Interesting comment on Dre
« on: February 24, 2002, 02:42:43 PM »
"As for Dr Dre, Lamond Bloomfield put it best when he said "Dre's a very smart, creative person. He's a good orchestral conductor - the best at that - but he's not a real producer. He's best at taking different people's thoughts and putting them together to form something extraordinary. As for playing instruments and everything people are hearding [on his records]? It's everyone else, but Dre gets the credit for it. Why do you think he liked Sam Sneed so much? He was using Sam for his beats and bass lines." And there you have it! Dre needs other people & in all of his producing, he has always had a co-producer. With N.W.A, he had Yella; on Death Row he had Warren G, Daz & a few others; on his "2001" album he had Mel-Man."

I found this at DPGRecordz.com forum.

A record producer is *exactly* what Dr. Dre is.  No, Dre doesn't play all the instruments in his beats.  Thats not his job though.  Thats what studio musicians are for.  Its pathetic that people post shit like that when they dont really have any understanding of *what* exactly a producers role is in the music making process.

Until you understand what Dre's responsibilities are as a producer, dont even waste our time with stupid shit like this.

And just for kicks, here is a list of other well-known producers who utilize studio musicians for playing instruments....  Teddy Riley, Babyface, Quincy Jones, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Quik, Stevie J., LA Reid. Thats just a small piece of a very long list I could type out. And its not to say these cats cant & dont play some of their own instruments because just like Dre, sometimes they do.

Mate, it wasnt Daz who said it. it was posted by some guy there who quoted another dude in saying it. I do believe Dre is a good producer but he has alot of co producers who have helped him over the years

We aint in the studio when dre does his work so we really can't say what he does or don't do.. And to be honest with you besides Daz who has actually made and impact like dre has.. if these guys really produced the shit and Dre took the credit dont you think one of them would have had a hit record by now without dre?

I thought Dre played the piano? Not forgetting he does know how to control turn tables. They might not be counted as real instruments but it's not just an over night thing to have the talent to use them properly.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

that's because the job of a producer isn't really to play the instruments and shit...most producers nowadays rely on samples and other people playing the instruments for them, the producer then puts all that shit together to make a decent sound altogehter!!

They don't know what a producer is.

Look at another producer, like George Martin, who did all the beatles stuff. He "PRODUCED" the song... Made It, put it together, produced the product.  He played on a few songs, like he did a piano solo here and there, and composed some strings, but generally, the musicians did everything.

Look @ Quincy Jones, LOL.  You ever see him playing a sax? Hell no, it's because on every song he ever did... he didn't do anything! Any Quincy song is him producing, not him playing, nothing.

Technically, a producer is not someone who makes a beat and lets the artist rap/sing over it.  What Dre is, is a real producer: an instructor, motivator, conductor, guider etc.
