MEECH WELLS (January 2008)| Interview By:
Eddie Gurrola Dubcnn linked back up with Meech
Wells for an exclusive video interview feature. We discuss his forthcoming
street album “The New West World Order 2”, which is guaranteed to be even
bigger than the first, and we also talk about his recent alignment with Ya
Boy. In addition to this, Meech tells us about exciting new ventures he’s
involved with, including major label negotiations, sponsorship
opportunities, and even his own reality show. Young Joker and Young Mack
Life pop in for a few moments as well. We had a lot of fun doing this
interview, so sit back, relax, and share a few laughs with Meech and the In
A Zone camp.
As always we have both the transcript and the audio for you to
check and please feel free to send any feedback regarding the interview to:

Dubcnn: We know that “The New West
World Order 2” is going to be bigger than the first one. Tell us a little
more about it…
Meech Wells: This time we’re digging a little deeper. We’re going harder,
we’re trying to make them stocks rise like they’re rising. We’re trying to
hit all of the angles with marketing of course, and everything is just
stepped up! You can look forward to bigger sponsors and more producs. It’s
gonna be a lot of mixtapes hittin’ y’all, without all the drops all over the
place; just straight up music.
Dubcnn: Why did you decide to put out these projects without DJ tags?
Meech Wells: I just want to show people that you don’t got to go to these
dudes. No disrespect to DJs – real DJs that’s spinning records in clubs,
online, and on radio. These mixtape DJs, they’re cool, I respect you guys,
but at the same time, it ain’t necessary to get in the game. If people want
to press up their own stuff and do their own marketing, [then they] can make
it happen, push it, and do the same thing they do. I’m showing [everyone]
that you can actually do it yourself. I’m a producer – I ain’t a DJ or a
mixtape DJ. I’m a producer doing this marketing.
Dubcnn: What gave you the idea to set these projects up as “Meech Wells
Presents” where you’re showcasing a bunch of new artists?
Meech Wells: You’ve always got to wait for a person’s scheduling when you’re
dealing with bigger DJs. They might put you out two months later [than
planned], and it makes us look like we aren’t doin’ nothin’. Now I can drop
any time I want to. Basically, it is what it is: “Meech Wells Presents”. I
can’t wait on the next man. It’s more fun to do music knowing you can hurry
up and drop it. Before, it was all kind of red tape. Now I’m gonna make the
labels rush. I’m gonna make everybody rush!
Dubcnn: Tell us about a typical day recording a track with the In A Zone
camp…
Meech Wells: A typical day…you know, we do beats, get high. He’s rolling a
big blunt right now…
Young Joker: This is Cali Kush! This sh*t is fire, so f*ck with us! We’re in
the building n*gga!
Meech Wells: So you know what I mean, we stay on that fire all the time, so
ideas is flowing. You know, the internet marketing, we’re hitting our
Myspace pages, checking numbers, and then we’re in the lab at the same time.
Sometimes I’m doing beats here, sometimes I’m recording vocals here and
doing a lot of promotion and shit. There’s mixtapes all over the place, a
lot of space here for writing. We’ve just got writers and different people
know what they’ve got to do. It’s all in house!
Dubcnn: “The New West World Order Volume 1” was a big success, and it’s
been garnering the attention of a lot of major labels…
Meech Wells: Yeah! First it started with one major, now it’s three. We’re up
to three, and probably counting! Anybody that’s interested needs to go on
and make their move fast. We’re just moving man. I ain’t trippin’ off it,
whatever happens, happens. I already know it’s gonna happen. We’ve got one
label in mind - it’s the mother of all labels - that we really wanna get
with. Then we’ve got our number two and number three picks. But it’s coming!
Dubcnn: You decided to give an up-and-coming artist their chance to shine
with our “Dubcnn & Meech Wells 12 Days Of Christmas Contest”. Why did you
decide to do that?
Meech Wells: Just to show that we’re reaching out. It ain’t just to one
hood, not even to just this city. We’re reaching out for talent in other
states and other countries if they’ve got it!
*Takes a blunt* This is real. We don’t just get high to do beats, we just
get high anyway! Shout out to Snoop Dogg! Every time I smoke a blunt, you
know I always think about you n*gga. *laughs*
Look out for a reality show maybe too! Once we get this deal, get our
mansion and all that, we’re gonna have everybody all in the same house and
make an album.
Young Mack Life: Watch out “Rob & Big”, we’re comin’!
Young Joker: Shout outs! “Sweets Magazine”, all you b*tches. Yeah, I called
you b*tches, so what! But look, I want all of y’all, all of y’all b*tches.
Joker loves all you b*tches with all his heart. Come f*ck with me. “Sweets
Magazine”, all you bitches, holla at me! I’m blowin’ up! Don’t catch me
before I’m too hot and I can’t see you because you’re too small.
Meech Wells: See, this guy is the Muhammad Ali of rap. He be doing that
Muhammad Ali sh*t. I’m high right now, or I’d be doing Muhammad Ali sh*t!
*laughs*
Dubcnn: So, the winner of this contest was Lil’ Lyn. You guys already
recorded the track. How did it turn out?
Meech Wells: Yeah, he’s tight man! There’s a possibility that something
could happen out of that. It’s gonna show the people that someone can really
come in and drop something serious. Everybody could have been in that
contest, but n*ggas probably didn’t think nothing was gonna happen. But
something happened, and this dude will be one of the people right in line
because he did his thing on there. So next time we have a contest, take it
more seriously. I’ma keep doing it!
Dubcnn: You’re always in the forum talking directly with the fans. How
important do you think it is to communicate with the people on the forum?
Meech Wells: It’s real important man, just to see what they like. If you can
hang in there without them just clowning you, then you must have something
good. I’m in there and they all support us. There might be a couple of
haters, I’m not even gonna speak on them, but eventually they’re gonna ride
nuts too. They’re gonna have to, they’re gonna fall in line.
Dubcnn: Let’s go a little more in-depth with “The New West World Order 2”.
Who are you going to have on there as far as guest appearances?
Meech Wells: We’re gonna have a lot of surprises, but I’ve got a couple of
people I can tell you. Eastwood, Young Joker, Young Mack Life, Ya Boy, 211,
The Game…
Dubcnn: How would you say the sound of the first one compares to this one?
Meech Wells: It’s going even harder. If a person’s going up a ladder,
imagine us going up maybe ten more steps. Everybody stepped it up – the
producers, the artists, the marketing, everything!
Dubcnn: What do you expect the fans to get out of the album when they listen
to it?
Meech Wells: Sh*t, just dope music like before! Dope sound effects, big
beats, hard lyrics - the same sh*t as [Volume 1] except upgraded. It’s
definitely harder. We’re coming with more fire that we left off the last one
on this one. Right after [Volume 2], we’ve got Eastwood’s mixtape “American
Hustler”, then we’ve got “The New West World Order Volume 3”! I’m waiting on
a couple of big features to come from our nice publicist, but it’s gonna
happen!
Dubcnn: You recently connected with Ya Boy. How did you guys link up, and
what happened when you started recording?
Meech Wells: We hooked up through a relative that’s working with the
organization. We hooked up, he was knowing my music, and I was knowing his.
It was mutual respect right away. We’re gonna do an EP of his sh*t that
we’re gonna release on Dubcnn, seven songs, just me and him.
Dubcnn: You’re working on the street album “Mayhem” with Young Joker as
well. That’s gonna be a monster when it hits everybody. Tell us about that…
Meech Wells: We’re just gonna come real fast with that one. Joker’s only
gonna be spitting over classic sh*t, and we’re gonna make sure we hand-pick
it. Now that I don’t gotta wait for DJs, it’s easy to just find a graphics
guy and flip it in. The sh*t’s coming like bam, bam, bam! When we get that
budget, watch out! We’ll be at home all the time eating cereal. Its gets
ugly because I’m already smoking kush every day.
Meech Wells: Shout out to Rockstar & Vitamin Water, love them drinks!
They’re sponsoring us, look out for that. I’m gonna be throwing mixtapes out
through them from now on, and LRG Clothing will be doing all my clothes, our
artists, and everybody.
Dubcnn: That should be really cool! Are there any other outside productions
you’re working on?
Meech Wells: I’ve got a couple of placements on MTV, and the “Entourage” TV
show on HBO. I stay doing TV sh*t, and were looking at some soundtracks
coming up. Like we said, the big label deal situation is coming up, more
sponsors, and more ways of getting the sh*t heard and getting everybody out
there! Basically, I’m doing the independent thing. Whatever comes up, I’m
with it.
Dubcnn: We’ve seen your presence grow a lot as an independent artist over
the last couple of years. For anyone that’s starting out, what would you
recommend?
Meech Wells: Get on Dubcnn, holler at
Eddie, and don’t make it so
complicated. Get your stuff up there, and if it don’t make it after that,
that’s not his problem or our problem. That just means you’ve got to be in
school a little bit longer.
If you’re doing beats, put people out. Do what I did! You see other people
fall in line. I ain’t gonna mention no names, but there’s other producers
trying to promote themselves now, and hopefully opening doors for a lot more
n*ggas to be doing that. Don’t wait man, you can make a name for yourself!
