LACE CADENCE(April 2011) | Interview By:
J Double If you’re familiar with the
All
New DUBCNN Radio Show then you might be familiar with the
latest single from Lace Cadence’s entitled “Fire” the smooth club track and
even smoother vocals combine to bring listeners a new sound their sure to
enjoy.
DUBCNN had the opportunity to sit down with this refreshing new artist to
discuss his new music as well as his history in the game which includes
working with DJ Quik.
Dubcnn: First off thanks for taking the time to do this interview, so let’s
jump right into it…Let our readers know where your from as well as the
meaning behind the name?
I appreciate y'all reaching out! I'm born and raised outta Seattle,
WA and the name Lace Cadence was given to me years ago back in high school.
I used to tag the word “Lace” so everybody knew me as that. When I started
rapping I was into rappers like Mikah 9, Aceyalone, Hieroglyphics etc…so I
was really into cadence, which led to people calling me Lace Cadence.
Dubcnn: With the current video/single “Fire” there appears to be a R&B vibe
but what how would you categorize your sound?
Well I grew up rapping so that’s always an influence on my music, but I
actually listen to a lot of different types of music. I think overall my
stuff will always have melodic singing and a little rap involved. I hate
categorizing things *laughs* I just go with good or bad, so I’d like to
think I make "Good" music!
Dubcnn: Your production is real smooth and easy to listen to, who handles
your production, in particularly with the new single “Fire”?
A majority of any music I put out will be a Blast Off Production. Blast off
is a production crew I started 14 years ago with 2 of my best friends to
this day, now there’s 4 of us and we are based out of New York and are
involved in a lot of stuff, you can check out our spot and
blog. The
whole “Launchpad” mixtape was blast off production.
Dubcnn: Prior to releasing the “Launchpad” mixtape how did you get your
start in the business?
I could talk forever on this one *laughs*. I started out in a group called
Elevated Elements during my high school years, Than in 2003 a group I’m
apart of called Clockwork signed a 5 album deal with the now defunct
Dreamworks Records and we moved to LA to record with DJ Quik who was inked
in to produce the whole first album. Long story short the whole urban
department at Dreamworks Records went under and our deal was cut - but that
was definitely my real intro into the music biz, I learned A LOT during that
time.
Dubcnn: Being that you’re from Seattle what is the current state of music
in the northwest area?
I’ve been in the northwest music scene for “hellaaaa” long and honestly this
is the best time I’ve ever seen for the northwest musically in terms of the
hip-hop scene. There’s really a lot of great music being made in Seattle,
it’s just hard to get noticed up here, so you REALLY gotta make some noise
and not be “too cool” to help the next man out as well. It’s a fine balance
which I’m not sure my city has mastered yet but were pretty damn close.
Dubcnn: What is on the menu after the “Launchpad” mixtape when can fans
expect a full-length retail project, and what will it be called?
I have 2 more free projects in the works. One will be my first venture doing
stuff outside of blast off with a producer named Teal, were gonna make a
straight up dance album - uptempo shit you can fist pump to *laughs*, and
I’ll also be putting out a project with House, one of the producers I
started “Blast Off Productions with. That’s will be like a Prince
influenced, 808 and R&B mash up. I'll release the first retail album after
those which is already done and titled "Do It". Not sure the dates but it'll
all be this year I’m hoping!
Dubcnn: Who are some of the influences you pull your inspiration from to
create your music?
These are hard for me to answer cause I could go on forever so I’ll just
name a few…Nirvana, Prince, J-Dilla, Sade, Isley Brothers, A Tribe Called
Quest, Cut Copy, Fiest, The Dream, Kaskade, Crystal Castles… I could go on
forever really...
Dubcnn: Who are some of the artists you’ve worked with since you started
in the game?
I've worked with DJ Quik, Jesse Johnson, Maino, Avery Storm, Eighty4 Fly,
Sol, Neema, Macklemore....honestly I don't even wanna name drop them all
*laughs* If you go on the Blastoff Productions website you can see our
credential.
Dubcnn: What it is that you want your fans to take away from your
current mixtape “Launchpad”
The “Launchpad” mixtape was my real solo introduction after being
in the group Clockwork for 8 years most people knew me for my rapping and
didn't even know I could sing that much, so I really wanted to show people
my solo stuff was gonna be a lot different than what people might have
expected. I made all the beats and wrote all the lyrics on this album so its
a really personal record, but bottom line I wanted it to be a record for the
ladies that my homeboys could bump too and I think I accomplished that!
Dubcnn: Any last words or shout-outs before we get outta here?
I just wanna thank y'all at Dubcnn again for doing this interview and
helping me get heard. Everybody be sure to hit

too! Shoutout my city SEATTLE and bigup my crews BlastOff & FlyWorld -
