Who started g-funk?

me and Trauma are arguing about this, I say it was Dre (many say Dre stole the idea form Above The Law's Big Hutch...), Dre was always leaning towards it, and it evolved and bloomed full-blown in The Chronic or arguably Efil4zaggin(always into soemthin). He says warren g started it on the streetz while dre was with NWA...but warren g pretty much got his production technique from dre,and warren put more soft soul elements into it and formed his g-funk which was close. Trauma says Dre can't be g-funk because his shit's too hard...I'm not trying to diss him but i think he's confused...can we help him out?(Jakedogg i'm lookin atchu....) and he already told me he wont be deleting people for disagreeing,so speak your mind ]=) peace-Tanjint

See, The Way I See It, Dre Is Gangsta Rap. Dre Invented The Term Gansta Rap. His Songs Have Funk In Them, But It's Hard Rap.
Warren G Is G-Funk, Because His Music Is Basically Funk! It's A Smoother- R&B Flow Almost, With Just Smooth, Funky Beats And Rhymes.
Dre's Stuff Like "Lil Ghetto Boy" Could Be Considered G-Funk, But The Rest Of That Album Is So Hard & Gangsta That It Isn't G-Funk. Efil4Zaggin Didn't Have A Single G-Funk Track,Because They WEre Alll Too Hard, In My Opinion, Even "Dayz Of Wayback" Was Too Hard, Rap-Wise, It's Gangsta Rap.
Dre Never Said He Invented G-Funk, And I Think Any Fan Who Actually Knows What G-Funk Is Would Say THat Warren Started It, With 213.
Snoop's Doggystyle Album Is MUCH More G-Funk Than Either Of Dre's Albums....
So Who Started It, Dre, Or Warren? i Say Warren.

Ok.... this is gonna be a good un tanjint
this is gonna be heated for sure
One thing i think we can all agree on, is that Dre popularised it, with tracks like G Thang that epitomised it more than any other.
Now onto my opinion.
Warren G is the only person using the same 'back the day' that still calls his shit G Funk.
I'd say Dre was doing some Hard/Dark Funk (efil4zaggin) shit until he hooked up with warren and snoop, who were doing their thing. The combination of Snoops smoothness and Dres hard beats evolved into the G Funk sound.
As for traumas point of it not being hard.. I thought the appeal of it was street hardness hidden being a silky smooth exterior.
"Beatin up on your ear drums with some of that G Funk
Some of that gangsta funk
Some of that ghetto funk
Call it what you want, just don't forget the G"

I forgot to say...
ATL claim Snoop was hanging with them before he hooked with Dre.. and that they were working on Black Mafia Life.
They aren't saying Snoop bit from them.. but say that "everybody who hangs with us for a bit takes a little ATL with them".
I'm inclined to say Dre.. everyone credits Dre.. the only people who dispute it are ATL.. and that could have been due to the drama at ruthless back then.
ATLs sound on BML isnt as advanced as Dres.. and Dre seems to have taken a smoother, more evolved course from efil4zaggin -> the chronic.

I Don't Feel That Dre Is Very G-Funkish At All... G-Funk To Me Is Songs Like
Regulate
Round & Round (Twinz)
Eastside LBC (Twinz)
This DJ
I Shot The Sheriff
I Want It All
Etc. Etc.
I Think Even "G Thang" Isn't Quite G-Funk, Because It's Got Hard Hitting Snares, And Etc, And The Rap Just Sounds Kinda Hard...
Now, Of Course Don't Get Me Wrong, Dre's My Favorite, But I Don't Consider That G-Funk.

Heh, well look, Snoop was claiming G-funk on doggystyle. At that point Warren G had 1.done some demo's with snoop and nate
2.co-drum programmed deep cover with Dre
3.made Indo Smoke wit Nate and Mista Grimm
4.appeared on Deeez Nuuuts VOCALLY
...so are You saying that Dre based his whole g-funk concept on those things that a person ,who HE WAS TEACHING his damn self, did? I think Not, dre had been wanting to do g-funk since efil4zaggin(possibly because he got inspired by big hutch who claime dre stole g-funk from him, which i doubt...) and he did some g-funk on efil4zaggin, he did some g-funk on the chronic and he did all g-funk on doggystyle...Warreb G took G-funk to another place tho..not better than dre's but different but equal....no disrespect to warren g, think when it comes to g-funk warren g is just as good as dre but otherwise dre is better....peace-Tanjint

No , I'm Not Saying Warren Taught Dre Anything. I'm Saying Dre Isn't What I Call G-Funk, Warren Is.

What do you think overseer? I'm not saying G-funk is dre's,it's anybody's who works with it but i'm saying Dre started it.Warren has just as much of a claim on g-funk as dre does. But Dre started it, i'm no saying everything Dre has done is g-funk either but it's the same for warren (big bang theory).peace-Tanjint

Its not Warren Gs, Its between ATL and Dre.
The first use of the term 'G Funk' I can find on a recording is from ATL.

its by 2pac on ATLs Call It What U Want.
so it was probably common then.. 2pac wasnt a great lyracist as the rest of the verse was recycled from DUs 'Same Song'

How ironic that pac was the first LOL when was this song released? and was Pac still with DU at this point? Cuz it's weird him working with ruthless (ATL was on ruthless) since he was with death row and someone was asking if he ever worked with eazy awhile back...peace-Tanjint

I agree with U Trauma.......I mean i got the same analyse 'bout what is G-Funk vs Gangsta Rap.
But this topic is most 'bout 1 term (G-Funk) rather than on a 'style' of music.
Caus' Big Hutch & Dre may have surely talked 'bout G-Funk when they issued the 1st ATL's LP 'Livin' like Hustlers' back in '90. Dre has made some prod. on it (it was still Ruthless Thang at that time). So only 'em could say who 1st said this name. And I think it was first meanin' 4
G
angsta-
Funk
that all media has called in the early '90s Gangsta-Rap so this name stayed 4 much Westside Productionz while G-Funk became the
Word
4 Long Beach "almost R&B" dope shit.
I hope i've been clear (not sure myself)
Peace y'all !

dr. dre started it penned the name and g-funk started with the production of 100 miles and runnin EP with track like She swallowed it which was in 90' black mafia life didn't come out til 93' and dre produced or co-produced above the laws first album so, either way you flip the egg in your pan dre started it or had influance fo all other producers warren g's pre g-funk era sounded just like second rate straight outta compton stuff so BAM!
