I have noticed that in the last few years, many West Coast rappers are making songs that seem to sound more Down South or East coast because of the style of rap, the tempo, elements in the beat, and even the content.

At this point, I feel like this...true, we don't have a distinct sound that is really heavy in the mainstream right now, even though you hear our influence in a lot of songs out there. However, I don't feel there is a major problem with us making songs that have a South or East influence...but we have to realize that for them to stand out, they have to be at least AS good as the songs the South and East make to where it will attract their crowd...otherwise, the South/East won't ride to it, and the West will see them as just being imitators.

I was thinking about all of the songs from the 90's that tend to have a West Coast influence, from the South, East, and Midwest...and West Coast fans will love these tracks just as much or more than a lot of our own songs, because they were that dope. We still play Masta Ace "Inc Ride", Biggie "Juicy" "Big Poppa" and "One more chance" that were much more inspired by the West than the East at that time, JD produced tracks like "Da B side" "Funkdafied" and "Give it to you", EPMD tracks like "Chill", and even tracks that Dre produced for non-West artists like Em, D.O.C., and 50.

I feel that most of the songs we do trying to sound "current" just sound like imitation songs for that coast, especially for south songs, because we just don't have that same energy or vibe, and it sounds forced. Even when West Coast rappers hop on tracks with South cats, it is hard for some of them to match that same energy or have that catchiness that their rappers will have. I think it's cool to take some of the elements that the south uses to make hits...but we cannot try to follow their exact same formula, because it just doesn't work most of the time.

That's just my opinion...I'm one of those that doesn't feel as if we have to make songs that sound stereotypically west, but we can't expect to do anything major by sounding like other coasts if the music isn't as good.

I think you made a lot of good points in your post.  It does seem that because the "west coast" sound/artists have not been very large in the sales department lately we are hearing more songs that appeal to the fans that are purchasing music acts such as (lil wayne, soldier boy, and such).  Unfortunately the ones controlling the money seem to have way to much influence in their "investment" now a days.  They are the ones picking what beats they will pay for, and what the lyrics are about.  It's really sad.  I also blame some of the artists as well for trying to appeal to the majority.
I like that you brought up that at least if you are going to try a different style...do it well, after all if you don't do it first, or better.....why do it!

The sad part about it is that when West Coast artists try to "sound" West Coast, they still sound forced and put out a garbage product.

I don't find nothing wrong with it, its real life!  These are the rappers that the kids are listening too, you know what im saying, if a kid lives on the west coast, and he listens to down south or east coast music, then how do you think he's style is gonna be, if he tries to rap like a "west coast rapper"(what ever that stereotype is) he would be faking, cuz he don't even listen to that shit, you feel me?
its common sense, i think you guys take this music shit too too serious.
Hip Hop is a South Bronx or New York City art form, that has transended many communities in the USA.  Every different community has its own swag, but at the end of the day it is all the same, therefore there is not really a such thing as east coast or downsouth or west coast style, just variations of what people choose to talk about
and we all live in the USA, see the same shit on TV, do pretty much the same things, I don't see nothing wrong with it.

and while we are on this subject for instance, check out this rapper, he's a West Coast rapper but just did a collabo with Down South Artist, and the song is hella swagged out, with alot of flavor because of the 2 cultures.

I don't minda, but sometimes i feel that it gets a bit too much!!

I can't shake off the feeling that these westcoast rappers are somewhat ashamed of their style and in terms of music, that they feel the need to reach outside their zone!

A Little bit of east coast and south is not bad, but i would really like ti if they kept majority of thier tracks sounding west coast if it's possible...
I was listening to Talib last album Ear-drum, and i only heard one Southern style beat, and it was featuring rappers from the South, now that i can dig, and is what i'd liek to see more often IMO..But then again this does not always happen!

look, young west coast g's and old ones too!

do what the fuck you want, don't let nobody tell you how you must sound, that is the complete oppisite of hip hop!
hip hop is a culture of doing what the fuck you want, and getting your voice heard, no rules or regulations, fuck these old spectators,
their chances are up!  Do you!  If they say you got an east coast flow, take it as a compliment, basicly they saying you are lyrical,
if they say you got a down south flow, they saying your shit sounds catchy, if they say you got a west coast flow, they saying you doing gangsta rap,

see you motherfuckas got the game twisted, not every black or hispanic person in ca or la is a gang banger, they may be gangstas or thugs, but not a gangbanga, so for you to try to force people to do gangsta west coast rap, is against hip hop, thats why their is so many studio gangstas, because the community forces these rappers to be what they not.

Where the rappers thats being themselves?  not everybody in Cali likes that Mexican funk music or wants to hear that shit in every rap beat they hear, let snoop do that shit

That there is true...before the West even had it's own sound, rappers here and anywhere else sounded like NY, just because that's all rap was at the time...and for artists who grew up in the 90's, most of them did sound West or East if their region didn't have a distinct sound yet...that's just how it goes. Most younger rappers probably won't have too much about their sound that is "West" aside from their accent, unless they are from the Bay where they have had their own style this decade.

It does seem like anything that doesn't sound "gangbang" tends to be called East or South, just because people don't really associate any direct sound with L.A. when it comes to rap. Now with The Game...he had West Coast content, but even with the East Coast elements that he used, people would say he sounded "East Coast" not just because of the punchlines and gun/drug references...but because he would rap with an East Coast accent, which was questionable. If you heard him rap and he didn't mention L.A., you'd "KNOW" he was from The East, or even Chi or Detroit.

I think it's a hard call...because most West Coast fans listen to West Coast music not just because the artist happens to be from here, but because they like the way the music hits them. The problem I personally had with some of the "New West" rappers is that they are all saying the West needs new air and life...but most of the rappers sounded like C level South and East artists, or C level 90's West Coast artists.

The point I tried to make with this topic is that I personally don't think it's bad to have a sound influenced by other coasts....but if you aren't better than the cats who are from there, why would most people care to listen to you? And with that...why get mad if you aren't as successful as these artists, when you're just not as good as trying to be them as they are? Game sold because he had that East Coast style, but he made music better than 95% of the East Coast artists.
