AMA Update: Michael Jackson To Perform

In addition to accepting the Artist of the Century award at the 29th American Music Awards on Wednesday (Jan. 9), Michael Jackson will also perform his 1988 No. 1 hit "Man in the Mirror" on the show, to be broadcast on ABC. Michael's sister Janet will appear on the show via satellite from Tokyo, where she is promoting her latest Virgin album, "All for You."

As reported last week, the confirmation of Jackson's appearance during the ceremony came after weeks of turmoil that reached a boiling point last month when AMA executive producer Dick Clark filed a $10 million lawsuit against Recording Academy president Michael Greene, who oversees the annual Grammy Awards.

Jackson had originally agreed to take part in the AMA ceremonies, but backed out, allegedly because of what Clark claims is Greene's policy that artists who appear on the AMAs are not allowed to participate in the Grammys telecast. Clark specifically cited Jackson's original change of plans in announcing his lawsuit.

In other AMA show news, Luther Vandross will perform George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" as a tribute to the late Beatles guitarist, while James Taylor will participate in a Reba McEntire-hosted tribute to Garth Brooks, who is being honored with the Award of Merit. The show will also pay tribute to industry notables that passed away in 2001, including Aaliyah, Chet Atkins, Perry Como, John Lee Hooker, and John Phillips.

As previously reported, Alicia Keys leads the AMA field with five nominations. Britney Spears, Mick Jagger, Cher, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Shaggy, Brooks & Dunn, Yolanda Adams, and show co-host Sean "P. Diddy" Combs will perform.
