Dubcnn: What’s good with the new album?
I got some good music on there for people who remember the old school
Paperboy… I’m ready to do something new and deep down I’m excited and
ready for what comes my way. I’m really just starting to get active
again and move… br>
Dubcnn: Any new videos on the horizon?
Right now, we are focusing on the single called, “Fire Drill” and
getting that going. When I get up to a certain amount of spins, we will
then shoot the video. The song is spreading right now and we started it
right here from the West. The ball is rolling…
Dubcnn: Do you think lighting will strike twice and you can have that
mega-success again like you had with Ditty?
The game has changed dramatically from when I was out before and now I’m
just trying to stay current. I was so young when I dropped that Ditty -
so that was part of the appeal. I was like 19 then, but I’m still with
the times and I’m definitely active and moving. They got me in the
old-school bracket, but that song was old school… not me.
Dubcnn: It is a classic song though...
Yeah it’s cool they made it a classic. It’s an honor man for real.
Dubcnn: Quick history, how did Ditty blow up like that? What’s the secret
behind the success?
That shit felt like it was overnight. The song has a real good feel and
people liked to party to it. Honestly, it was a blessing – that’s what
it was – a blessing. It was cool to see that part of the game, cause a
lot of these new cats, they don’t know what that feels like to drop a CD
and have the whole world actually buying it – and not burning it and
downloading it… That was the good days right there.
Dubcnn: When you have song as big as Ditty, do you still see royalties from
that every year?
Yeah, I still get quarter royalties just like everybody else. Checks still
come in, that’s why I said earlier that it is such a blessing… it’s
crazy too because I didn’t receive any publishing for the music I wrote.
I got screwed for that publishing. I can’t imagine what I would be
getting if I had my publishing...
Dubcnn: So who got the publishing?
John Ferguson [Executive Producer] and the label Next Plateau have it.
But I’m not mad at it for real. I say it time and time again – that song
was a blessing.
Dubcnn: What about Rhythm D [Producer] do you still work with him?
Rhythm D isn’t on this album - - we are still cool, but I got some other
cats to do the Ditty on this one. *laughs* That was Rhythm D’s first big
record too [The Nine Yards] and it’s crazy because I remember sitting in
the studio telling him, ‘you know nobody has ever done the do da ditty
before.’ Just that beat within itself was the bomb. He flipped it for me
and I wrote the lyrics to it that night and the Ditty was a go! It was
just like that.
Dubcnn: So that one night changed your whole life…
Yeah I guess so huh, *laughs* I never looked at it like that – but yeah
*laughing*. That one night changed my life.
Dubcnn: So as far as the new album [The New News] – what’s the concept and
feel?
This is my forth album and this one has 15 tracks on it. We went in and
banged this album out. I did the whole album in like 2 or 3 days. It’s
all about the New News of Paperboy.
Dubcnn: Really? You did the entire album that quick?
Yeah we went to Paramount for like two and a half days and they had me
on another mission. We was on one man. The first album I did was pretty
quick too because that was for the money. They [Next Plateau] called
right after I recorded the songs Ditty and The Nine Yards and they said,
‘finish the album and we will send you another 20 Grand.’ So I got my 20
Grand real quick and I wrote that album and within that week, the album
was done. We was trying to get it – and I got my money that week
*laughs*. It’s all business – business or nothing…
Dubcnn: What about album features or collaborations?
I got songs with Slim Thug, Krayzie Bone, E40 and Terry Troutman. It’s
some real West Coast shit! I was just listening to the song I did with
Krayzie Bone and it is bananas!!! I met Krayzie in Hollywood and we
hooked up and drank a little and knocked it out. I flew to Ohio to do
the joint with Terry Troutman. This album has been another blessing for
me and I always try to do right in God’s eyes.
Dubcnn: So what is Krayzie like in the studio?
Krayzie is still crazy in the studio!!! He’s laid back and quiet, but
when he gets on that mic, he is straight shooting fire. And that song we
got together is crazy! Everybody needs to check out that one. That song
is money – and Money is the name of it *laughs*.
Also, people love that song I did with Slim Thug. The feedback has been
great and even my sister who is a Jehovah’s Witness likes that song. I
really hope the people like it when they hear it. Oh yea, make sure you
check out the song called, “Text Me” – that joint it crazy too!
