Every Producers Signature Sound

Okay y'all, the West is full of producers that alot have established their own unique brand of West coast funk.  Try to think of what makes every producer's song that he does...

Dr. Dre - Now known for his futuristic style that is filled with those crisp keys & soft authentic bass notes.  Also, the little sounds that make a Dre record like those squeeky/high pitched noises that Dre incorporates into his live music.

Battlecat - Who has more of a funky sound with his "clap" drums & fartin bass.  He stays away from the live instruments and uses the synthesizers like the korg & moog keyboards.  More of a tribute to the early West Coast sound of '92.

Warren G - His style has always been almost clasical, laid back & smooth with tracks that use heavy sampling from oldies.  

DJ Quik - Quik's style is authentic in the way that he too uses live instruments like guitars & keyboards.  Quik to has that psycodelic feel with his uptemo tracks that use ecentric guitar rifts and heavy piano drills.  

Some non West Coast producers...

The Neptunes - The core of Neptune beats are the stiff bass & drum lines that are almost the same in all Neptune tracks.  Listen to their songs and you'll be able to pic it out.

Rockwilder - He came hot with songs like "Da Rockwilder" & "Imagine That" with his almost wc style synths & thumpin horns.  

Rick Rock - Rick Roc has been a lil repetitive with songs like "Change Tha Game," & "I Can't Deny it."  His style too his of the West coast with that grinding bass and clap drum style.

Who else can you think of that you can pick out there sig style?  There is still a lot, Fredwreck, Meech Wells, Jelly Roll, Daz, Blaqthoven etc.

I like what you said about battlecat..."tribute" to the old g-funk sound because the old g-funk sound wasn't as synthesized,dre used instruments galore back then and others followed,Battlecat does like the old g-funk sound but with syntheisizers...nice Nito,peace-Tanjint

dj premier- chops up several samples then adds a random off beat piano riff

rza-usually depends on which artist he's working with but he also uses off beat random piano riffs with abstract sounds or mafioso godfather-like themes once in a while with heavy samples from karate flicks

timbo- uses off beat african tribal percussion with an electric twist, uses abstract sounds and turns them into melodies (like crickets, bird chirps, ect.) mixed with a very original futuristic sound which ALOT of  producers try to duplicate with no success

[West Coast Veteran]

The Trackmasters - Sample Old 80's Songs And Add Smooth Basslines And/Or Different Drum Programs.  

Irv Gotti - Deep Basslines Similar To The WC Sound. Adds Different Things In Different Songs. Fuck I Can't Explain.  

Dat Nigga Daz - Styles Vary But Best Known For His Valley Deep Bass Lines Like On "Dogg Pound Gangstaz".

Primo has quite a raw, deep feel to his beats. His shit sounds almost, well old, but in a dope way. Like on Royce' "Boom", the high pitched classical sounds an' shit, kinda a l'il trademark.

I totally agree wit the Neptunes remark, it's that certain drum beat that appears in almost every song they produce. Alot of the times it comes off pretty tight though.

Dre also has a couple of noticable guitar riffs, e.g "Xxplosive" - "Blow Ya Mind". He also layers his production alot.

Mos Def - plays alotta live instruments by himself - congas, drums, guitars

Redman - he actually produces sometimes and he comes with cosmic sounds, ruff drums and ALWAYS with a Parliament/Funkadelic sample.

Tanjint; yeah Dre also did use live instruments in the "Chronic" days, but he used the bass keyboard (moog), live bass (Colin Wolfe) and his drums back then where more rat-tat-tat!

Johnny J's style hasn't changed over the years, some producers can do that.  I guess you can put J's style under as smooth, funky & emotional.  He also makes some thugged out tracks for pac to mash on.  I think Pac had lots of controll of what Johnny J did in the studio beat wise.

DJ Uneek [Bone's producer]: He is known for his dark and haunting production, particularly on E.1999 Eternal, his musical masterpiece. He often combines a piano loop with a flute, medium bass w/heavy drums. Its hard to say what a signature song of his would be, cuz he has so many great tracks. But A brilliantly constructed Uneek beat that truly defines his sound would probably be Dayz Of Our Livez. "Eternal" and "Land Of The Heartless" are also good examples. However, he switches it up from album to album. His production on AOW was dark, but not quite as dark as Eternal.
