West Coast Hater
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:45:57 AM »
I work with this guy who hates west coast rap and I'm looking for some tracks that might change his mind that the west coast is more than pimpin' bitches and killing people. He's 30 years old and big into Fu Schnickens, old school Wu-Tang, pretty much everything from the late 80s and early 90s east coast era. The only west coast rappers he knows/likes are Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, 2pac, and the ones from the Menace II Society soundtrack, which is the only west coast CD he has. PLEASE NO DOGG POUND! I've already tried. lol

So far I have:

Planet Asia - Everyday Ritual
Masta Ace - Da Grind
Sly Boogy - Ridiculous
Frontline - Black Jack (the ones signed to E-A-Ski's label, not the ones from LA)
Ras Kass - It Is What It Is
Ras Kass - The End
Crooked I - Leave Us Alone
Celly Cel - It's Goin' Down Tonight
3X Krazy - Keep It On The Real
D.O.C. - The Formula

I'll be checking for Paris real soon. Thanks for the suggestion. Other than No One Can Do It Better, I don't think he'd like any D.O.C. stuff. And I think he'd stop talking to me if I gave him some Suga Free. I don't think his wife would like his music too much.

Coulda sworn he was from the west coast, but I'll take the song off just in case.

doc is texan, but you can point out dre's attention to funk. some dre instrumentals with a gang of live instruments are so alive with music (xxplosive, light speed, bang bang, some l.a. niggaz, any from the chronic if you can get 'em instrumental) that they may help one understand the proficient musicality of west coast production.

As far as I'm concerned, D.O.C. is west coast. He's never been on that down south tip and he's pretty much Dre's right hand man.

But I wish it was as simple as giving him beats. Dude doesn't like the west coast flavor of music at all aside from the weed songs and the basic west coast rappers that everyone has heard about. I'm looking for the more lyrical type of west coast artist with a more old school type beat to accompany them. Believe me, I've tried giving him some newer stuff the Messy Marv, Balance, Young Hoggs, Xzibit, Federation, and he just tosses the CD in the garbage after listening to it.

Much appreciate Cvrle. I already know he won't like Lynch but I'll check out the rest of your list.

He asked me to do this after I told him I could. I'm not trying to force it down his throat or anything. I have a pretty good list of songs. All I need is a couple more. I can understand why he doesn't really like the newer west coast rap. After you reach a certain age, everything starts to sound the same. That's why I'm trying to find somethng unique away from the typical funky/hyphy/etc. sound.
