interview SICCNESS (April 2011) | Interview By: Chad Kiser

LRT/Universal recording artist Siccness was raised in Orange County, California in the cities of Santa Ana & Tustin, and at a young age fought his way through adversities that shape the man that he has become today. He lost his father to a homicide when he was only 9 years old and soon had to take over the role as man of the house. Family, especially his daughter, is what drives Siccness to achieve success.

In 2006 Siccness started to make a name for himself with the release of his first street album titled “Here I Come”. And In 2008, he built an even bigger buzz with his second street album which was titled “The Orange County Zoo”. In 2010 the emcee established his own company in Siccness Music, launched his website, released the “I Am Siccness” EP, and his Siccness Store which includes his own branded merchandise.

Currently, the Orange County native is back in the studio and just released his second EP which is titled “Bottom Line”, and with his newly signed deal with LRT/Universal Records, the sky is the limit for Siccness!

Dubcnn recently sat down with the west coast rhymer to talk about his budding career, getting it in with Shady Records’ Cashis on the song “Rollin’ Down A Backstreet”, the release of his new EP “Bottom Line”, the other upcoming projects he’s involved in, and a slew of other topics.

Dubcnn: Dubcnn is here with Orange County’s Siccness! Tell the readers a bit about yourself as a person, as well as an artist.

Well as a person I’m a full-time Father/Hustler/Musician and my little princess means the world to me and she is the reason why I do what I do. And as far as an artist I make good quality music, my grind is relentless, I strive to be one of the best in the industry and I represent the West Coast.

Dubcnn: You’ve been on your grind for a minute, for those of us not familiar with you, fill us in on your discography and who’ve you’re worked with over the course of your budding career.

As far as my discography goes I have put out 2 Street Albums “Here I Come” which I released in December of 2006, “Orange County Zoo” in September of 2008, and then I have released 2 EP’s “I Am Siccness” in 2010 and I just recently released “Bottom Line” on March 29, 2011. And as far as who I have worked with to date I have worked with artist such as Cashis, Epademik, Clinton Wayne, Mash, & J.King just to name a few.

Dubcnn: You recently dropped the song, “Rollin’ Down A Backstreet”, which features Ca$his of Shady Records. How did that particular song come about?

Well we both rep OC so we eventually ended up coming in contact with each other & after a phone conversation between me and Cashis we decided it would be a good look for OC if we collaborated on a track, so from there on out Cashis had me on his radio show that he was doing in OC at the time I believe it was called “Bogish Boy Radio” and then shortly after I received a pro tools session from Cashis with his verse he had did for me, and I had it stored for when I had the perfect beat for it and that happened when I linked up with former Hoopla/Universal recording artist Epademik and I played him the verse and then from there I dropped my 16’s and Epademik worked his magic with the track and then mixed, & mastered it. And it was a rap.

Dubcnn: You also have the new video, “Dear Hip-Hop”. Tell us about the concept to that song and video.

The concept of the song is me writing Hip-Hop a love letter but in the form of a song, The song is similar to a relationship breakup and the relationship being between me and Hip-Hop, And in the letter I express how Hip-Hop has went astray and how I want it back, and In the video im sporting the old school black Adidas outfit, I also got a single break dancer in the video just doing moves in the background while im spitting and its shot in some grimy alley’s in downtown Santa Ana, it all just gave it that old school Hip-Hop feel that I was looking for, the video ended up coming together real well.

Dubcnn: Tell me about the “Bottom Line” EP you’re dropping. Who is featured on it and who handled the production?

Well as far as this (EP) goes it’s some of my best work yet, from beginning to end this (EP) bangs i'm talking real good quality music; the lyrics are on point, the production is on point, the visuals are on point, everything’s on point with it. The album’s mixed & mastered and executive produced by Epademik. I guarantee the fans won’t be disappointed. And as far as production and features go, “Bottom Line” has production from Epademik, Miklo Sanchez, & Serf Show Productions and Features the homie Akoma on the track “Hot Sauce”. Once the Siccness fans as well as people who haven’t heard my music yet hear this album they will love it.

Dubcnn: With an incredible amount of talent coming from Orange County, how do you feel your music sets you apart from others trying to get put on?

Because 90% of them are rappers and I am an artist. Don’t get me wrong we got some really talented artists in OC and a lot of rappers in OC as well. And the difference between the two is a Rapper just raps and puts out music, does some shows here and there but everything that they do is half assed, and an Artist they got the whole package and don’t do shit half assed, meaning there production/lyrics are on point, that there music is mixed and mastered properly and that they stay persistent/relentless in getting there music out there and they standout and are willing to invest in there music, and unfortunately the majority of OC rappers don’t do that and fortunately for me I am an artist so I do do that, so that’s why I feel that my music sets me apart from others.

Dubcnn: Break down a 5-year plan for you and Siccness music. What are some of the accomplishments you’d like to see from yourself?

Well over the next 5 years my plan is to keep putting out quality music that the fans love and to not let up at all, and keep pushing the limit by any means. And as far as some accomplishments go 1st I would like for me and my family to be set financially, 2nd I would like to have Street Teams all throughout the world, and 3rd I would like for Siccness & Siccness Music to be well established in the Hip-Hop industry for years and years to come.

Dubcnn: What three words would you use to characterize your music?

Raw, Street, & Quality.

Dubcnn: If one of our readers wanted to check out your music and get acquainted with your music, what 5 songs from your catalog would you suggest people check out to get a good feel for who Siccness is and represents?

I would tell them to check out one of these 5 tracks: “Shittin On Em”, “Hot Sauce”, “I Am”, “Hustle Harder”, & “Bottom Line”.

Dubcnn: What other projects are you involved in, and who else can we expect you to collaborate with in the near future?

As far as projects that I am involved in right now I contributed a little something to Epademik’s upcoming project “Beast Within” so make sure you look for that, that will be dropping soon. I am also finishing up my full length LP at the moment. And as far as collaborations go, well I was suppose to have a collaboration with Nipsey Hussle, but he just took my money and ran, and as far as any other collaborations go I got something in the works with my big homie from Compton, OG Cuicide & also got something in the works with Att Will from “Wanted Gang” so stay tuned for what’s to come.

Dubcnn: Who did you grow up listening to that has provided the influence in your style and music?

As far as I can remember I always heard Hip-Hop being played in my household as well as old school, R&B, Oldies, Pop, just music in general, But Hip-Hop always stood out to me especially when I turned 8 and I started to understand the music more, and my pops would always be playing Too $hort non stop, and I can remember just thinking that the songs were really cool cause hearing what he was saying and at my age was new to me so it caught my attention. And then from there I went on to listen to a lot of 2pac, Scarface, Snoop, Warren G, and of course more Too $hort and as I got older I started listening to other artist such as Brotha Lynch, Big L, Eminem, Ras Kass, Big Pun, Bone Thugs and so on.

Dubcnn: Is there anyone out west on their come up like you who you are a fan of?

Epademik, Hopsin, OG Cuicide, Clinton Wayne, J King, Kadillak Kaz, OMG, & Rome.

Dubcnn: Tell the people where they can find more information about you or get in contact with you.

To get in contact with me or to find out more information about me you can go to my official website where you can find all my latest news, music, videos and upcoming shows. Or you can also get in contact with me threw my social networks such as my Facebook or on my Twitter

Dubcnn: Any last words for our readers out there?

I hope you all enjoy the music that I make, and to everyone who supports me you are all greatly appreciated, without you I would be nothing. & Dubcnn Appreciate The Love…
