubcnn.com caught up with
DJ Coolbreeze to talk about the mixtape scene, his upcoming mixtapes, his
production team and more
“Outside of DJ Drama, I feel like I am the next big DJ out the south. I am
a dirty south DJ and I want to lock down the south. I just listen to the great
DJ's of the past and present, i.e. DJ Jelly, DJ Goldfinger, DJ Drama, etc.
First thing, I try to come up with is mixtapes that have never been done, for
example the Return of the Hotboyz, Return of the Kings (UGK) and The WGM N.I.L.
(Next In Line). Then I make sure my artwork is top notch and same goes for
packaging. That's why I package my mixes in the big cases. So whenever someone
buys a Coolbreeze mix they feel like they are buying an album.”
“When I was younger I wanted to be a baseball player or a sports agent. I
could have played college ball but I chose to go to Morehouse. They didn't
have a baseball team at the time. Right now my main job is just mixtapes, but
I am working on getting a radio show and going back to working in clubs. There
are haters everywhere in Atlanta, but I will say it will be with the other
DJ's in the Untouchables, DJ Kizzy Rock and DJ Goldfinger.”
On a lot of mixtapes Coolbreeze has at least one or two exclusives, but what a
lot of people don't realize is that between mixtape DJ's there's like sort of
a cold war going on about these exclusives.
“Most of them are e-mailed or mailed to me, but I do know a lot of artists
and labels. So sometimes I just go get it from the studios. There have been
times when I get a song and I tell the labels that if they give it to anybody
else before I release it then I won't put it on my mix. I get pissed when my
mixes have what everybody else's have on it. I like being exclusive.”
It's a trend that artists host mixtapes. Not only their own, but also
compilation mixtapes. “This goes pretty much the same way as I get
exclusives. Most artists e-mail me or call me and tell me they want to host.
We just put it together from there. Sometimes I hit the artists up. It just
depends on the situation.”
“I have a team of producers that will be hitting the scene soon. Each
producer I have on my team has a different feel to them. Dirty south, east
coast, west coast, sampling, etc.” This team of producers will hit the
scene with mixtapes and/or albums with rappers rapping over their beats and
instrumental mixtapes/albums. DJ Coolbreeze is not a producer himself, but he
will try his hand at producing at one point. “All the great producers have
their origin in DJ-ing, so when I try my hand at it, I'm sure I will be a
decent producer.”
“I have a new mixtape series coming out real soon with DJ Sosa (an A&R
monster over at So So Def) called Doin Numbers. Also, I have several mixtapes
coming out with the "Future stars" out of Texas. And Local Legends 3 is in the
near future and of course I am gonna do another "Official" mixtape since the
first one went over so well.”
“I want to give a few shout outs. I want to shout out the Untouchables,
Kizzy Rock and Goldfinger. Also, I want to thank all the people that support
me.”
