Phishing is an elaborate scam to deceive, unwitting visitors into parting with their legitimate login details. A phishing site works by fooling its visitors into thinking its the real thing. What they do is make an almost perfect replica of an existing site (like a bank's site or the Paypal website). Then they send you an email with a link to the url of their fake site. The email will look like its from a bank or Paypal and would ask you to click on the link to go verify your account or something.

Gullible users would then click on the links to go the fake site and enter in their login details, which would be captured by the database running on the phishing site. Once they have your data, your online identity is stolen by these guys. They can use your credit card, make payments using your account etc.

Never respond to such emails. If you're in doubt, call up your bank or Paypal, but never click on the links in such mails.
