Dubcnn Exclusive – Tommy Gunn
By Jose Ho-Guanipa .............................................................................................
Dubcnn: Beginning your music career, how did you get started?
I got started back in high school it was 10th grade, me and some of my friends just started playin' around on my computer and used to just record and freestyle all day. I lived right across the street from my high school so we were always just ditching class at the house recording and putting together mixtapes for the homies and girls to hear at school.
Dubcnn: Who is Pro City? How have they helped you develop as an artist?
Pro City is the name of our click and now is our own business and entertainment company. There's me Tommy Gunn (solo artist), my boy JM (he's also a solo artist) and my bros Pro City the group who are Blocrunna, Street Kassh and G Moneybagz. I'd say growin' up with them, doing so many songs and always recording and stayin' consistent with each other I have developed into a way more versatile artist. We are all so different and have our own styles so when we collaborate on a record I'd say we always brings the best out of each other.
Dubcnn: Name some of your influences in style and content.
My influences in my life as far as artists would have to be 2Pac, Biggie, Mase, Fab, Nas, Jay-Z, Cam'ron and kurupt to name a few. I have my own style, though. I can adjust to pretty much anything on a record as long as I'm feelin' the beat and topic. I'm very well rounded and will always bring something different to a song.
Dubcnn: Who are some older more experienced artist artists that have shown
support, (like Omar)? How have they helped you out?
My boy Omar Cruz, Big Rich, YB the Rockstar and Mistah Fab- those are some of the more experienced artists that I've worked with and who have shown me support in this game so far. my boy Omar Cruz will always try and help me out in any way he can. I met him at a bar a little
over a year ago and I let him hear some of my music. He was fuckin' with my whole style and content right on the spot so he has definitely introduced me to a lot of important people in this game and I'm grateful for it all. My boy Big Rich, Mistah Fab and Ya Boy have blessed me with verses for records and I'm also grateful for them showing love to a local LA artist such as myself, being that they're from the Bay Area. I think we really need more of that kind of unity.
Dubcnn: Who have you worked with on your projects behind the boards and in
front of the mic?
I've worked with a lot of talent in my career: Marc Brand, Kajmir Royale, Killa Rob, Chris Rockstar, Jay Nari, The Antidote; and in front of the mic: Pro City, Dynamic Certified, Omar Cruz, Big Rich, YB the Rockstar, Rosevelt; so many artists and producers and the list will never stop growing.
Dubcnn: Tell us about your discography and your latest offering the Gunn Show. What were your previous projects? Upcoming?
I just recently dropped my first official Mixtape that was featured here on Dubcnn. The Gunn Show hosted by DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar. It's passed 10,000 downloads and has definitely gotten my buzz bigger on both the net and the streets of LA so all I can be is grateful and continue to give the people good music. I just dropped my new single "Get It" produced by Kajmir Royale featuring Omar Cruz. I also have a big record dropping soon with YB the Rockstar and I'm working on my still untitled debut album, which I've been working on for 3 years now.
Dubcnn: Have you drpped any videos lately? What was the process of creating them like?
I've done some videos from my latest mixtape. I just shot "My SBs" (the Nike song). I went up to the Bay Area to do the "We Out Here" video with Big Rich, "City Life" with my Pro City bros and we shut down the Staples Center. Pro City is the gang, DeNiro with GED artist Gata. I just
wanna continue makin' good videos with concept because anyone can pick up a camera and shoot a video. If you want to make a statement and get people's attention, you need to have a treatment with a good concept and produce something of quality, because it's out there forever and it's a reflection on who you are as an artist. I also have the "Almost Famous" video coming out any day now. I did with Rosevelt and CA Laura and its definitely crazy. We also plan on doing a video for my new single with Omar Cruz "Get It".
Dubcnn: Where do you want to take your career as an artist?
As an artist I just want my music to touch people all around the world, let them know this is what I do best and give them the best on every record I put out. I want to just feed my family and kids through this music and I know I can do it and succeed in this music business, just because of the people I'm surrounded with everyday. I'm around positive energy and am always going to stay away from the negative, even though there's always going to be negativity. I'm just going to keep my head up and provide for my family one way or another.
