interview FOCUS... (November 2010) | Interview By: Chad Kiser

Sabrina Hale, of Hoopla Media Group - n behalf of Dubcnn sat down with mega-producer Focus, who made a cameo appearance on last night’s episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. In the episode, Kandi Burruss is seen attempting to coach Kim Zolciak on the vocal arrangement of her next aspired single “The Ring Didn’t Mean A Thing” while in the studio with producers Focus, Blue and Selasi.

Kim, the notorious former mistress of her married lover known as “Big Poppa”, struggles to emulate the challenging vocal pattern Kandi demonstrates and blames it on the track, saying she’s just “not feeling it,” which ultimately spurred a cat fight between the wanna-be pop star and the Grammy award-winning songwriter, producer and singer, Kandi Burruss.

In some quick coffee-talk, Focus weighs-in about working with the reality star and what really went down behind the scenes.

Dubcnn Exclusive – Focus...

Dubcnn: Your face expressions were hilarious during Kim Zolciak’s recording session. Obviously, you couldn’t speak your mind at the time, but your reaction seemed to reflect the same thoughts as everyone else in the room. I’m dying to hear what you were really thinking while she was singing?

I honestly had no idea the camera was on me at the time and only thing that was going through my head was ‘this might take a bit longer’ -- the studio sessions – ‘then we had planned.’

Dubcnn: No one is coming out and just saying it. So just to be clear, without sugar-coating, what do you really think about Kim Zolciak’s singing voice?

She has found a niche for what she does, but she’s not a singer. That’s my honest opinion.

Dubcnn: What was the conversation like between all of you in the studio after Kim left that day?

If you saw the episode, you can see that I was really trying to just stay quiet and not feed into the gossip aspect of the show. At least she’s attempting to live her dream, and I definitely can’t knock that.

Dubcnn: You saw in the show tonight that Kim later slammed the track, saying that she needed her next song to be ‘a hit’. What do you think about her comments?

I have a great support system because, at first, I did get upset about it. But, after talking to my wife and brother, I got my head back on straight. Kim and Nene were both critical. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Dubcnn: Do you think she really made those comments because she was intimidated by the vocal difficulty of the song?

In my opinion, I do think that the difficulty of the melody put her in an uncomfortable place. I knew it might be a bit difficult for her, but she asked for a ‘song’. I try my best to make great music.

Dubcnn: How did that whole situation play out behind the cameras? Did Kandi tell you right away that Kim dissed the song?

I pretty much knew how she felt about the song. I told Selasi and Blue I had a feeling that Kim didn’t dig the track.

Dubcnn: How far do you think she will go in the music industry?

Insert 5th Amendment here…

Dubcnn: How much of an impact do you think that Kandi Burruss had on the success of Kim’s first single “Tardy for the Party”?

Kandi is a vet. She hired the right producer, honed in on the right sound, and coached Kim the right way on how to attack the song. Anyone can have an idea about or for a song but it takes a real professional to bring that idea to life.

Dubcnn: What do you think about the fact that Kandi was never properly paid for her work on Kim’s debut single?

I think that is blatant disrespect. I don’t like doing spec or unpaid work since this is the way I earn a living and support my family. I believe once the job is done, everyone should be compensated for his or her hard work.

Dubcnn: Okay, bottom line: can you see yourself riding to Kim’s next single, or any of her upcoming music for that matter?

As Kim put it, her ‘fans’ expect a certain sound from her. I just hope we did the song justice.
