interview DJ CRAZY TOONES  (May 2007) | Interview By: Eddie Gurrola

Dubcnn recently caught up with the WestCoast legend DJ Crazy Toones for a brief yet informative interview. Last year DJ Crazy Toones released the acclaimed “CT Experience” mixtape and ever since has been working alongside long time co-collaborators Ice Cube and WC creating a DVD to accompany the CD. We get the details on how Dah Dah and Robert Red came forth with the idea and how it was set in motion, we also get the lowdown on how they got all the artists involved. DJ Crazy Toones tells us once again why he created the “CT Experience” as well as talking about what he is currently up to; including the impending WC release, the new Ice Cube record and one of his own.
As always we have both the transcript and the audio for you to check and please feel free to send any feedback regarding the interview to: eddiegurolla@dubcnn.com

Dubcnn: We’re here with DJ Crazy Toones, we’re gonna do a quick little interview. So, your mixtape “CT Experience” was very well received, a lot of people said it was one of the best mixtapes ever made, on our site at least. So, are you getting the same type of responses, how do you feel about it?

Yeah, everybody love the mixtape. I’ve been making mixtapes for a long time. The “CT Experience” was the first CD I ever made, I used to really make mixtapes. The last one I did was in 1996, it was called “That Nigga’s Crazy Part 1.” You know, it was just like really for the neighborhood, you know, just getting down for everybody out in LA. But, umm, I’m glad everybody liked “It’s A CT Experience.” I did it, the reason I did it, was because I was kind of burnt out on the unfinished demos that people was callin’ mixtapes, there really wasn’t no mixing, no skills or nothin’. I don’t know if you hear somebody with a microphone with echo on the microphone, yellin’. I just got tired of that, I had to show them how it was really done.

Dubcnn: Hell yeah! We liked it a lot man. Alright, so where did you come up with the idea to do a DVD of your mixtape?

I got a homeboy named Dah Dah that’s been filmin’ us from day one, we all kind of came up together, you know, after the N.W.A. and us came up, we all kind of sat down, you know, makin’ records and stuff and going to clubs and stuff in LA. He was always a cat that was always down around us and filmin’, and he asked me if I was down to do it, Dah Dah and Robert Red, asked me if I was down to go ahead and [do it.] They said they was listening to it, and it sounded so visual to them, it sounded so visual to them as to where, how did I feel about making a DVD, like video visual to it? And I was like, I said “Hell no,” I wasn’t down with it. I took a nap, and I woke up, and I was like, “Yeah let’s do it, let’s go ahead and do it.” So, that’s how that came about, and it came out dope.

Dubcnn: Alright, it came out awesome! So, its really cool because its literally like a video mixtape, like a DVD where you’re actually watching a mixtape. So, how did you go about getting all of the guests together for that, and put the whole thing together actually?

Well, I mean, I ain’t never had no enemies far wise as in California with anybody, everybody is my homeboy that was on my mixtape. They showed the support, and they got on my mixtape, they did it for me, just, you know, getting down for Crazy Toones. And, I put it out there like that, I told them I wanted to shoot the video to it, they was with it, they was with the business, and they put it together, and they came out like how you said.

Dubcnn: Yeah, it was great! Did you have fun recording the DVD and all that, like just going out there and making all the different videos? Were you there, even during [videos you weren’t in]?

Yeah, I had a ball man! I had a ball. We did it, we had fun, it was really, Dah Dah, really didn’t wanna stop, he didn’t wanna stop for a while, he was like “in, in, in,” doing different things, and I was like, “Man we gotta wrap it up,” you know? “It’s been a year, we gotta wrap it up, come on!” He always wanted to keep, you know, putting more, adding more to it, and I was like “Man, let’s just let it go, and put it out.” So, we had a good time homie, everything was good, everybody showed love from Snoop Dogg to Cube to Ren, to, you know, my brother WC, also supported me, you know, everybody on there, showed love man! And we went out and guerilla’d everything. We didn’t get no permits or nothin’. We went and we just guerilla’d the whole DVD. Everything.

Dubcnn: Alright. Well, do you have any plans for doing anything else this year, maybe another mixtape or something like that?

Yeah, yeah right now though, I’m just makin’ records, putting this WC record together, its off the hook. We’re four songs away from completing it, then we going to finish Cube’s record. We gonna get started on Cube’s record, the record is called “Raw Footage.” You know, we just concentrating on putting records out on WC and Ice Cube. And I’m gonna pick the drum machine back up again and start doing beats again too. I just really ain’t have the time to do it, but I’m starting to get crackin’ back on the drums. But, my input far wise on the WC and Ice Cube records, you know I do all the scratches, all that.

We get a beat from somebody, but we come together and produce the record, meaning that we the ones that dictate how the song comes on, when the break comes, how long the rap, you know, that kind of thing. Just basically composing the whole record, and the sequencing of the album. So that’s all I’m on is doing that right there. But, I’m gonna get back on the drum machine ‘cause the beats and stuff now, like in 2007, sound like the beats we used to make in like 1985. No disrespect, but it sound like the simple sounding kind of beat.

Dubcnn: Yeah, like the 808 and all that?

Yeah, like the 808 sounding kind of beat, this stuff is simple to do, and I’m gonna get back on the drum and get crackin’ with that.

Dubcnn: Definitely, we’re looking forward to hearing some more production from you man. Alright, so we’re looking forward to WC’s new album, Ice Cube’s new album, and some new stuff from you. So, is there anything else you wanna say to everyone at Dubcnn?

Yeah, I’m puttin’ out a record too. When? I’m not too sure when I’m doin’ it, but I’ma do it and put out a West Coast record. It’s gonna be straight from our coast, you know, a celebration for the West Coast. And, all you mixtape DJs, just step your game up man. You know, I’ve got a lot of love for everybody but, I don’t tolerate wack shit, so, you know, step your game up man, and let’s keep it crackin’.

During the interview DJ Crazy Toones asked that we could issue this Disclaimer in relation to all the enquires he has been fielding in relation to the sale of the “It’s A CT Experience” DVD.

What’s crackin’, this is DJ Crazy Toones. “It’s A CT Experience” the DVD, it’s out right now, it ain’t in no stores. IT AIN'T IN NO STORES, because it ain’t for sale. It’s not for sale, it’s just promotion, just giving you a taste of all my homeboys that need to get their shine. So, the only way you can get it is, I guess f-ck with your local bootlegger, whoever, trying to take a little punk ass money. But, we just put it out there, just to show, you know what I’m saying, we are running this shit, this is our coast, we are the West Coast. So, we just did it on the strength, just to give it to y’all, so y’all could see some real quality shit. Quality shit, you know what I’m sayin’? And, we took it to the next level, because, we took it to another level far wise as individuals because, you know, downloading and shit is at an all-time high right now man, so we just opened these doors, and showed these record labels that they’ve got to step it up and do something different.

So, “The CT Experience” is not for sale. It’s for promotional use only. So, get at me if you know me, get at me, I’ll shoot you some, or, you know what I’m sayin’, catch that shit on your local Youtube, loc. That’s it.
