Ice Cube - You Know How We Do It (Real G-Funk)
« on: January 23, 2002, 12:37:05 PM »
Damn y'all, today I was diggin through my old CD's and I came across Ice Cube - Lethal Injection.. I almost forgot about this masterpiece completley.. fuck, I've neglected this CD badly.. I ain't listened to it in years. So I popped in and started chillin.. reminiscin and shit.. then You Know How We Do It came on (right after Ghetto Bird).. damn this shit takes me back. This is REAL westcoast shit.. when Cube was makin good music.. '93.. when the West was on top and G-Funk was in its prime. It almost made me fuckin cry, for real.. I miss this shit so much.. the rap industry is so polluted nowadays.. its 90% garbage in my opinion. Its really said that REAL G-Funk is almost extinct, and the G-Funk Era was years, AND YEARS ago.. makes me feel old already.. and I'm only 17! (Turnin 18 tommorow). I don't really even know why I made this topic.. I guess just to see if anyone else here has the same passion for G-Funk as me, and misses it as much.. '92-'95 is the period when some of the best music was made in my opinion. I hardly even buy new CD's anymore.. just listen to my old ones and I'm chillin.. shit takes me back. Anyway, You Know How We Do It might just be my favorite song of all time, and for all you newer rap heads that ain't heard it, check it out along with the rest of the Lethal Injection CD.

Timeless CLASSIC!

I miss '92-'96 especially when The Chronic first dropped because the West was at the top for a long time after that.

Hell yeah I miss those good ole days of rap.
Nothing nowadays compares to rap from 92-96.
Man I love that old G-funk sound so much.  I listen to my older cd's way more than I listen to my new ones.  And yeah You Know How We Do It is straight classic, I love that song.

I'm so feelin this thread.  It's so tru about today's music.  It's all shit.  Cube back then was on fire.  Classic track combined with a classic, "deadly-soundin" voice.

He comes off so real on this track.  Like Pac.. he had that type of voice that just made you believe him!  Aint no believable voices in hip hop no more.  They all sound like they trying to hard.  They all sound so fabricated.

(Off the subject a bit.. but still kinda related.. you know me, I gotta PLUG the West!)
I was checkin this stupid Ja Rule and J-Lo remix video and Ja is tryin so fuckin hard to look like Pac and dance like Pac did in “How Do You Want It” and “Toss It Up.”  I fuckin hate, hate, HATE today's music.  90-95, where the years, ya'll.

So all we can do is KEEP supporting indie / underground hip hop (Westcoast hip hop.)  Don't purchase big label retail music which usually gets ripped anyway (i.e. Nas, Jay Z, Ja, J-Lo, R&B shit, etc.)  They gon' get they money regardless.  And plus, buy purchasing this shit, it justifies them making it in the first place.  If you all want Ja Rule to go away, then you have to stop purchasing his music.  It's simple.

We all post here because we love the music that isn't loved by most.  (Most love MTV.)  Be real about it and be real about why your here.  purchase indie shit and support real artists.

Fuck man, i happen to think Nas is very real, VERY real, and he dropped a front to back solid album.  I love indepent wets coast shit, and underground stuff, and i support that shit too.  The problem is, on the westcoast, very few artists drop albums that are complete nowadays.  I mena, i love Daz but a lot of the stuff he puts out is shit....he could do way better.  Take Nas and jay z, wheter you like them or not, they both put a lot of work into their albums and dropped complete albums.  I wish more artists would try a little harder, but it seems like on the west all they care about is getting shit outa s fast as possible and making 3 or four good tracks, and a bunch of filler.

Deltron on the west is holding it down, Dilated, Warren G, while most others need to work harder to satisfy me nowadays.  Cuz the shit that is coming out is not even touhing Nas, or even Jay Z (not totally feelin Blueprint but i recognize it is quality).

And yo, todays music is not all shit, not even close!  There is alot of quality music out there, ypu just gotta open your mind.  Do you guys realize that while we think of LETHAL Injection as a classic, that is where older Ice Cube fans say he fell the fuck off?  Crazy, cuz YOU KNOW HOW WE DO IT is one of my favourites ever too......

BAsically, shit changes, there is always great music ,you just gotta look farther then in front of your nose.....try the new MASTA ACE- Disposable Arts, it is incredible.

I miss the G FUNK era too, but it is gone!  I got all my old shit to listen too, thank god, cuz G Funk is my favourite sound.  However, i am glad rap has evolved.  I honestly think there is more great music out today then ever before, it just depends how open you wanna be and what your interests are.

Teecee,

I'm totally feelin the fact that you put this much into your post.  Thank you.  And, I agree.  Some Westcoast artist's need to put more into their music.  Daz..  I can't even explain why hes been doin some of the shit that hes been doin lately.  But on the flip side,  there are equal concerns about ALOT of Eastcoast artist who could do much better for their fans.  Lets take Swizz Beats for example.  The Ruff Ryders sell tons of records off of his beats and alot of them are shit.  Just like you feel that alot of Daz beats are shit.  Then you got lack luster MC's like Jada and DMX.  (With his unoriginal, "2Pac bitten" style)

It's not that I don't like Nas.  I was into Nas back in the Main Source days.  I've got TONS of Eastcoast OG's from that time period when The East was knockin.  Gangstarr, early Nas, Freddie Foxxx, EPMD and the Hit / Def Squad.  I remember buying MC Serch just for that Nas track.  I was waiting for Nas's first album to drop in Dec of 1993 when I got back from Saudi.  So I do respect good hip hop from both coasts.  I've even got all of the above listed artist's shit in OG.  All of Erick Sermon, PMD, Hit and Def Squad.  All OG.  Tons of early Wu.   It's just that music today is so damn flossy.  Or Jiggy.  Can't feel it.  There's NO R&B out there that I'm feelin.  All this Jiggy / Neo Classic soul shit.  Booty!  (IMO.)

You're totally right about Masta Ace.  This is an indie joint from the EAST that REALLY knocks.  Anyway, we may disagree on some items, but I'm feelin how much you put in your post. G-Lookin!

Nice to see alot of y'all agree with me.. but don't get it twisted, I ain't sayin all newer rap is garbage.. just that I feel G-Funk the most.. way more than any other sub-genre of hip-hop. However, I ain't feelin the "newer G-Funk" sound (Fred Wreck, Meech Wells, etc).. I like some of Battlecat's shit, though. I know the G-Funk era is over, but it would be nice to see more of that old G-Funk shit every once in awhile, naw mean?

And Prince Techniec, right back at ya homie.. thanks for the props. You from T-Dot, right?
