Kemp seeks Bulls' final roster spot

By K.C. Johnson
Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO - With most needs met, an open roster spot and two weeks until training camp begins, the Chicago Bulls have the luxury of working out a wide variety of players to see if something strikes their fancy.

But few could have imagined this: Shawn Kemp will visit the Berto Center this week.

Ten years and three months after facing Michael Jordan and Co. in their prime as a member of the SuperSonics during the 1996 NBA Finals, the six-time All-Star would seem to have little chance to snag the final spot.

Retired since playing 79 games with Orlando in the 2002-03 season, Kemp, 36, has a past that includes a stint in rehabilitation for cocaine abuse, two arrests for marijuana possession and weight problems.

The Bulls already have Malik Allen, who can step out and hit the midrange jumper. Kemp was known as a solid but never spectacular shooter during his 14-year NBA career.

But Kemp, whose association with coach Scott Skiles dates to their formative basketball years in Indiana in the late 1980s, has been on a mission to return to the NBA since 2005.

Claiming he now weighs 257 pounds, three pounds lighter than in his prime, Kemp was arrested for marijuana possession in July. He told Seattle reporters the drugs were old and he hadn't used drugs since 2004.

The court case is pending.

The Bulls also are expected to look at former Orlando center Andrew DeClercq.

Luke Schenscher, who averaged 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in 20 games with the Bulls last season, is the leading candidate to fill the final roster spot.

Interesting...I hope the Bulls give him that spot so we can finally see what this "strong comeback" talk has been all about. Should be interesting to see where he ends up when the season begins...PeACe

Ummm...Jordan's a little too old and doesn't have the will/need to refresh his reputation. Shawn Kemp claims he wants to exit the NBA with a bang, he can't get over the chance he blew of being a legend...PeACe

it was a joke nigga. but don't be surprised if someone responds to this thread saying jordan could still do it, you'd be surprised how many people actually feel like that.

i remember him doing that in portland when he weighed like 350 lbs, but if he's made all these changes then he should play power , unless they want to do a dual power forward plan in chicago when ben sits

They want a quicker team up in Chicago.. they like that fast-paced game, and with the new generation of untraditional/undersized centers, I think he'll be most eligible for back-up center on their squad (if he lands the last spot)...PeACe

Kemp A No-Show For Bulls Tryout

No-show Kemp blows chance with Bulls
By K.C. Johnson

Shawn Kemp's planned workout at the Berto Center never materialized Monday, and it's unlikely the six-time NBA All-Star will receive another invitation from the Bulls.

Kemp experienced travel problems late Sunday night but still arrived in Chicago early Monday morning. Instead of working out with the Bulls, he traveled to his hometown of Elkhart, Ind., to visit an ailing relative.

Kemp, 36, who retired in 2003 after 14 seasons because of weight issues, also missed a planned workout with Dallas earlier this year.

The former dynamic dunker, known as "The Reign Man" in his prime with Seattle, has been trying to interest NBA teams since shedding about 60 pounds in 2005.

The Bulls, who considered Kemp an extreme long shot, have one roster spot to fill before training camp begins Oct. 3. Kemp and coach Scott Skiles have a longstanding relationship, dating to their formative basketball years in Indiana and throughout various meetings during their NBA careers.

Luke Schenscher, who averaged 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds in 20 games with the Bulls last season, remains the leading candidate to fill the vacant spot.
