Dubcnn Exclusive – Trina
By: Todd Davis
..........................................................................................
Dubcnn: Let's jump right into this brand new album -- You titled the record Amazin', what
does the name of your forthcoming fifth solo CD represent both to and for you?
The title just shows me how much I've worked over the past years, and how much I have
accomplished. I am releasing my fifth album, and that's Amazin' to me because not too
many artists can say that in the music industry today.
Dubcnn: Very true! So, on the set's lead single, "Million Dollar Girl," you teamed
up with both Keri Hilson & Diddy -- How did this stellar collaboration even come to
fruition?
Wow, sometimes I still can't believe it! I actually did the record with Keri Hilson
in mind because I love her voice and I think she is a wonderful artist. When I heard
that Diddy wanted to do the record with me, I was really excited. I couldn't believe
it! I just kept saying, "Wow!" He is absolutely one of my favorite artists to work
with. He is a brilliant man. Diddy brought so much energy and positivity on the video
set that I was blown away!
Dubcnn: Who all did you enlist in regards to the new project's production? And,
how much creative control/input do you actually have when it comes to a Trina track?
I had a lot of creative control this time, which is really great because as
an artist you want to show your growth in your music at all times. With this
album, I was able to try different sounds, as well as step outside of the box a
little, which I really liked. I worked with producers, like; Jim Jonsin, Yonny,
CP Hollywood, as well as Lamb.
Dubcnn: Amazin' also hosts cameos/guest appearances from Ludacris, Rick Ross,
Nicki Minaj, Monica, Lyfe Jennings, Trey Songz, and, surprisingly, Lady GaGa!?!
-- Why did you choose these select artists to appear? And, how did you even
manage to make all of these unique collabos happen?
Yes, I have some heavy hitters on this album, which I'm very honored to have.
I just chose to work with different artists for different reasons, depending on
the type of song it is. I've worked with so many artists in my career. I am always
trying to work with a different variety of artists to add flavor to my albums.
Dubcnn: Do you have any personal favorite songs(s) on Amazin'? If so, why
that/those particular one(s)?
Yes, "Dang A Lang," featuring Nicki Minaj and Lady Saw, is one of my favorites
on the album. It is different because it's three women with different personalities
and styles on this record, which I love. Also "Capricorn," which is a personal song
to me because it explains what a Capricorn means to me! Also, I love "I Want It All,"
which features Monica, which is another one of my favorite songs because it expresses
a phase in my life which wasn't so great.
Dubcnn: Conceptually, what was the inspiration behind both "Dang-A-Lang" and
"Let Them Hoes Fight?"
They both are just fun records! Just different. And, I've done so many records
these two were just really girl power songs! I love both artists, so I just
wanted to be creative and naughty at the same time.
Dubcnn: Pretty Money, who is also on the LP, is a group that you actually put
together -- Can you tell me more about them? And, is this part of a label
deal/situation that you are currently working on/out?
Yes, I love the girls! They are so much fun and energy. The young ladies
remind me of myself when I first got started. I'm an artist/CEO now, and I
think that is awesome alone. I'm happy to be able to evolve in this industry,
and put out my own group soon.
Dubcnn: Take it back to the beginning...When did you first become interested
in music? And, how did it all begin for Katrina Laverne Taylor?
I always been a fan of music, from way back to Salt-n-Pepa, MC Lyte,
Queen Latifah. So, when I got the chance to go in the studio, I was thinking,
"Man, this is a dream come true!"
Dubcnn: Growing up in Miami, Florida, who all influenced your sound and style?
Well, we have a lot of dance music in Miami, so I really listened to Luke
and Trick Daddy mostly.
Dubcnn: With that being said, describe for me your overall musical vibe?
My music is strong, sexy, and fun. It is also inspirational to some women
and their everyday lives.
Dubcnn: Initially, what particular string of events led to you hooking up with
Trick Daddy, and eventually inking with Slip-N-Slide Records? And to date, what
has been the key to your success?
Trick asked me to get on his single, "Nann," and we just went from there. The
label loved the collaboration and the response the record got. So, I just went into
the studio and started recording my first album Da Baddest Chick. The key to my
success is hard work and determination -- "Failure is NOT an option!"
Dubcnn: What is currently going on with the fragrance lines; Diamond Princess &
Diamond Doll?
There has been a lot of changes, starting with the names and the company. I
will keep you posted with the new updates! Log on (to): www.thebaddestchick.com,
to find out the latest and newest info!
Dubcnn: Any new/further developments for your Pink Diamond Couture clothing
company? I also hear acting is currently on your radar as well?
I am still working on the clothing, so expect to see some new things later
this year. As far as acting, it's definitely in the works! It is a new phase of
my life that I'm ready to evolve into.
Dubcnn: How do you view the current climate of today's Hip-Hop artists -- Are
you content with it? More specifically, female rappers or the lack thereof?
I mean, it is what it is. I just focus on Trina, and do me. I am not really
concerned about anyone else. I'm enjoying the up and coming women because it has
been awhile since the music industry has had a good female roster.
Dubcnn: With that being said, more recently your name has been linked to beefs
with, particularly, fellow peers/rappers, Jacki-O and Khia -- Do you want to say
anything on this matter?
I don't entertain beef, it's wack and a waste of energy and time! Jacki-O and I are
cool. I respect her, and vice versa. I think it is just the people around female
emcees that sometimes tend to create all the unnecessary drama.
Dubcnn: As of late, your personal life seems to be foreshadowing the music -- Why
do you think that is? Is it really anyone's business who you are seeing/dating? Can
you speak on this topic?
Who cares about what people think of you as a human being or woman in the industry. Let
them talk, and say whatever they feel, if it makes them happy! I'm very happy and in love,
despite what anyone thinks. So, I just ignore the comments or thoughts of others who are
not about positivity.
Dubcnn: Good idea! Well, everyone either knows your music already, or will become
familiar with it soon, but who exactly is Trina?
A regular girl. I'm down to earth, a perfectionist, and a strong woman on a
mission to continue to be successful.
Dubcnn: And, what do you like to do in your spare time, completely away from this music?
Nothing! Just relax, and spend time with those I love.
Dubcnn: What is your 5 to 10 year plan in entertainment?
To just continue to be successful, to be able to run my company, DP Entertainment,
and to keep building my empire.
Dubcnn: Your anticipated fifth solo album, Amazin', is due out when exactly? Are
there any current plans to tour behind it?
The album Amazin' is due out on May 4th 2010. Yes, I plan to tour this summer. More
details about the touring real soon.
Dubcnn: What's that "live" show element (gonna be) like?
AMAZIN', of course! *She giggles*
Dubcnn: Is there anything else that I may have left out or have forgotten to ask about?
You've covered all the important elements!
Dubcnn: Sadly, Thursday June 25th 2009, the world lost the greatest entertainer who ever
lived -- What was your first reaction upon hearing the tragic news? How does Michael Jackson’s
untimely passing affect, not only you, but, music in general? And, in the wake of his demise,
what does this mean for the future of recorded music?
I was coming back from vacation in St. Lucia, and I saw it on the TV on the plane. I
was very sad while sitting still in tears. MJ was the best entertainer to ever grace us
with music, talent, and uniqueness. His legacy will forever live on. I grew up listening
to his music, and it inspired me to work even harder. He was extremely the best! I love
Michael Jackson! I believe his early passing left every soul in the music industry feeling
empty, and all of his fans very devastated and (at a) loss for words!
Dubcnn: I couldn't have said it better! So, do you have any closing thoughts?
Thank you all so much for your unconditional love and support! I am so grateful. I
love you all so much!
Dubcnn: Thanks for taking your time out with me today, good luck with everything, and
continued success to you
