Bad Year for tha West
« on: October 30, 2007, 10:05:25 AM »
So far this year i think Pac had the biggest selling album of the year by a large scale showing that new artists are still in the shadow of the 90s era. There's only 5 west coast artists atm that still have a big presence in hip hop:

1. Dre - rarely makes appearances and doesnt produce that many tracks, plus takes ages
2. Snoop - features on too many albums so his appearances dont generate much buzz
3. Cube - passed his peak and is becoming less active in hip hop
4. E 40 - again passed his peak and seeing as hyphy didnt blow looks as if he may fade out of the spotlight
5. Game - fanbase not as big but still big influence on hip hop

I know theres a lot of new comers but we were saying this at the start of the year and still nothings really happening. A lot of the awad shows and magazines just seem to feature west coast artists out of respect now, not because they feel the need to. It's a shame cause i really like west coast hip hop but either the west needs to work together more or we'll have to hope the demand for west coast hip hop returns.

It's been a bad decade for the West Coast (minus 99-01)

Maybe when old dude retires the West will be better off. Then people will realize they can't rely on anyone but themselves out West.

2. Snoop - features on too many albums so his appearances dont generate much buzz
Gotta disagree. Snoop will always have buzz around him. He knows how to make hits and can sell 500K at will.

3. Cube - passed his peak and is becoming less active in hip hop
Less active? Well he did go gold independtly with zero hits while making banging music.

4. E 40 - again passed his peak and seeing as hyphy didnt blow looks as if he may fade out of the spotlight
E-40 was all fad when hyphy started becoming popular in 06. It was just the result at the industry's half ass attempt at building up the subgenre.

5. Game - fanbase not as big but still big influence on hip hop
Game is successful because of his hustle. But he had a great 06/early 07. He's proven he elevate to hip-hop's level (and then some). He's one of the positives on the West Coast right now.

This year wasn't a good west coast year. In my opinion, only WC succeed dropping a decent album. But west coast will take over in the next year, for a moment. West artists that are expected to drop an album in 2008: Dr. Dre, Yukmouth, Bishop, Clyde Carson, Mistah Fab, The Game, Ya Boy, Snoop Dogg and Crooked I. '08 looks promising  :).

But all those dudes (with the exception of Game and Snoop) were expected to drop albums in 2007.

word on bishop...i really hope his album comes out very soon in 08 even though that wont happen. Its just people do not want to hear a washed up tired and run out of rhymes nigga rapping on a debut album....the amount of time bishop will have been on aftermath and the amount of tracks he would have recorded will be wasted if his not out by next summer. People want to hear a polished rapper on the third album, not first....dre needs to show ppl there growth through the music, not in the background whilst trying to make that perfect album. Look at documentary....game was twice the rapper on doctors advocate than what he was on documentary....yet his second album is more street and west than his first album....which was polished to shit and was arguebaly the best produced cd on aftermath since mmlp......and speaking of eminem...he is the perfect example of how artist development should be shown on cd....slim shady lp was raw and it wasnt all neat but it was nice....then came mmlp....where u had a better flowing eminem and more polished cd....the right way around....

people gon hear bishop on a cd that took forever to make and his second album...people will have lost interest in him if he aint careful because he wont have shit to say anymo because all the shit he had to say will have been sittin in dres trash can or vault....because it was too raw or someshit...but thats the shit people want to hear...as a artist grows than we want to hear polished shit over polsished rhymes....

im just gettin sick of all the bullshit on aftermath and waits....i used to be hyped like a muhfucker when an aftermath album dropped....now i could give a fuck less,......shit a game album without no dre beats and no aftermath logo is worth twice the hype for me than anything thats dropped off the whole shady/aftermath/gunit umbrella in the last two 3 years.....bar busta...but thats because imma huge busta fan...and i think dre fucked that up for him in some ways too....

dre better step his game up in every respect in 2008 because make no mistake, that is a hge year for aftermath

in regards to the west....the west only ever has moment of promise anymore....when game dropped his first album, it opened a gate for as many west niggaz to run through before is quickly shut and those that got through like bishop, glasses and so on....they still waiting to be released...because nothing can get buzz on the west for a cat whos on the west without the old dre/snoop signiture...

music on the east n west is kinda pale right now....south may be making alot og weak shit but through it they come with some real fire too...thats why they gettin alot of love right now....chamillionaire aint even selling shit but he gettin more love than anyone right now for his album....because its bangin....people on the west need to put dope albums first and then they can moan...not the other way round....and the west needs its producers to step its game up....jr rothem is needed to help these niggaz out....and when a coast has dr dre on there side....but nobody on that coast can afford his shit....even snoop to a certain extent....thats pretty sad.....look at how accessable a eastcoast producer is to east coast rappers...we need to take lessons!

shiiiit

my bad about the rant...haha

I can't agree with this statement given the quality of the mixtapes and street albums that are freshly out like Signal Flow, Electric Chair... Plus some dope albums in the starting blocks such as Barliament Drunkadelic for example.

To me it's definitely not a bad year for the west coast, you just have to listen to the young WC cats.
