Independent music hustler and Wu Tang affiliate Shabazz the Disciple took time out of his busy West Coast trip to sit down with us and talk the independent music game, how he's gained a younger following and what he believes to be the resurgence of horrorcore rap in the 2011 and 2012. He also gives us his opinion on the "Cage VS Cons" event which recently took place in Los Angeles and which he performed at. In the event several law enforcement officials are pitted against ex convicts in an officially sanctioned cage fighting M.M.A. match. The event also featured performances for artists such as Shabazz, E-40, Too Short, Killah Priest and many more.

Dubcnn Exclusive – Shabazz
By: Jose Ho-Guanipa

Dubcnn: Dubcnn.com, we're here with Shabazz. What's good man?

Shabazz: What's good with you man?

Dubcnn: We're just here getting ready for this Cage VS. Cons thing, on Saturday. Gonna be big. Like you guys said, you've been running around, no sleep.

Shabazz: Shit we ain't sleep last night. Running around, promoting Cage VS. Cons, May 21st. the real rapture. We was at Playboy today, we was at Danny's old school. Met his nice teacher and everything, nice students. We just left them a gem of inspiration for what they getting' ready to venture into. 'Cause we basically all took that same path already, so we gave them words of wisdom, what to expect. Basically just grindin' it out. It's all about Cage VS. Cons. And after the show we gonna party. Everybody went hard, I mean hard promoting. I came out here a week early and just been running around with Danny just doing what I said I was gonna do. I got my word and my balls, that's all I got. Basically just try to make sure this is the biggest success that it could possibly be, just do our part.

Dubcnn: What you got going on musically, I know the last one was 2010, right?

Shabazz: Nah, I just put one out, "The Hood Scriptures". It came out in February, independent. I stay off the radar, I don't really like dealing with major labels no more, that's dead. You got the internet, you could do it yourself, just throw a little Paypal up there. Just got the news from Danny that the cage vs cons video just went up today. I'm definitely gonna blast that out. We gotta send that to Jay. We gonna start blasting, I'mma do my little blast. It's a dope video, it's the anthem. Everybody did a theme song for the soundtrack and this is me and Danny's. It's kind of got that Roman coliseum, from then to now theme.

Dubcnn: What's the concept of the video?

Shabazz: Cage VS. Con., what the event is going to be about... We basically did our research, he printed out some literature, so we could learn the terminology of the M.M.A.'s, what types of moves they do and we basically incorporated it into our lines. Basically, bigged up the whole concept of the M.M.A., but did it up in hip-hop form, beat you up with lyrics. I mean musically I got plenty of albums, we stacked up over here. I'm just basically ready to bang out with Mensrea, 2012. I've been waiting for that. I ain't been really tryna holla at nobody for nothing else. I been waiting for that. Got the Gravediggaz new album, with RZA, myself Killah Priest and Fukwon. Three more songs and that's done. I got my solo album with Z at the end. Stay plenty albumed up. Got a Thug Angel second album completed with me and Hell Razah. I'm working with my partner from Orlando, Murdock, we a new group, Bow and Arrow, we got a new single it's called "Look Up. We working on our album, we just beat selecting, beat party right now. We got the Butcher Shop/The Morgue Man. That's me, Killah Priest, Sic Fuc, and Danny. He chop 'em and we mop 'em. When the morgue truck comes, we just mop up the remains of whatever the butcher shop left, and niggas don't be leavin' no leftovers. Makes our job easier, then we can get some sleep. It's gonna be dope, we just gonna basically bring back that underground hard shit, that punch you in your face, just blow your fuckin' brains out your head and make you think again. Instead of trying to make you do the Dougie, the fuckin' Stanky Leg, and all this dumb shit - tripping over mic cords on the fuckin' stage, playing double dutch when you got cord mics. Don't even know how to rhyme and do a show bumpin' into turntable fuckin' up the show. We ain't getting down like that. We bringing that real hip-hop, that energy, we sweat, you see the veins comin' out of our neck – we put in work because we love what we do. We got a passion for this and the fans love us and we give that love right back. An that's basically what you're gonna see Saturday. They say it's the end of the world this Saturday, the rapture and all this bullshit. The real rapture is this Saturday at the L.A. Sports Arena.

Dubcnn: You got a lot of projects going on, how often are you dropping? How do you space it out so you're not committed to other stuff that interferes?

Shabazz: I just work. If everybody gotta go on tour then everybody come, fuck it let's all go on tour and fuck that whole thing up. If the promoters is not with it, cool. I gotta go get that bread. I gotta feed these kids and do my fatherly duties. It all balances out because we all good, we all tight. The schedules are all good, we just workin'. We don't sleep, Killah Priest takin' a nap, but he drove, I didn't drive.

Dubcnn: You talkin' about underground, shit…

Shabazz: We got that commercial shit too, underground commercial. You ain't gonna see me with a shiny suit doing the webbo or some shit. You gonna see some gangsta shit in horror form. You gonna get that hard street jail shit and that Red Hook project shit and that horror.

Dubcnn: What do you guys try to do to get young kids to get into your shit?

Shabazz: Well, I wanna shout out all the parents that are fans of our and grew up with us from 94 and are teaching their young kids about hip-hop. 'Cause I get emails from 14 - 15 year old kids from all over the world. "Bear Witness". You wasn't even born when that came out, how you know about that? "Ah, my father he plays that shit around the house all my life. Gravediggaz posters, Shabazz posters, he got every Wu Tang album. I'm into what he's into 'cause that's all I know". So shout out to all the parents out there that teach they children about real hip-hop, about us. Agallah, Killah Priest, Shabazz, Gravediggaz. Not early Lil' Wayne and Jay-Z. 'cause there's a balance to that 'cause everybody's fed up about all this bullshit that's going on. It's not like we don't exist, we exist. We ain't goin' nowhere. So what you do is use youtube and facebook as a tool to market this shit. It's all about advertisement, like Danny says. If they don't know about it, how are they gonna go buy it or support it. You gotta make sure they know. And that's why your promotion game gotta get serious. And it's basically about word of mouth. That's how hip-hop really started in the mid 70's in Red Hook. It'd be like, "You know they playin' music tonight," then everybody would come out and it would be crowded. No flyers, no YouTube, no Myspace, just world of mouth, and that's a good tool too. Grassroots.

Dubcnn: Exactly, like Cage VS. Cons.

Shabazz: This is a monumental historical concept that only a Sic Fuc could pull off. And it's going to be banging because everywhere we go to hand out flyers and tickets, "Oh I already know about that, I already got my tickets, I heard about that." So it'd be dope to know that everybody in LA tha we bump into know alrady. That's a good promotional job. I wanna shout out everybody on the list, M.C.'s, M.M.A. fighters; I wanna say good luck to y'all. Deebo, Machete, and Freeway Rick Ross. And all the organizers, Danny, Sic Fuc, Michael, Michael Lynch and everybody who just put this together and believe in all of us that we gonna bring something special to complete their vision.

Dubcnn: So on that note, Saturday May 21st, LA Sports Arena, Cage VS. Cons.

Shabazz: 11:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. You got from 11:00 A.M. -7:00 P.M., the music and from 7:30 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. is the M.M.A. matches. It's like what if you was taken away from your family for ten years and you was sittin' in a jail cell. And you finally got the chance to fight your arresting officer. Wouldn't you beat the shit out of him, wouldn't you fuck a cop up for once. So I'm goin' for the con on that note. It is what it is, Cage VS. Con., May 21st, bikini contest, they gonna be givin' out tattoos all of that, it's gonna be dope. Dope music, bloody fights and beautiful women, good music and drinks. Can't ask for nothing else.

Dubcnn: Shout out your stuff, your site, YouTube, all that.

Shabazz: Yeah you gotta go to YouTube, punch in Shabazz the Disciple. New videos, new clips, you know at least every month I hit you with new videos. I'mma keep banging' yall til 2010 until you get the message. We ain't playin'. Then you gotta go to facebook, David Collins, then you can go to Twitter @shabazzdisciple and you could go to redhookhouses.com. Wings up Red Hook Projects I got y'all.
