PS3 Launch Outsells Xbox 360 Launch

Sony today announced that they have sold 1 million Playstation 3s in North America since the launch of the console six weeks ago.

That makes the Playstation 3 the fastest selling home console Sony has ever launched.

Microsoft sold 600,000 of their Xbox 360s from their November launch to the second week in January.

    "SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming." ... "Reaching the one million mark for PS3 is the first of many major milestones for us as we head into a new year. Even more impressive, is that we were able to accomplish this feat while successfully managing two other gaming platforms--PS2 and PSP," said Tretton. "With three PlayStation platforms now available to gamers, 2007 will be about software and delivering innovative, new experiences and award-winning franchises to consumers, both through retail and through our online PLAYSTATION Network."

I went to Toys R Us today... looking for bargains.  This is what I saw.

A sign as I walked in the store "We've got 'em... PS3 - $599". 

Another sign near the game department. 

Another sign on the shelf. 

Another sign by the cash register in the gaming department. 

On the shelf, were row after row after row of PS3 sixaxis controllers.

Now, I walked around the corner to the Wii section.  The wii has sold by all accounts 3 times as many systems as the PS3 has; and has been out for the same amount of time... this leads me to speculate that if people want to say the ps3 isn't selling because the holidays are over, why is the wii still out of stock weeks after the holidays if it's already sold 3 times as many as the ps3?

The Wii section had no systems available.  There were no controllers available.  There were no nunchucks, no classic controllers, and no wi-motes... the only thing you could buy were games (I didn't check to see which were sold out) and some of the 3rd party stuff like gloves.  I mean they didn't even have a fucking CONTROLLER available, much less the system.

That article makes it really seem like its a product of availability.  If the Xbox had shipped as many units to stores as PS3, it would have likely sold similar numbers.

And if you check my thread where I'm selling 7 Wii's and 2 PS3's you'll see that I've now sold 4 Wii's and no PS3's.  PS3 isn't even really selling for a premium on ebay at all.

If you're talking about the Wii, that's just not true because my friend bought one shortly after Christmas, from a new shipment.  The ps3's have also been shipping steadily since the launch.
