Anyone who has been watching VH1 this month knows it's metal month. Everything they're showing is either a behind the music about Pantera or Ratt, a reality show about a 'metal' supergroup, top 40 metal songs, top 40 metal moments, ect.

well anyways i'm watching a rerun of the last episode of "Heavy" a documentary about the history of heavy metal ( i missed it last night ) and they're talking about the influence Guns N Roses and underground thrash bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and especially Metallica had on getting rid of that scene.  IT'S ABOUUUUUUUUT FUCKING TIME THIS GETS ACKNOWLEDGE! i'm so sick and tired of picking up a rolling stone type magazine and they're there sucking Kurt Cobains dick saying how he was the one responsible for killing off heavy metal, and how grunge TOOOK OVER THE WORLDand yaddda yaddda yadda. FUCK NIRVANA this is how it REAALLY went down.

1987- a time when bon jovi and white snake were on top of the world. the not so secret to success was to fluff your hair like farrah facet, put on more make up than a 58 year old jewma , realease a party song for your first single then a power ballad as your second.Just go to LA and do this and you'll sell 3 million
while this was going on in the mainstream you had Four Los Angeles area bands countering this attack.....slayer who were bringing us "raining blood" , Megadeth with "peace sells but whos buying", and Metallica who had released 3 straight classic metal albums that were converting masses of fans day by day (they're STILL doing this too btw) and were in the process of making two more classics. and waiting to be released....guns n roses' appetite for destruction

1988-apetite for destruction explodes and kills everything that was known previously in the mainstream metal world from the last 8 years. poofy hair was now straight, spandex was now replaced by leather , and pink hankys and feathers were now replaced by black and blue bandannas and top hats. Hair metal now was given a blow to it's image, ou....yet it was still alive

but musical justice would be served. Metallica released the musically epic .....and justifce for all, which debuted HIGHon the billboard chart with no promotion at all. .....hair metal was now hit with a musical blow

1989- hair metal was still alive , but the decline of it's popularity can be pin pointed to this year, what was underground was now starting to be what was popular. everything from Coven, Slayer, and Venom was now en vougue. the trend was not how much make up you could put on and how glamorous you could be but how HARD and/or Musically Complex you could make your music. the only hair metal acts that survived this era was you harder acts like Motley Crue and your George Lynch lead bands.

1990- hair metal faced another hit when some Cowboys from Hell hit the ground runnin. Pantera took what was great about bands like Kiss, metallica, and slayer , compressed it and made a monster that would go on to influence metal bands in the seattle area.....with that said by the end of 90 hair metal was already on it's way out....many 'popular' acts were floppin on the charts , consumers were strarted to become more enamered with Dangerous groups like Guns N roses , pantera, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and a new street movement Hip Hop.....it was now again cool to be masculine.

1991. the official death of hair metal is in this year. and not because of the release of Nirvana's nevermind. Guns N Roses faned the anti hair metal fan when they released TWO albums ....grasp that TWO albums that debuted at the top of the charts in the same week! and stayed there for some time.....on these albums they took muscianship to the extreme by incorperting symphonies, authentic blues,  and jazz instrumentation.  With Guns n Roses topping the charts and shaking up the industry again, Metallica doubled the effort by releasing the biggest metal album of the decade.....the black album. with this album and all the popularity it brought to authentic hevy metal , a quote from chick hern works best here to describe the DEATH of Hair metal after the black album......this game was in the refridgerator , the lights were out , the eggs were getting hard and the jellloooooo wassss jiiiiigg......oh then nirvana releases nevermind in december and smells like teen spirit and some how it 'kills hair metal' (?)....ling

pretty much i didnt read all that because i could give a crap less about "Hair Metal"....but i would like to say one thing

FUCK NIRVANA

Diabolical

1. Venom were some of the most un-technical guitarists in metal.
2. Pantera were a glam/hair band before they became what they were in the 90.

I agree with just about everything you said. The Black Album was #1 for 4 weeks in '91, well before Nirvana ever hit number 1. The Use Your Illusions stayed high on the charts but only Use Your Illusion 2 hit number 1 for a couple weeks thanks to the dominace of another reason hair metal went south; Garth Brooks.  Roping in the Wind was number 1 for 7 straight weeks in '91, then came back in '92 for another 8 straight weeks from February to April. Billy Ray Cyrus,(remember him?) also dominated '92. His album Some Gave All hit number 1 on June 13th, and stayed there until October 3rd, only to be dropped by another Garth Brooks album; The Chase for 6 more weeks. In fact in '92 the name Garth Brooks or Billy Ray Cyrus was at the top of the charts for 34 weeks. We cant forget poppy hip hop either. Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em was number 1 for 20 weeks, 18 straight weeks until Vanilla Ice came in for another 16 straight weeks. Another couple of bands that gave a big alternative to hair metal were U2 and REM. Both had a couple big albums each well before Nevermind. But as long as the current mainstream rock journalist were 17 year old depressed losers in '91 when Cobain became their hero all we are going to here about is the myth of Kurt and how he saved the world and died for Rock's sins. Don't they ever get sick of making Cobain out to be the Jesus rock?

^thank You! , there was SOOOOOOOO MUCH going on musically at this time

hip hop was becoming marketable and was blowing up, this is when it became cool to wear baggy pants

REM, Janes Addiction, ect.  were already making  marks for "alternative" music before nevermind

country was BIG back then , i still remember watching 20/20  one friday night and seeing someone talk about them selling cowboy boots in times sqare

also, the NEW wave of hippys, does anyone remember that?
