Important Question For The Forum Regulars
« on: November 09, 2001, 03:28:53 AM »
Sup,
I'm wondering how exactly you guys like to hear about new artists and what makes you want to buy an album. I just want some of your feedback because I'm trying verrry hard to promote this Contraversy album on here and with the exception of a few, it seems nobody could give a shit about it.

So what am I doing wrong? People are always talking about how they wish the west coast hip hop scene would blow up again with lots of new talent, but it seems everytime a talented new artist pops up, they get ignored in favor of the existing stars. I know some of you like Incognito or BPG wont buy anything unless Dre or Snoop is on it, thats fine, but for the more open-minded music-buyers, what makes you say  'hmm that looks dope, ill give it a shot'?

just some market research folks, give me some intelligent feedback please.

WELL IM GETTIN A COPY OF THE ALBUM IN QUESTION..

BUT...

REASONS I TRY 2 SUPPORT A NEW ARTIST

1) IF I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THEM I TEND TO SHOW AN INTREST, IF ITS A VERY NEW ARTIST I TRY 2 FIND OUT ABOUT THEM

2) I ALSO LIKE THE AVAILABILITY OF SNIPPETS (MP3 OR RAM) TO HEAR THE QUALITY OF TRACKS

3) IF I AM STILL INTRESTED I WILL ORDER OR GO BUY A COPY

--REMEMBER ONE THING--

DRE & SNOOP AND ALL THE ARTISTS OUT NOW WERE UNKNOWN AT SOME POINT

ITS UP 2 US 2 MAKE THE NXT "DRE AND SNOOP"

SO SUPPORT NEW ARTISTS WHERE U CAN

peace

3 ways to get me to listen to new music....

1. As I get older I'm looking for conscious rappers of two types.  Either of the Talib Kweli, Mos Def mold, or the angry politically challenging type such as Ras Kass, the Coup, Poor Righteous Teachers, or even even artists like Gza, Rza, Outkast, Goodie Mob, I want to listen to music that can stimulate my thought process......

2. If your trying to get me to buy rap music polluted with sex, violence, drugs, cliche' topics such as those... Then like Incognito and BPG, the artists name has to be attatched to names such as Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, D-12, Xzibit, or most likely I'm not going to buy it.

3.  If I read about an artist and it seems like they are saying something that I haven't heard before, or that they have a different way of viewing the world, then I might cop the album.

Hope that helps... peace

aww man thats a tough one. very good question

well i think its simply  because ppl are into the regular west coast hip hop music, not just dre and snoop but peeps like rosoce, knoc turn al, soopafly etc.
i think ppl need to spread the word and get some attention for the artist and make people listen to the artists tracks.

what makes me buy a new album is the attention. well i know you promote contraversy and did that very well and went to the site and checked those songs, they had a few real good ones but i did that cause you told me .
i think ppl need to be more open minded when it comes to names in west coast rap. i mean if all those songs featured snooop or dre produced them then im sure ppl would get that shit. i dont know but i think its the name. a lot on this board feelin knoc turn al right know but thats just because he's hangin with dre and all them. if it wasnt for dre ppl wouldnt be checkin for him.

I agree...

Too many people here only pay attention when people bring news about Snoop and Dre... now my site, it' s about Snoop so I try to leave the " underground " scene for others... I also know very little about it since promotion for their albums is not in Wisconsin... so I check out sites like WCKILLAZ, Westcoast2k, WC Afterschock and others... that way I can get into a lot of stuff....  I just got into an underground rapper from  Long Beach called " Mr. Money Loc "  ... I have his new LP and it' s tight... the name of him might sound quite stupid, but he has some real straight songs.

Loc, I've ordered the Contraversy joint, it took a while for me to get around to it! I had to bug the hell outta my mom to let me switch to a new server, V21, & while I was at it I bugged tha hell outta her to let me use her credit card to the Contraversy joint & eventually it worked  ;D It should b here by monday.
As for the question, I love researching new artists an' shit, & now i've got the internet it's alot easier to get info. If it's dope & I like it i'll cop it, if it doesn't impress me much I won't, simple as. Alot of bandwagon hip-hop fans will cop whatever's popular at that present time. I was talking to this bopper Eminem fan an' she was like "I'll still support him even if he goes outta fashion". That shit is nonsense an' I know it ain't like that 4 me. It prolly was when I was younger, lol, but now I love to learn the knowledge an' shit, it's like a part of life now.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

I dont know dawg... all that really matters to me is how it sounds. Like if I hear a new song on tha radio, and dont know anything about the artist, but he has a dope flow and a nice beat.. I'll most likely end up buying the album. I haven't heard any of the snippets though... I dont know how to do shit on my comp and I dont even know HOW to hear them... not that I haven't wanted to... cuz you know, I'm mexican.. I wanna see what thes Latino rappers are all about.

It's different on here though, it's tha net. You can't just put music out there like the radio... you gotta get people to put in effort and listen to it themselves. And Contraversy being underground, and being hispanic, it's probably even harder to get people interested... So what I would do is just put up snippets of track with Conraversy and other more popular artists... they got tracks with Kam and Kurupt right? People read Kam and Kurupt and they wanna listen to it.. they might end up liking Contraversy too and there you go.

Probably sounds a lil easier than what it is.... but just dont give up. It's probably hard and all... but if muthafuckers dont wanna listen... scream that shit in their ear. FLAWLESS RECORDS, CONTRAVERSY *!*AVAILABLE NOW*!* NEW WEST COAST UNDERGROUND, UNDERAPPRECIATED, UNDERESTIMATED... BUY THAT SHIT!!!.... scream that shit till your lungs fall out.

p.s. I looked for it at tha store last time I went... you said it might be there... wasn't there though.. maybe next time.

Good Question.  I Think The Big Problem Is People Like To be Able To Express Things That They Are Passionate About. LOL.  I Know That Sounds Like Crap.  But What I Mean By It Is This: If I Buy The New Dr. Dre Album, I Can Talk To ALL Of Yall And Get Your Opinion On It.  We Can Talk About How We Love This one Song, Etc. And To All of Us, Our Music Is Very Important.

Now, If I Go Buy The Contraversy Album, It's Gonna Have To be My Little Secret, You Know?  If I Like The Album, And REALLLY PASSIONATELY LIKE IT, Like As In I Just Enjoy Bumpin' It, I Will Get No Support From Anybody, Because Nobody Else Has It.

I Think That's What Pushes People Towards The More Regular Types Of CD's That Are Out From Your Name Brands.  It's A Shame.

I Wish I Knew The Answer To Your quesiton, But I Think That's My Feeling.

its a shame, but its reality. its athat's why 'bigger' artists seem to "break" new artists recently we've seen dre&knocc, dre&bilal dre&mary j, dre & busta, nate/kurupt and shade shiest, nate/kurupt and fabulous etc etc.. the list is huge.

sometimes its driven by friendship, sometimes by money, and sometimes by label pressure.

breaking alone in the bizz looks like a very hard thing to do.

Mr. Loc is 100% RIGHT!!!  Everyone on this board should be supporting West coast hip-hop.  Overall, I think that, by nature, people go by name and or producer recognition.  This is bad.  I say again, bad.  There is so much un-tapped talent out there and the majority of us do not give it a chance.

Me, on the other hand… I thrive off of independent releases such as “Controversy’s” latest.  I ordered my copy from CD Now and ya’ll should too.  No, in fact, check out Flawless Entertainments website and order it from there.  I, personally, am totally into owning the music.  If I can get an OG copy of the CD, I will, just so that I’ll have the artwork and production credits on hand.  It makes the whole experience complete.  Downloading just doesn’t do it.  I’ve got to have the booklet open, while I’m listening.  Blunt burning while I’m reading… etc.

Independent West coast hip-hop is considered rare to me due to its limited distribution and truthfully, I wouldn’t want it any other way.  When shit blows up like Ja Rule and that other East coast bull shit, it’s has a tendency to destroy the quality and the realness of the music.  Any TRU collector out there goes for the OG.  Point being, ya’ll go out there and support Flawless.  This album is blazing.  Trayz.
