interview MR. FINLEY (August 2011) | Interview By: Nima Etminan

Dubcnn took a trip to Las Vegas, NV to link up with Ghet-O-Vision/Def Jam signee Mr. Finley, who took us on a quick trip through the "real" Las Vegas, far away from the bright lights of the strip. He tells us about the struggles of being a rapper in Las Vegas trying to get recognition and how his grind ended up landing him a deal at Ghet-O-Vision/Def Jam.

He also talks about his friendship with fellow Ghet-O-Vision artist Yelawolf, who's also featured on Mr. Finley's current single "Oh Yeah". We talk about his current mixtape "Bacc On My Wease Mac Shit", being influenced by Devin The Dude and his plans for the future.

Read on and enjoy. As always feel free to hit up

Dubcnn: We're right here with Mr. Finley in Las Vegas. This isn't what people expect Vegas to look like! Where are we at right now?

Mr. Finley: We're in Las Vegas man, the heart of it. The Westside is right over there, that's where I was raised. Heading up that way is the real western part of town, and this is more like a cut-off area of everything, like the central part of town. But it's far away from the strip!

Dubcnn: So there's more to Vegas than the strip and the desert?

Mr. Finley: Absolutely man, it's real life going on around here. Ya'll got hoods, we got hoods, it's nothing different. It's the same, we just move a little faster out here, cause don't nothing close! You know, you just had a long weekend out here, you can vouch for me!

Dubcnn: There haven't really been a lot of rappers from Vegas coming up, why do you think that is?

Mr. Finley: If I had to give you a honest answer on why rap hasn't really taken off like that, I would really have to say that it's because not a lot of people are willing to go that extra mile. It's a lot of people that think the prize is supposed to come to you and they feel even more so because they're in Vegas and so many stars come to Vegas on the daily.

But they don't understand that when people come here, they're coming to party! They're coming to unwind and really turn their business sense off! So in order to get somebody like that's attention, that means you have to go extra hard, to make them recognize you when they're away from here and their business mind is on. That's always been my MO, I always wanted to do it here but at the same time, I knew that I couldn't just stay in one place. I had to venture out, I'm back and forth to L.A., Atlanta, New York.

You can't sit here and wait for something to come to you, you gotta go get it! That's probably why a lot of people are not on, but I hope that by me leading and setting this example, a lot of people will follow my lead and understand that it's not supposed to be just given to you - you gotta go get it!

Dubcnn: Now how did your grind take you to hook up with Ghet-O-Vision and Yelawolf?

Mr. Finley: I met KP, the owner and CEO of Ghet-O-Vision, back about 2008. He heard about me through the grapevine. Cause if you're good enough, the word carries around, if it's worth messing with. If they can't mess with you, they'll still refer you. So I had a few meetings here and there, Def Jam the first time, a whole bunch of stuff.

But when KP heard me, he was like "I get it". He was at Sony at the time, Yelawolf was over there at Sony with him, Ghet-O-Vision was over there at that point in time. I basically flew out to Atlanta, met Yela, I had already been put on to his stuff. That's when he was doing "Slick Ricky Bobby". We met and it was instant mutual respect for each other's craft and we get along also. So we had already done some joints back in 2008-2009.

Now I'm with Def Jam, and Yela's Interscope/Ghet-O-Vision/Shady and all that - congrats - but I'm Def Jam/Ghet-O-Vision. So we have our own separate entities, but at the same time we're still family. If there's anything I need or anything he needs, we're just a call away, he hits me on the phone or I hit him, we're fame like that.

Dubcnn: Yela is also supporting you on your new single "Oh Yeah", let people know about that.

Mr. Finley: The new single, Mr. Finley featuring Yelawolf, it's called "Oh Yeah", make sure to go check the video out, it's on YouTube and getting some great responses. XXL picked it up and put it on their website, now we're here rocking with dubcnn now. It's all work, we're grinding right now!

Dubcnn: The first time I heard about you was a funny story, because it was one of my girl's homies from Germany. We were listening to music and he was like "Have you heard of this dude Mr. Finley?" You had the video to "Blowin' That Indo" and I hadn't heard of you, so I put it on and I was hooked on it instantly, because it kind of reminded me of Devin The Dude.

Mr. Finley: Devin is one of my favorites in the rap game. Every good artist takes what great artist do and they put their own stamp and signature on it. There's nothing new, you can't say anything new, you can only improve on what's already been said. I've been taking qualities from great people that I respect and I've been putting my own stamp on it. I can definitely say that Devin The Dude is one of the major influences as far as how my rap style is, my laid backness, all of that. I mean, we smoke, but aside from that, his storytelling, his delivery is always cool, no matter what the situation calls for. He can cool it out.

Dubcnn: Then I saw you were from Vegas so I was like "Aight we gotta get him on dubcnn!" I talked to a few people, 40 Glocc gave you his stamp of approval -

Mr. Finley: Man shout out to 40, me and him are gonna do something soon. Anytime he's in Vegas we usually bump into each other, we've got mutual friends and all that. West wit it, keep doing your thang!

Dubcnn: So apart from the new single, what can people expect from you? You dropped a new mixtape?

Mr. Finley: Yeah my new mixtape "Bacc On My Wease Mac Shit", you can get it exclusively on HipHopRuckus.com. We just dropped that, it's my best work to date if you ask me! Get on my twitter, @MrFinleyMusic, download the mixtape, make sure you check it out, its real dope. I put my own stamp on it! Vegas baby, #MrFinley4Vegas.
