Gotta agree with the Nas quote though. It Was Written was so fucking ill. I love that period of rap when shit was turning into that Mafioso cuban link shit.

Well the best are the best can't change it.

What if he mentioned for example this as his top 5??

1. Lil' Wayne
2. Lloyd Banks
3. Young Jeezy
4. Jim Jones
5. Rick Ross

Y'all would be mad as fuck and whine about "how they have no skills" etc.

The point is, there are just a few mc's who are the best, the order might differ but there's a select few that deserve in the top 10 mc's of all time, and these people always get mentioned cause they ARE top 10 of all time, period.

Illmatic has had way more impact on the industry then Jay-Z ever had, imo from the top 5 he picked should be:

1. Nas
2. Eminem
3. 2Pac
4. Biggie
5. Jay-Z

I dunno who to place first, 4 and 5 are definite my choice, but the top 3 is hard. He picked Nas, Eminem and 2Pac. I like Pac's music but he is too overhyped imo his death brought him more fame than his music. Eminem has dropped 2 classics imo, 2 great albums, plus all his features in the era 1999-2005 have been dope. I think his mic skills are topnotch, but Nas is the best. He still droppin' heat to this day, hasn't fallen off or something and stuff.

2 Classics? Dont know about that, SSLP and MMLP were great albums...I case you could consider them classic the same way Stillmatic and Blueprint are sometimes called "classics". But if your criteria is catalogue, which I agree is the correct way to judge imo, then where is Cube?? IMO you can argue that Cube has SIX Albums better than Em's best:  Straight Outta Compton, Amerikkkas Most Wanted, Death Certificate, Predator, Lethal Injection, and Bow Down, we're talking about 2 completely different levels of greatness here.

Speaking of Cataglogue...Biggie was a GREAT MC but the dude only dropped two albums, one of which is severely overrated....its crazy that people consistently have him in their top 5.

And you know we can't forget Scarface.

A-M-E-N. Real talk right right there...Scarface is criminally underrated...Scarface = Jay-Z X 10000

Gotta agree with that, I love that kind of rap, but only when it's executed buy the right people (Nas, Raekwon, Kool G Rap, Ghostface, Biggie...).

Also, gotta agree with Xander's last post.+1 to both of you

wait hold up, did a mothefucker just say Illmatic has had more impact on the industry than Jay-Z has in general? the same oh-so-influence-potent Illmatic that didnt go platinum in sales until 6 years later? are you telling me this album has had more impact that NAS himself has? Because Jay-Z has way more influence/impact that Nas and this one album.

you bring your ass back to this topic and debate this bullshit with me right now.  >:(

Illmatic might not be really that big of an influence in your books, but let me tell you that this opened up the door for a lot of rappers in the underground and shit.

Jay took over the mainstream for several years with his first release(s), i recognize this, but the (artistic) success of Nas made New York rap big again, in a time where the west was dominating (the early 90's era, anyone??) so yeah i definately consider Nas opening doors for rappers and stuff, people always see the big (mainly based on sales) success of Jay-Z, but i would go as far to say that if Illmatic didn't drop, Jay probably wouldn't be where he's at today and certainly wouldn't have that big of a status right now.

I'm a fan of both, but i gotta say Illmatic >>> Jay-Z's whole catalogue. The lyrics, flow and simple yet superb beats on Illmatic are not to be fucked with.
