Joell Ortiz = the new Big Pun?
« on: June 07, 2007, 07:19:18 AM »
Overweight Latino with above-average rapping ability? I'm convinced.

All we need is some 'candid camera' footage of old boy smacking the shit out of his wife with a pistol and it's a done deal as far as I'm concerned.

I'm just saying.

Yeah the brotha is ill on the mic. I am bumping Bodega right now. This album is LIGHT YEARS ahead of 95% of what is coming out right now. I hope Dre does not drop the ball on him when it is his time for a big budget album.

Hmmm. You're absolutely right, but unfortunately the one thing that struck me when bumping this album (and I've been on it solidly, no homo, for about three weeks) is that it's the kind of CD Aftermath and Interscope would never release.

I'd say that when his Aftermath album drops (if it does), expect less 'Hip-Hop' and more 'I Love My Chick'. Sad, but I'd wager almost certainly true.

True. I think Joell is diverse enough to pull it off but I would only want it for a couple of tracks. His strength is lyricism but like you said I think Interscope would have a image and vision they feel he should be. Artists like him are extinct on major labels and go unoticed most of the time.

The best I've heard in a long while....I hope Dre does not try to make him talk all that gangsta shit because you can tell that is not who he is and he is ok just rappin about everyday shit in the hood...If his shit does not drop on Aftermath by next year this time, I hope he is able to bounce before his buzz is gone.

i wouldnt call pun a above average rapper, dude was sick lyrically and had very possibly the best breathe control ever, dude weighed 3700 pounds and could spit that rapid fire flow.  I wouldnt say Ortiz is better then Pun, but he is dope in his own right.  His content is a breathe of fresh air tho

Dunno about the Pun comparison, I'd rather judge rappers for themselves than compare them to others, but I definately agree that Ortiz is someone to expect dope material from. I haven't heard all of his Brick album, but what I have heard from it and from mixtapes is dope, no doubt.

Whenever he gets around to making his Dre album, I hope it'll be basically the same lyrical heat with the best Dre production. None those marketing singles that pull the masses in, just something for the hip-hop heads, just like it's been so far.

Yup, although I highly doubt that Interscope will ever release an album through Aftermath that doesn't have a commercial-appealing single...
But yeah, Ortiz is dope!
