Sony to Supply Microsoft Xbox 360 Blu-ray Drives?
Rival manufacturers united by fate.

March 6, 2008 - Back when the next-gen DVD format wars were raging, Microsoft positioned itself in HD-DVD's corner. Though Apple's support of Blu-ray may have had some influence on Mr. Softy's format loyalties, Microsoft was also the developer of HD-DVD's HDi interactive content layer, and so had a vested interest in the format. The Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on drive was Microsoft's most material form of support for the format, but now that HD-DVD is dead, it appears as though Microsoft won't remain in mourning long at all.

Indeed, if reports from Financial Times are to be believed, Microsoft may be in bed with Blu-ray before HD-DVD has gone stiff. Speaking to Financial Times, Sony's US CEO of Electronics, Stan Glasgow, stated that Sony and Microsoft are currently in talks regarding developing Blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360.

No further details were provided as to whether Blu-ray functionality for the 360 could arrive as an integrated feature or a new add-on drive. It is quite interesting, however, that Sony is apparently more motivated to expand Blu-ray's market penetration than it is to protect one of the PS3's advantages over the Xbox 360 in the console war.

Microsoft Admits Planning Blu-ray Support
Blu-ray on 360 looking likely.

March 10, 2008 - Rumor began to stir last week that the wheels were in motion for the development of some form of Blu-ray support for the Xbox 360. Sony was the first to speak up when the US CEO of Electornics, Stan Glasgow, told the Financial Times that Sony was in talks with Microsoft concerning developing Blu-ray drives for the console system.

Word has now filtered out from similarly high-ranking Microsoft officials that the 360's future may be Blu. Chief executive Steve Ballmer recently made carefully worded statements on the issue while speaking at the Mix08 conference. "We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on… Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense."

Though Ballmer made no direct reference to the Xbox 360, it is the only platform Microsoft must support from a manufacturing point of view, and is thus very likely to be the subject of the discussions with Sony. Blu-ray support on the Xbox 360 is looking very likely now, though it remains to be seen whether such support could arrive in a new 360 SKU or an add-on drive like the HD-DVD unit that came before. Stay tuned.

I believe they've put this to rest now and claim it will not be coming out for the 360.
