interview MR. MIDWEST (September 2011) | Interview By: Rud

Gearing up for the release of his first mix-tape following a smashing single, “Shorty is a weirdo”, featuring R & B crooner, Ray J, Mr. Midwest comes across as a man who knows what he is doing and uses his connections to get things done. Representing for his hometown of East St. Louis, he isn’t moved by the usual things that make an artist get up and leave their hometown – he’s humble, solid and appears to take care of everyone that is supporting him; his journey will be one worth watching.

Dubcnn Exclusive – Mr. Midwest

Dubcnn: Where are you originally from?

I’m from East Saint Louis, Illinois. Nelly & the ST. Lunatics are the biggest known acts from my City. Now there is really no one out here in my region that’s big or someone that we really look up to; that’s going to be me! I plan to take over that role.

Dubcnn: Who are your musical inspirations and influences?

I listen to a lot of Pimp C – a lot of down South music. I listen to Webbie & Boosie – Gucci Mane, Rocko, my influences are Tu Pac, of course, Biggie.

Dubcnn: Can you tell me about your style of music?

My style of music is country, ghetto; it’s just all the way out the way out there. It’s hardcore, gangster – all of the above. I’m well rounded and you cannot put it into one category. I get on some lovey-dovey or I can get on some street sh*t; I’m just well rounded.

Dubcnn: Where do you hope the direction of your music to go?

Well, really, the sky is the limit. We haven’t really locked in on a second single yet because we have a couple of them that we might want to put out for the second single so we just really haven’t gotten to the point of which one it is going to be.

Dubcnn: What is your fan-base like?

My crowd, I would say, is 15 and up. Some kids know about too much stuff anyway so they’re going to listen to it regardless. I have my City on lock and I’m taking over my City. I’m doing shows at Car Shows. I’m in videos and clubs. Everybody just rolling with me in the City and I’m trying to spread out so that I can get more people involved in what I’m doing and have them see my vision of what I’m trying to do.

Dubcnn: What is the label you’re with?

I’m with Official Music Group.

Dubcnn: How did you link up with your label management?

The CEO is Isadore was introduced to me by my cousin. I had this CD & my Cousin gave it to him – he listened to it & a couple of weeks later he flew out here from California, met me and we flew back to California, made music and talked about doing a single & getting everything ready. We talked about how we were going to go about getting this money.

Dubcnn: Do you feel moving out of St. Louis is a must to advance?

No, not really but you can’t sit still and try to do stuff with people in your own City cause some people are going to hate on you. You’ve got to go outside of the box sometimes – you’ve got to see what else is out there. If I were to just stay here, I’d never know what would happen – I wouldn’t probably have a single with Ray J. I wouldn’t even be talking to you right now!

Dubcnn: Are you doing shows at this time?

I’m currently doing shows with Ray J for the song that we have together – the crowd goes crazy for the song, they love it. I’m getting a great feedback from the crowd, everybody is loving it. I haven’t really done any songs in the Mid-West though. I’ve been doing shows in Las Vegas, California – not really here; more out there than here.

Dubcnn: How did you link with Ray J?

Ray J knows Izzy, they are real cool. Izzy is like my Cousin and the two of them are cool so we got linked up through him.

Dubcnn: Do you have a mix-tape released?

The single is my first project but in the process of me doing a single I have a mix-tape that is dropping next month; Illinois Town Volume 1.

Dubcnn: Does the mix-tape feature anyone?

Yeah. A couple of my homies & producers. Shorty Mack (Ray J’s artist & best friend) is also on the mix-tape.

Dubcnn: Are you at a point to where you want to be signed?

It depends – the label has to be talking right with the right figures because you know we are regional independently. If a label is talking right, we are down to get with a label. But right now, independent is where its at and that’s where I’m going to stay at.

Dubcnn: Who are you seeking to make music with, major artist wise?

Anybody who wants to make music with me

Dubcnn: How can your fans get in touch with you?

My single is on iTtunes, just type in mr Midwest. My mixtape, its not out yet but it will be soon available on all of the little mixtape sites.

Official music group we’re in here, we’re getting money. Mr. Midwest! We’re doing it!
