interview GEES EXTORTION (October 2011) | Interview By: Chad Kiser

Emerging New York rapper Gees Extortion is making his share of noise on the East coast since he began recording his debut LP, Organized Rhymes: The Original Mixtape, which is slated to drop on October 25th courtesy of his independent label, Real Radio Records.

Those of us in the know respect Gees’ rap skills and the intense energy in which he performs and delivers in every line he drops. With the release of his debut, the Brooklyn artist intends on lyrically shaking down weak rap cats by turning his past crimes into rhymes.

With production from the likes of former Dr. Dre protégé Focus, Illmind, and Jahlil Beats, Organized Rhymes is sizing up to be quite the introduction in Hip Hop for Gees.

Dubcnn got a moment to interview the emerging emcee and chopped it up about his upcoming LP, connecting with Focus, and his West coast influences. Read all about it.

Dubcnn: What's good Gees, please introduce yourself to our readers....

What up Westside? You are now rockin’ with Gees Extortion, straight out of Brooklyn, New York - Real Radio Records! It's good to know that folks on the other side of things are feeling me. I'm highly appreciative.

Dubcnn: We know you're about to drop your debut LP, Organized Rhymes: The Original Mixtape, on October 25th. Talk to us about the whole process of putting together the project, what we can expect to hear on it, and how you decided on the name of the project?

The project is a little different than other projects. I entitled it Organized Rhymes so fans and people in general could understand my name Extortion; basically a conversion from crimes to rhymes, I am extorting this industry lyrically.

I subtitled it The Original Mixtape because the LP consists of only original music. It's easy for anyone to rap over an industry beat so for my first project I wanted to showcase my talents and passion on from an original point of view. Mainstream beats help rappers, emcees help beats.

Dubcnn: I read you had production from former Aftermath and Dr. Dre protégé Focus on the project. How did that come to be?

Basically my team is behind getting me the production from industry producers. They came across a sick beat Focus had produced in the process and I wound up in the studio with emerging femcee Nitty Scott, MC to lay the vocals down - shouts to Nitty, she really doing her things.

I like her style, so we reached out to her for the track. The outcome was phenomenal. We leaked the song in anticipation of our release date. The song is entitled “Top Spot.”

Dubcnn: Any other notable features or producers on Organized Rhymes?

I have two tracks produced by !llmind and another by Jahlil Beats. The only other feature is from talented up-and-coming R&B sensation Vin Keatin on the project. I also have some crazy production from up-and-comers like Clipsmoke, S’pply & D’mand, and Hala-X just to name a few. It’s gonna be crazy, yah haven't heard hip hop like this in quite a while.

Dubcnn: You're from Brooklyn, and there are many rappers from your borough who I'm sure influenced your music, however, growing up were there any rappers on the West Coast that you grew up listening to? Are there any in particular who you could say influenced you?

Most definitely, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and the rest of the NWA – anyone looking to extort the game like I am has to be up on NWA [laughs]. I always liked Pharcyde’s music – their content was always on point. Growing up in the 90s you had to love Snoop, Too Short – who I make reference to on a hook in one of my songs – and, of course, Cypress Hill, as Latinos they established a lane for themselves and also influenced how I perceived the game.

Dubcnn: Give us your top three favorite albums from West Coast artists?

My top 3 LPs from the West would have to be Dre’s The Chronic, Chronic 2001, and Snoop’s Doggystyle. That answer might be cliché but that’s why they’re classic albums. I also liked the Alkaholiks debut LP, 21 & Over, they had an East coast flow and vibe that I gravitated to.

Dubcnn: Is there anyone out West on their come up like you who you are a fan of?

He’s fairly more established than I, but I would like to do a track with Tyga from Young Money. I know he from Compton, and I think his music is pretty dope. Dubcnn gotta help me make that happen [laughs].

Dubcnn: Are you planning to tour and perform out here? What's in the works?

I would love to perform out West, we looking to get out there sometime next year, maybe Summer 2012. At this moment I’m rockin out in my city and generating a strong buzz from here to there - expansion is the key!

Dubcnn: Any last words? Let the people know where they can find you.
