Dubcnn Exclusive – OG Pops
By: Eric Webb

Dubcnn: We're here with OG Pops. What's good, man?

OG Pops: Chillin' man. What's up?

Dubcnn: Alright, so how did you get your start in the industry?

OG Pops: Actually, I got my start with my little brother Chocolate. He was always singing, playing music. He was just always musically inclined. We moved to Oklahoma and we got some music equipment. We started making music and it all started from there. We just started making it happen.

Dubcnn: So who were your musical influences?

OG Pops: Oh man. Marvin Gaye, my mom; especially my mom. My mom singin' every day all day.

Dubcnn: Dubcnn: So is that who Chocolate got his musical influence from? How did that happen?

OG Pops: Chocolate is a special kid. We were youngsters and we used to go to a boy's club; they used to have a music room in there. They had drums, pianos, guitars, flutes, horns, and all this kind of stuff in there. Choc would go to each one of those little things and just start playing them and I swear we didn't have none of that at home. I don't know how he did it! There was just something about Choc He was just blessed with music, know what I mean? Real stuff.

Dubcnn: What was your first gig that got you inside the music industry?

OG Pops: Wow, that's kinda funny! Haha, I was promotin' this guy that couldn't really sing that well but the girls liked him so I booked a place at the Holiday Inn and we sold 300 tickets for $9 bucks! That was my first anything to do with music and I found out I could make some money.

Dubcnn: So what was your first big money maker?

OG Pops: Wow. My first big money maker had nothing to do with music. I was a professional boxer.

Dubcnn: So you boxed for a living at one point?

OG Pops: Yeah.

Dubcnn: What was your favorite thing about boxing?

OG Pops: Just the love of the sport, know what I mean? Just one-on-one. I guess just proving your point. Duking it out and seeing who was the strongest.

Dubcnn: So you got this new company, On Da Run Entertainment. How did you guys start that?

OG Pops: Oh man, it's crazy. My dude, Tip-C. We were sitting in the room one day. I was at his house. I had Leo come through and had a female named Jewel come through and they were like "Wanna do this music thing?" and I wasn't into it. I had my son's back and my brother's back so when they came to me, I said I wasn't gonna do it cause I might not make it so I just let it go. A couple months went by and Jewel came through with her mom and said "Look, I really wanna do this." I was like "I don't know" but then Leo came through with another CD and it was like BAM, BAM.

So I was like "Okay" cause they both had talent. I went through a transition where I stayed at (Tip-C's) house for a couple days and I just said "You know, I'm just gonna go ahead and do my own company." and that's what we're doin' right now. I'm not braggin' or anything, but we're hot! We've been makin' a lot of noise in the industry and I'm just proud of everybody that's workin' with me. It's crazy.

Dubcnn: What are you guys working on right now?

OG Pops: Right now, we got two compilations. We got one that I put out and we got another one with a company called Red Rose Entertainment which is my dude Groove. He did a lot of writin' and a lot of producin' for a lot of people. He's got my back 100%. When I say Groove, everybody knows who I'm talkin' about. We're just makin' it happen, man!

Dubcnn: Who are all on the label?

OG Pops:Man. My roster's kinda deep already. I got Leo Wilde, producer, arranger, singer, rapper. I got Tip-C, rapper, my right hand man and President of the company. I got Pistol P, rapper. Then I got Moneybagz from North Carolina. Ya'll gonna hear about him real soon. I got a females named Indica and Jewel. I got this guy way out in Philly. He's doin' some things right now. Roster's kinda deep, I got music out there. I'm just trying to make it happen.

Dubcnn: For those who don't know, whose dad are you?

OG Pops: Just look at me and tell me whose dad I am.

Dubcnn: How does it feel to have raised one of the most critically acclaimed rappers in the West in the past 10 years?

OG Pops: Let me tell you something. That kid is a blessing. He's a good dude at heart, he's a good father, great son, great grandson, great nephew, great brother. Dude is real. One thing I trip off of is when I listen to his music, I'm like "Damn I wish he wasn't my son!" so people wouldn't think I was on his dick so much. I listen to his music and I'm just like "Where the hell did he come from?" cause he's been around me all my life.

Dubcnn: Dubcnn: What's the craziest story you have about the industry?

OG Pops: One time I was on tour with HWA (Hoez Wit Attitude) and Player P brought some real hoes to the room and said "Hey, man! I got some real hoes!" That's the craziest thing I've ever seen because one of them said "We ain't hoes, it's just what we do!"

Dubcnn: What genre best describes your label?

Leo: Experimental. There's too many differences between each artist to specify a certain genre.

OG Pops: Yeah we cover everything. If you wanna go to Africa, we got somethin' for you to play in Africa, I guarantee it. I'm not playin'! We had a real famous producer, owner, tell me that I had somethin' a lot of people never had and that's a lot of talent. He looked at the pictures of all the artists[sic] and told me if they don't sound good, they look good, but everything sounds good.

Dubcnn: What's your first single for the compilation album?

OG Pops: Right now, the first single is Pain & Misery, Tip-C's single. Actually, we're doing four singles at one time, Leo's single Coma, P's single, Moneybagz's single, we just finished the video, Runnin' Through The Rain. We got a gang of shit goin' on. We got two females releasin': Indica and Jewel.

Dubcnn: That does it for the interview. I appreciate you doing the interview with us, man. It was a pleasure!

OG Pops: Well I appreciate doin' it. It ain't every day you get the opportunity to speak out what you wanna say. Really some cool people. I wanna give shout-outs to all my folks: Moneybagz from North Carolina, my boy Pistol P, one of the tightest lyricists you're gonna hear about in a minute. My heart and soul right here, Tip-C, my business partner. Leo, one of the most creative guys you will ever meet and he can eat too! (laughs)

He's not coming to the camera but Groove, my guidance counselor, I just wanna tell him thank you for comin' out here and spendin' all this time with me, man. Been out here for three weeks. Helped me put this company together. Everything is nice. It is what it is. On Da Run Entertainment. You've seen us, now you gotta feel us. It's all good. Peace.
