After one listen to his street album
“Respect It Or Check It” [Download
Here], it should be clear to most that Virginia-based MC Dout
Gotcha! is hungry to jump to the top ranks of the rap game. For Dout, it’s
been a long journey through the music industry that’s put him in his current
position as a solo artist. With many exciting projects in the works that
will elevate him to the next level, it won’t be long before Dout is exposed
to hip-hop fans around the world as an authentic voice of Virginia.
Dout’s interest in hip-hop began at an early age. "Really being around the
culture as it was evolving was crazy. I just had a knack for rhyming,
putting together words, and beats.” After working as The Clipse’s DJ in the
early 2000s, he eventually crossed paths with Luis “LuLu” Torres, the CEO of
B.Y.I. Entertainment. “LuLu was the first dude I met from L.A. [We] clicked
instantly. LuLu invited me to L.A. with open arms like, ‘Come out here and
do your thing,’” recalls Dout.
After branching out to develop himself as an artist, Dout linked up with
B.Y.I. producer Rome to work on what would eventually become the “Respect It
Or Check It” street album. “It started out as a mixtape, but I got to the
point where I was tired of doing mixtape material.” Because of this, Dout
and Rome went back into the lab and formed freestyle cuts into
well-developed original songs. “Working with Rome is always a surprise! He’s
like an old head in a young person’s body. He always comes with the
unbelievable. This street album sounds like the score to a movie or
something. Everything he does is on a major level.”
Due to the popularity and critical acclaim of “Respect It Or Check It”, Dout
currently has an online distribution deal on the table to re-release the
project digitally. He’s also got a new mixtape with New York
mixtape DJ Superstar Jay titled “They Lying: The Virginia Story.” “We’ve got
25 cuts on there, original songs and freestyles. Whatever you’ve seen from
Virginia, however you may have thought it was from other previous acts who
have came out or whatever, they lyin’! That ain’t how it is. This is how it
is. [On] this mixtape, I’m telling you exactly what’s going on in Virginia
on a day-to-day basis, and [I’m] running it down to you on how we do
things.”
Dout Gotcha! fans can also look out for a mixtape/street album from The
Mozzarella Brothers, a group between Dout and fellow Virginian Gutter. Of
course, you can also look forward to hearing more music with the B.Y.I.
camp. “You can expect tons of more work with B.Y.I., Rome, & Omar Cruz,”
assures Dout. “Me & Omar are gonna do a mixtape together too. Omar has his
own genre; he has his own lane.”
With many major projects coming down the pipeline, Dout Gotcha! is poised to
do it big in 2008. Whether you’re feeling his style or not, you need to
“Respect It Or Check It.”
