Lee James Interview
A Dubcnn Exclusive
Kris Perry Photography: Experience Sound Thru My Lens Vol. 1 –
By Lee James (Review)

Dubcnn: How did this book come about it?
Well Kris Perry is my brother in-law and a gifted photographer. With
his absence this summer do to surgery I thought it would be dope to compile
his photos and create a book focusing on the Los Angeles hip-hop scene.
The book took about 6 weeks to complete and is filled with old school and
new school artists that have inspired me to be in the music game.KP was not
aware that I was working on this project so I got some copies and made and
made my way down to see him where I
presented him with his first published book. The smile was priceless and I
felt my job was
done. We are starting on a Volume 2 so be on the look out for that. Please
go out and cop the book..
Dubcnn: Aside from the visual aesthetic, are you involved in any
other aspects of hip-hop?
Well I do a little of everything from designing album covers/flyers for
artists, a music collector, help promote clubs, really what ever comes my
way I have my hands in it. You can check out some of my work at
CargoCollective
Dubcnn: How do you think the visual aspect of hip-hop culture ranks
in comparison to the music itself?
I think visual ranks on top as far as the reppin the latest trends in style
and fashion. I mean sometimes I will pick up a album not knowing anything
about the artist just based of the visual and look of the album sometimes
the album will be whack or fresh and right now the music these days seems to
be whack in the mainstream but the underground scene still seems strong
Dubcnn: I noticed that this book is noted as ‘Volume One’ is it safe
to assume that there will be a ‘Volume Two’ coming soon?
Yessir, be on the look out shooting for mid October 2012
Dubcnn: With the collapse of video outlets these days for artists,
what do you think artists, photographers and directors can do to put some
fire back into the visual areas of the business?
Wow that is a tough one with most artists not getting the right backing from
the labels it would be safe to say "Do It Yourself" if you have a creative
crew around you and endless locations it should be easy to create something
dope with a limited budget
Dubcnn: So what projects are next on the menu for you?
Working on a mix CD for March, got some new wood paintings witch I will be
selling coming out soon, more design work and a new book. There will be a
lot coming some I just can't speak on till they come.
Dubcnn: Are there any last words before we end the interview?
I word just like to say thanks to you J-Double and Dubcnn, Kris Perry,
E-Reece, Garfield Adams, Sy Smith, Nu MAGIK, DJ Rylo, Presto, Argyle, The
Whole Boom Box Family, Beat Swap Meet Crew, Los Angeles Art Walk and My Wife
and for the continued Support.
