interview DOT SILLY (June 2010) | Interview By: Chad Kiser

Sure you might think Brooklyn emcee/producer Dot Silly is a gimmick when you read his name but the young artist is anything but. Intensity, grittiness and dynamic are three words that come to mind when I first gave him a listen. His mixtape Silly City Vol. 2 made some waves recently with his brand of aggressive bravado and clever punchlines. If you ask Silly though, he’d tell you Vol. 2 was the preamble for what’s yet to come.

With Silly gearing up for the release of Silly City Vol. 2.5, we’re pretty sure the Fahrenheit won’t be the only thing heating up the streets this Summer.

In order to introduce the budding East coast artist to you, Dubcnn took out some time to chop Dot Silly about his music including who he thinks is ill on the Left coast. If you don’t know, now you know.

Dot Silly

Dubcnn: What's up Silly? Tell readers who you are and where you are from.

What's good Dubcnn thanks for having me. My name’s Dot Silly also known as Silly Dinero out of Brooklyn, New York.

Dubcnn: When did you realize hip hop was going to be your way of life?

I actually wrote my first rap at the age of seven, but I would say I really started writing and recording at the age of 11 – that’s when I started to love music. I wasn't like other kids my age. I never played a lot of sports - I took karate for a few years [laughs] but music was my vice.

Dubcnn: How do you feel your brand of hip hop sets you apart from other up-and-coming emcees trying to get put on?

I consider my brand of hip hop to be a crossroad where soul meets poetry meets hip hop [laughs]. I’m what Kanye would of been if he grew up in Brooklyn.

Dubcnn: What three words would you use to characterize your music?

Damn, he's dope [laugh].

Dubcnn: Your recent mixtape Silly City Vol. 2 featured many cuts that you produced. Was producing you own tracks part of establishing who Dot Silly is all around? Explain.

Yeah most definitely, I wanted to show people not only can I spit a mean 32 or create a club banger but also produce hits. I don't consider myself a hip hop artist but an all around artist because I write all genres. God gave me many talents. I'm just trying to showcase them all.

Dubcnn: Who did you grow up listening to on the west coast? Is there any artist who you could say influenced your music?

Growing up Ice Cube was my favorite rapper from the left coast. Actually an Ice Cube song was the first hip hop song I heard that made me want to rap. But Snoop, Game, Crooked I and, of course, Dr. Dre have inspired or influenced me in some kind of way. They all have characteristics that left an imprint in hip hop and imprint on the west, which I plan to do as well. Nipsey Hussle is dope too. I would like to work with him sooner or later.

Dubcnn: Is there anyone out west on their come up like you who you are a fan of? What new up-and-coming artists would you like to make music with?

Well like I mentioned Nipsey Hussle is that dude right now out west. I think his music is on point and speaks to me the most. Same time I like what Crooked I has done individually as well as a member of Slaughterhouse.

Dubcnn: I know you told me you have a Silly City Vol. 2.5 coming out soon. When can we expect that to drop?

Silly City Vol. 2.5 should be available by the closing of May. I'm aiming for May 25th. It actually was suppose to drop last month but a few minor set backs hindered it. The more time I have the more time there is to make sure I put together something just as dope or better than Vol 2.

Dubcnn: How will the music on 2.5 differ from what we heard on 2.0?

Well Vol. 2 had more of an album feel to it, a lot of home grown production. With 2.5, there is definitely more of a street mixtape feel to it. It’s called 2.5 - The Blackout Edition, where I'm taking a bunch of industry beats and blacking out lyrically on them just to show I don't only make songs but lyrically I'm a beast but I’m a let the people judge of that [laughs].

Dubcnn: Tell the people where they can find you.

The people could find me on my personal blog DotSilly, which is a work in progress but I try to update it as much as possible. I'm also on Twitter and on a bunch of hip hop sites – just Google me! [Laughs] it feels so good to be able to say that.

Dubcnn: Any last words?

Yeah, thanks for having me. Shouts out to the left coast for showing me love and just keep it locked in with Dot Silly. I have a lot of good music coming.
