MITCHY SLICK
(November 2010) | Interviewer J-Double
Dubcnn recently had the pleasure of talking with “HotShot” west coast
emcee and the Strong Arm Steady Gang’s breakaway star Mitchy Slick about his
beginnings, his music, his connections all over the globe; we even took the
opportunity to touch base with him on the infamous “Gangland” episode, with
so much going on all over the place there’s no way the rapper known as
Mitchy Slick will be able to stay away from the spotlight anytime soon.
Read on and enjoy. As always feel free to hit up
the forum with questions or comments.

Dubcnn: It’s been a minute now and I’m sure everyone is familiar
with your name, but late our readers know how the affiliation with
Strong Arm Steady come to be?
Initially I got down with Sir Jinx, then I got down DJ Jam, then Sir
Jinx turned me on to Xzibit around the time he was working on his album
“40 Days & 40 Nights” who then put me down with the Likwit Krew, and me
joining up with those cats allowed me the opportunity to establish
myself as an artist, then there was all the mixtapes we started doing to
make a name for ourselves and that all started in 02, 03 and so on….
Dubcnn: Alright, I wanted to know when your fans can expect to
hear another solo album from you and who will be on it?
I’ve got so much material that I’m ready to drop, I got an album with my
Bay Area familyDJ Fresh called “Feet Match the Paint” I’m also working
on an album with Menace (of Black Wall Street), I have another solo
album called “Gang Intervention” with production on there from names
like DJ Khalil, Blaqthoven, Criccet and Ecay Uno just to name a few,
last but not least there’s the Strong Arm Steady album “Arms & Hammers”
with features on it from Too Short, Kurupt, Game, KRS One, it’s gonna be
ridiculous, make sure y’all stay tuned for that album…COMING REAL SOON.
Dubcnn: I’ve noticed that you’ve been linking up with artists
all over the place, artists not typically associated with west coast
groups, what’s the reason for it and how did this all come to be?
Well before I started to drop any new music I had to go back and start
fresh and change my approach and my strategy to make sure these records
I’m doing, do what there supposed to do.
Remember there used to be a time, for example where it took a real
organic effort for artists to make a name for themselves, but nowadays
with the internet and downloading, an artist who could’ve been a nerd
growing up, can now take to the internet as an artist can create a buzz
for themselves on a viral level and become the next big star.
I had to learn that in order for me to do my thing I have to go where my
demographics are, for example in my city of San Diego there is no
outlets for urban market, or street shit at all. None of the radio DJ’s
are black or into that real street shit so quite naturally there’s no
real support for real street shit. But if you go down south the radio
DJ’s support that street shit, the strip joints are playing that street
shit and the people are supporting that street shit. So I had to take
that logic and apply it to my business approach.
Dubcnn: Most recently I saw you in a video called “Blood Niggaz”
with Menace of Black Wall Street and Lil Wayne, tell us about how do you
guys met?
First, I wanna give my props to Lil’ Wayne who as one of the top rappers
in the game has extended his hand to more west coast artists like
myself, G. Malone, Mack 10, and Menace, than any other artist out there
on the major level, period so I wanna make sure I put that out there.
But Menace was the one who actually hooked that up, he and I are real
good friends and he brought it all together and Lil Wayne came through
on some real homie type shit and we made a classic.
Dubcnn: Since the west coast seems to be making a comeback these
days, have you reached out to some of the artists on the rise, I know
you did a record titled “Paid My Dues” with Jay Rock, but I wanted to
ask if you’ve ever reached out to Nipsey Hussle at all? or tried to work
with him on anything?
Nipsey, actually got at me and told me he was a fan of my music, so we
definitely plan on connecting real soon, we just keep missing each other
right now. I’ve actually been working with his group the Slauson Boyz
(What’s up to H60dsta Rob) so you’ll definitely be hearing some real
soon.
Dubcnn: Shifting gears a bit, I also wanted to talk to you about
the infamous ‘Gangland’ episode that aired on television about your hood
‘Lincoln Park’ in San Diego?
Man, that ‘Gangland Episode’...was some real foul shit, those people are
devils, they cut out a lot of the positive things I had to say about the
community out of the episode and tried to make our people look bad and
negative and I wasn’t with that at all.
I will say, however that I got a lot of the footage that was left out of
that episode and I will make sure the messages that I wanted to send as
well as my voice get heard. I will make my point about getting our
people justice and touch on all the things that were left out of the
episode.
Dubcnn: I know you’re very busy with a lot of the things that
you’ve got going on with the music and touring, etc., so I wanted to
know if there will be any new releases this year off your label “Wrongkind
Records”?
Actually, I do…My artists Ric-Nutt and Ise B have an album about to drop
called “Syndicate Mobstars” real soon, so be on the look out for that.
Dubcnn: As always I like to have the artists tell our readers
how the fans can get a hold of themor how people can reach out for
collabos, etc.?
People can always hit me up on
Twitter,,
Facebook and
MySpace.
