Slim Thug - October 31, 2004 By : SGV

From the Northside of Houston, Texas comes the 6 feet 6 inch emcee named Slim Thug. If you keep your ear to the streets, you already know who he is. He's been grinding in Houston's underground, killing mixtapes with his crew Boss Hogg Outlawz, as well as Michael 5000 Watts and The Swisha House, for years. You might know him from his work with the legendary E.S.G.. But, most of you, will know him for sure now. His debut CD "Already Platinum" is on the way and will be dropping on The Neptunes' label Star Trak in conjunction with Geffen Records.
Right now, you can catch Thugga in two videos on rotation. One is "Still Tippin'", which features Swisha House emcees Mike Jones and Paul Wall. That's a single from a Swisha House release entitled "The Day Hell Broke Loose 2." The other video is Slim's first single, which features, the legend, Bun B of U.G.K. and one of the hottest emcees in the South right now, Atlanta's T.I. The track's called "3 Kings." Keep your eyes open for those. They're BOTH heaters. The album will have Neptunes production, as well as Jazze Pha. On top of all that, Jay-Z drops a guest verse on "I Ain't Heard Of That." The Neptunes are working with various producers from Houston, keepin' the vibe very Southern.
When Thugga blings on tracks, believe, he's REALLY doing it. If you've seen his spot on "You Heard It First" on MTV, he talks about his owning a 7,000 sq. foot house, a Bentley, a Record store and Real Estate. Step ya bling rap game up! Shit's about to change. I've been following this cat since 1999, it's REAL good to see him get on the map, now.
The album will be out around December, keep an eye for it. If you're disapointed by Snoop's album on Star Trak, don't shy away from this, PLEASE!
Peep the official site.

Preview Snoop Dogg's New Album! [Audio] - October 31, 2004 By : Nima

First of all I have to say that I am really dissapointed in this album... I'm sure none of us were expecting a classic from Snoop Dogg on the Neptunes label, but atleast something decent.
The newest Snoop Dogg LP features Nelly (!), Lil Jon, Justin Timberlake (!!!), Trina, Daz, Soopafly, Pharell and more.
The main subject of the album is love, alot of love songs or about women in general.
However there a few decent tracks on there, check out 3 preview songs from the record below and make up your own mind wether you will be spending your $15 on this record or not.
Snoop Dogg - Promise I
Snoop Dogg - Step Ya Game Up (ft. Daz)
Snoop Dogg - Signs (ft. Justin Timberlake & Charlie Wilson

Del/Haiku D'Etat/Zion I - October 28, 2004 By : SGV
First off, I'd like to apologize for this update taking so long. I've been have a few problems over here, so I haven't had much of a chance to update on the site. But, better late than never.
About 2 weeks ago, I hit up the Cali Comm Tour with Del, Haiku D'Etat, Zion I, Bukue 1 & Tee Double. I went to the show at the Glass House in Pomona. Nice spot for a show, they just need to change that Alcohol policy. Anyway, Bukue 1 & Tee Double were first up. First time I had ever heard of them, but they were tight. Busted some real dope freestyles and did some of their own songs. Since this was my first time seeing them, I'm not sure names of their songs, but I liked what I heard. Tee Double has his "Lone Star LP" out now. If you can find that, scoop it.
Next up was Zion I with Deuce Eclipse. They went through a lot of album cuts and including "Cheeba Cheeba." AmpLive was killin' it on the drum machine. Zion and Deuce had a grip of energy, they had everyone bouncing. Both Zion I and Deuce Eclipse got mixtapes out right now. If you get a chance, peep those out.
A bunch Project Blowed cats came out to open for Haiku. Non-Stop and Reggae artist Jah Orah, among others. They did a nice job of getting the crowd ready. Once Aceyalone, Myka 9 and Abstract Rude hit the stage, the crowd really got into it. They did tracks off the first album, as well as cuts off the new album, namely "Mike, Aaron And Eddie." On top of that, Myka was ripping acapellas like he always does. Their set ended with a huge posse cut. Busdriver and a whole bunch of Blowed cats came on stage and ripped it. Their set was real hot. Pick up Coup D'Theatre.
Del closed the show. He did cuts off of most his albums, including "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" and "Both Sides Of The Brain." He brought out Opio. Op was promoting his new album "Triangulation Station." They did cuts off of some of the Hiero albums. Overall, I was diggin' Del's set. Never seen him live before. He has some good crowd control. If this tour hits your city, peep it. Very much worth your money.
Thanks to Non-Stop, Badru and Ben for the hook up into the show.
Here's some pics:

Lyrical Swords V.1: Hip Hop & Politics in the Mix - October 27, 2004 By : Nima
YinSumi Press, the world's first publishing house dedicated to documenting the political and social aspects of the Hip Hop sub-culture, in conjunction with www.lyricalswords.com , is proud to announce the release of Adisa Banjoko's highly anticipated book "Lyrical Swords Vol. 1: Hip Hop and Politics in the Mix" on November 2nd 2004. "Lyrical Swords" is a collection of essays and interviews on Hip Hop culture and the political, social and spiritual trends within it. Hip Hop culture's political effect has been a highly discussed topic in this Presidential election year. While new to most of America, this arena has been Adisa's stomping ground for over 15 years. Under the pen name "The Bishop of Hip Hop", Adisa Banjoko has entertained and educated many on Hip Hop culture, Eastern philosophy, Martial Arts, Islamic culture, and African American social issues. His new book "Lyrical Swords" however, has garnered much attention in various media circles. Recently, Adisa Banjoko has been seen on KRON with Isabel Duron, Phil Matier and SF Mayor Willie Brown discussing the potential power of the Hip Hop vote. He was also featured on KPIX with Barbara Rogers. Hip Hop Historian Davey D featured Mr. Banjoko as a guest for "Hard Knock Radio" on KPFA radio. He was also a recent guest on Air America's radio show "Unfiltered", hosted by Hip Hop political icon Chuck D of Public Enemy. You can also find his book getting an honorable mention in the new issue of The Ave Magazine. "Lyrical Swords" features intervews and essays with some of Hip Hop's greatest icons including Russell Simmons, Q-Tip, Everlast, Martial Arts Legend Royce Gracie, Paris, Mystic, Dilated Peoples Rakaa, Encore, Shamko Noble, Shaolin Monk Shi Yan Ming, and many others. He is easily one of the most respected, hated and loved people in the Hip Hop community. Mr. Banjoko’s knowledge has earned him countless invitations to lecture at prestigious universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, U.C. Berkeley, U.C. Santa Cruz and San Francisco State, just to name a few. He has shared the stage with political and cultural icons such as S.F. Mayor Willie Brown, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich, Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambataa, rap legend Chuck D, and pioneer b-boy Crazy Legs. "I'm trying to get the young people of the world to arm themselves mentally and politically" stated Mr. Banjoko. On November 2nd after you go to the polls, vote for yourself and get 'Lyrical Swords'. I'm gonna be touring the continental U.S. the next few months. Before the official tour, I'll be holding Bay Area book jams at Future Primitive Sounds in SF with Champion DJ Kid Dragon and my man B-boy Remind. On the Nov. 5th I'll be at Marcus Books in SF w/ MC Shamako Noble and AK Black. On Nov. 6th I'll be at the Rumi Bookstore in Fremont w/ MC Shamako Noble and Inspector Dbl. Negative. I will also have a mixtape dropping with my man Rob Flow from Spin Dynasty. I plan to change the way we all view Hip Hop and politics." "I sold out of all of my pre-order books at Hip Hop events and political events here in the Bay. I sold them from the back of my Ford F-150. I learned how to hustle watching Short Dog, Master P, Andre Nickatina and E-40 do their thing. People will find me all over the streets of the Bay, LA, NY, the ATL and Philly with this wisdom. Wherever people are getting boxed outta the game by these snakes and fakes, I'm gonna be handing out these swords to liberate minds."
People looking for a glimpse of "the swords" can go to www.lyricalswords.com (designed by graf legend Scape Martinez) and get 3 complimentary chapters of the book sent to them via email.

Battlecat Update [News] - October 18, 2004 By : Nima

Battlecat aka B-Sharp aka BC Powder took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to clear up a few things with us. First off the whole B-Sharp thing on the 213 album.
"B-Sharp man, that's me. BC Powder, that's me. Battlecat, that's me. It's just different sides and aspects of me. I love it, when people say "Who's that B-Sharp dude, he sounds like Battlecat". I'm just trying out new things, new sounds, and the 213 album was just the first LP of me as B-Sharp. You gonna see B-Sharp, again, cause I'm sharp man, anybody that knows me knows I'm sharp. I'ma be Battlecat too, it's all me man."
And about the whole 213 Lawsuit thing, which caused alot of controversy, he explained that it's strictly business. "I had to sue 'em! They put out the record without havin' the contract finished! I gotta get my money man, it ain't no personal problems. I did the music, i gotta get paid. Ain't no beef or no nothin' that muthafuckas be tryna tell you. It's business homie!."
And as far as his music goes, he's been putting the finishing touches on his little brother Mykestro's album, aswell as getting ready to work on the new Tony Toni Tone album, and more.

Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz - Crunk Juice - October 15, 2004 By : SGV

Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz new album, Crunk Juice is coming out next month. The first single "What U Gon' Do," which features Lil' Scrappy, is in rotation, right now. The album itself will be featuring the likes of Snoop Dogg, Nas, 8Ball & MJG, Ice Cube, Suga Free, Gangsta Boo, Ludacris, R.Kelly, T.I., Bun B, Pitbull, E-40, Jazze Pha, Lil' Scrappy, Trillville, Usher, Nate Dogg, Pharell of the Neptunes and MANY more. I haven't seen a line up like that, in a LONG time. There'll be A LOT of Crunk on the album, as the title would lead you to believe. But, it does come with a Bonus disc, which will feature Reggae, with Elephant Man & Lady Saw, and Reggaeton, with Pitbull & Daddy Yankee, remixes of "What U Gon' Do." The disc is also going to feature the debut of what Lil' Jon dubs as "Crunk Rock" on two tracks. On paper, this album, seems monstererous. Many dope artists and a whole lot of different styles, all on one CD. Peep it out, November 11th, 2004.
Tracklisting:
Crunk Juice Get Crunk (feat. Bo Hagon) What U Gon' Do (feat. Lil Scrappy) Real Nigga Roll Call (feat. Ice Cube) Bo Hagon's Phone Call Da Blow (feat. Gangsta Boo) Contract (feat. Lateef & The Chief - October 15, 2004 By : SGV

What do you get when you mix 1/2 of Latyrx and 1/2 of Blackalicious? You get Lateef & The Chief. Lateef of Latyrx and Chief Xcel the producer mastermind from Blackalicious, are dropping their collab album Maroons: Ambush within the next few weeks. If you love that melodic-Jazzy sound of Blackalicious this is a definite pick up for you. Though only 9 tracks(there will be a Hidden track though), I can bet, it's well worth your money and time.
Tracks to peep will be "Best of Me" and "Beautiful You," as Lateef is accompanied by Gift of Gab on both tracks. Expect nothing but hot spitting. This is the other side of the Bay area that people don't know too much about. Well, here's your chance.
Tracklisting:
1. Ambush 2. Matter of Time 3. If 4. Don't Stop 5. Lester Hayes 6. Best of Me 7. Best of Me - (Bonus Beat) 8. Beautiful You 9. 365 Discuss This Topic

The legendary trio, Haiku D'Etat, are releasing their new album, Coup De Theatre, which comes with a DVD. If you checked their first album, you'll know what to expect. If you haven't, and have at least checked out Abstract Rude, Aceyalone or Mikah Nyne's music, then you'll know what to expect. If you don't fall under any of those categories, then you're truly sleeping, they're West Coast legends and pioneers. Here's their single "Mike, Aaron, Eddie"
Don't forget, Haiku D'Etat are on tour right now with Del and Zion I. I've posted about the tour before, but Nima just re-posted the dates for their tour, under the Zion I update. If you're in the L.A. area, the tour is here this weekend.
Check Sandboxautomatic.com for a real good deal on this album. You'll get the album with the DVD, the first album, as well as a free poster, sticker & Bonus Instrumentals CD. All for 17 bucks. Not a bad deal. Get it while you can.

Total Experience Records Presents Max Julian! - October 14, 2004 By : Yash

Max Julian who has been in The Regime has put the finnishing touches to his album called "Smoke N Roll".
After listening to the album I gotto say it was one of the best albums to comeout in quite awhile. The production is super tight and Max Julian's lyrics and wordplay is on point. He has very little guest appearances on the album which is a good thing because Max Julian can hold his own.
Dubcnn lets you listen to a few cuts from this supertight album: Max Julian "Im In Love" ft Val Young and Charlie Wilson Max Julian "Smokin N Rollin"(First Single) Max Julian "Hummer For The Summer"

Quick Update - October 12, 2004 By : SGV
I been bigging up Juda Starr and Brian Lewis something crazy lately, and rightfully so. They got the heat when it comes to these live shows. I reported on a few of their upcoming shows, but they've been pushed back. The show this Thursday, with Members of the Visionaries, Brother J and Trenseta, was pushed back to Jan. 7 of 2005, still at the same venue(Vault 350). The show on Friday, with Buckshot, Brother J and others, has been bumped to Jan. 8 of 2005. But, Buckshot will STILL be at the Malibu Inn this Friday, he'll do a few tracks, but the real performance will come in Jan. Stay tuned for that. If you're in the L.A. area, pick up the L.A. Weekly, look for the ad for Friday's show, you'll be in for a pleasant suprise. Peace!

Ice Cube News From MTV! - October 12, 2004 By : Nima

MTV.com have some news up on Ice Cube. Check it out below:
Shooting the $118 million "XXX: State of the Union" has been a different sort of movie experience for Ice Cube.
"This movie's taking up a lot of time," the rapper said during a break at a soundstage last week.
Between training for the role and shooting all summer in Baltimore, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., Cube has had little opportunity to work at his other job. An album planned for late '04 is now looking like a fall 2005 release (see "Ice Cube Ready To Work On Solo LP, Still In Talks With Dre").
In the meantime, Cube has found the time to do one track and hopes to do another before his "XXX" sequel hits theaters.
"I did a single with Lil Jon. He from the dirty dirty, so it's gotta be gutter. He flew out here and we put it down. I think he's doin' a rock version of it. It's called 'The Real N---a Roll Call,' so we had to do it right."
The song, which has been called "Roll Call" on mixtapes, will be featured on Jon's Crunk Juice, due November 16 (see "Lil Jon Mixing Up A Potent New Batch Of Crunk Juice"). Cube and Jon are also talking about teaming to do a song for the "XXX: State of the Union" soundtrack.
"I want something hard," Cube said. "So we been kinda putting our brains together trying to come up with it."
But while Cube's been hitting it off with Jon, talks regarding teaming up with Dr. Dre have fizzled.
"I don't know if that situation is gonna work out, but who knows," said Cube, who was poised to record with Dre and sign to the producer's Aftermath imprint (see "Dr. Dre To Produce Next Ice Cube Record"). "Dre got real busy last year, and the year before that he dropped 50. So I'm doing my thing, he doing his. I'd love to [work with] him."
On the movie front, Cube can next be seen alongside Jay Mohr and Nia Long in "Are We There Yet?," opening January 28. "I play a bachelor who don't like kids, [and I'm] trying to get with their mother, and of course they don't like me," Cube said. "So we kind of meet in the middle and by the end of the day we're at each other's throats."
"XXX: State of the Union" follows a few months later, on May 13.

Xzibit's "WMD" Recieves a "L" From XXL Magazine - October 10, 2004 By : mrtonguetwista
Like the cars featured on his MTV show "Pimp My Ride", Xzibit's career is being made over. After suffering a career-threating injury at the hands of some eses last year, and fresh from his stint riding shotgun with the Aftermath camp towards platinum and gold plaques on his last two albums, respectfully, Mr.X to the Z's driving solo for a change.
Weapons Of Mass Destruction kicks off with a slew of George W. sound bites, leading us to believe X's political voice will be omnipresent throughout the record. Over producer Thayod's swinging drum track and church organs, "Judgement Day" finds the former Likwit Crew member spitting : "At first there was a war on Blacks, and then there was a war on crack/And now there's a war in Iraq". Then on "Criminal Set", over Battlecat's stripped-down four on the floor drum pattern, X flexes on politricks and his lyric-deficient Left Coast peers: "I run a race with the West on my back/While Ya'll the reason why they say niggas from the West can't rap" It seems all good until "Motherfucka", where X's creative wheels fall off. His tired lines like "Smoke like a chimney" and "it's not a fucking game, you know my fucking name" lose over Rick Rock's lazily swinging claps and synthesizers. Luckily, "Tough Guy" finds a revamped Busta Rhymes in the passenger seat, as both MCs spit hot mixtape-ready bars over an Oompa Loompa-inspired Hi-Tek track.
Though Xzibit's flow consistently impresses, "Scent Of A Woman" finds him sounding too formulaic and contrieved, as his mid-tempo chick rhymes are off pace with Hi-Tek's swirling violins and lagging drum track. In the end, Weapons political statements are scant, leaving him sounding as if he's trying to pimp his fans as well
