NASIM (July
2010) | Interview By:
Chad Kiser
One of the “California Girls” that Katy Perry must have been singing
about, named Nasim, is a visually stimulating artist who is currently on the
verge of releasing her “visually stimulating” video to her debut single
“Bubblegum.”
She sits down with Dubcnn to discuss everything in her creative galaxy from
her time spent with Dr. Dre to being a A.T.L.I.E.N from her own unique
cultural planet.
Right now, Nasim is wrapping up her debut album in Los Angeles with producer
Genus Vegas (who is also her brother) at Studio X.

Dubcnn: Talk to Dubcnn about your debut single. What is "Bubblegum" about as
far as concept & ideas?
Bubblegum is a song about heartbreak. It is about how someone takes
your love, chews it up, and spits it out like bubblegum. I am sure many
people can relate to that and it was my first song about heartbreak that I
ever wrote and it ended up being the single because so many people
personally related to it. In reality, the song was actually inspired by a
close girlfriend of mine who always talks about her boyfriend and their
constant drama.
Dubcnn: Tell us about the video that you are shooting for the
single.
The video is going to be really different and outside the box. I did not
want the video to be typical and I wanted it to be something you don't
expect for the song, but it will still make sense in a way. It’s going to be
somewhat sci-fi, mixed with other cultural influences like East Indian,
Middle Eastern and Egyptian. It has a conceptually deep story to it and at
the end; I rip my lover’s heart right out of his chest. I know it sounds
crazy (laughs) but it will totally make sense and be very visually
stimulating.
Dubcnn: Tell us about your upcoming full-length album, what can
listeners expect from your debut?
The album is called A.L.I.E.N., which is an acronym for Alive Living In
Earth's Nonsense. The sound of the album is more electro/pop/hip-hop. I do
have my mother on it singing in Hindi (language of India) over a tribal like
beat and my sister singing in Farsi (language of Iran). This album has much
more of a international feel and I think the sound is more universal and
refreshing. I'm still working on the album, so I'm still experimenting and
trying come up with songs that have a different sound.
Dubcnn: Your story about Dr. Dre has already been reported, but what
is something from your experiences with Dre that people don't know?
Well, one thing that stood out about Dr. Dre is that he told me he doesn't
like to listen to his own music. He said he loves the process of making
music and when it's done, he doesn't like to listen to it like we all do. He
also doesn't like when he is in a club and they play all his music, old and
new because he is in the club. He did say that he can listen to his artists
like Eminem and 50 Cent, but I guess when it's his, he doesn't get into it.
I do remember that at the club, Dr. Dre was grooving and dancing to music,
but when the DJ started to play NWA's stuff, Dre's mood just switched and he
just sat still. I then asked him if he didn't like what the DJ was playing
and he said he didn't. I thought it was interesting because you would think
Dre would love listening to his own music and bump it all of the time.
Dubcnn: How did you get the invitation to come to Dre's studio while
he is working on Detox?
Through a girlfriend of mine who DJ's around the Los Angeles area.
Dubcnn: What's a day in Californian life of Nasim like?
Well it varies on what I have to do for the day. I am mostly in the studio
with my brother, Genus Vega, who is also my main producer who runs a studio
out of the Los Angeles called Studio X. Other than that; I work out, perform
at a show or practice for an upcoming performance. I spend time coming up
with outfits for shows, events, photo shoots or music videos. Lately, I’ve
been doing interviews like I am doing right now (laughs). I'm constantly
doing or planning things that have to do with my career and just trying to
work towards my goals and turning my dreams into reality.
Dubcnn: How would you describe the sound, style and swag of Nasim?
Dope, fresh, sexy, exotic, smooth, unique. Sugar and spice and everything
nice (laughs).
Dubcnn: Going back to the beginning, how did you get started in
music?
I started to write music when I was like in 9th grade. I wanted to be a
singer, but then I started to get into rapping. I was influenced with a lot
of old school hip-hop, Middle Eastern, and East Indian music. At first, I
wanted to be an emcee and was more into backpack hip-hop. I eventually
started to experiment with styles of music and I figured out what worked for
me and my voice. I eventually ended up being more of a Electro artist that
also experiments with exotic cultural sounds.
Dubcnn: What is the difference between you from all the other female
artists out there?
Well I think of course my sound and also my race makes me unique and
separates me from other female artists. In reality, I don't even think about
competition, nor worry about other female artists. I just do what I think is
dope and let the Universe do the rest.
Dubcnn: In your opinion, who is the greatest female rapper of all
time?
I don't have one female rapper that I think is the greatest of all time. I
mean of “all time” is pretty huge statement. There are a lot of female
artists I like and I feel like they each had an element that I loved and
that inspired me. I mean all of these rappers made the blueprint for the
next. They were all great.
Dubcnn: Closing thoughts for the Dubcnn community?
Keep a watch out for my single Bubblegum. People can go to my website for
updates at www.NasimGalaxy.com or hit me up on MySpace at
www.myspace.com/Nasim and add me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/queennasim. I
would also like to Thank Dubcnn for taking the time to interview me and
feature me on their website. I love this website. Oh yea, I’m also working
on a book but we will talk about that next time (laughs).
