Damn...I DJ'd at Centennial High in Compton last night.....
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:16:47 PM »
......and I realized that half of the kids there were born AFTER the Chronic and even Doggystyle.

I was doin a football game there, and everything was cool...nobody trippin or anything, but when I was going through my songs, I realized how old I am...or either how young the kids are. Most of the dudes there still seemed to know the songs....I guess it's the same way that people my age knew all the 70's and early 80's songs that dropped before we were even born, but it's still a wild thought to me. It seemed like the girls weren't into these kinds of songs as much as the dudes...I know they probably just want to hear Lil Wayne and Jeezy all day...but at least the youngsters knew about the old tracks.

I think it may be different at other schools though...if I did a HS event somewhere in the suburbs, the kids would probably look at me like I was playing some damn Barry Mandelow or somethiin. For y'all...does it seem like the youngsters know anything about, or care anything about the 90's music?

Some of the youngsters know the super popular shit like Dre and Snoop but I bet about 80% of them ain't listened to Dogg Food. Like you said Wayne and Jeezy.

It's a South dominated market at the moment. Doesn't surprise me. It'll pass, just like G-Funk did.

I dunno, basically everyday allday I used ta spin nuthin' but dat westcoast heat and shit thats poppin' for yea whip and I ain't care I was like pushin' it on 'em. But I learnt the hard way growing up so to say as a dj, that you gotta play shit that people'll dance too.So that basicially is not even weezy/jeezy so much but Ye'eezy,Gwen,Eve,Jigga,Biggie,Pac,Nelly,Chingy,Pitbull,Lil'Jon,+ add anything hot at the moment, top 40 charts.Even people mainly chicks from tha hood too when they go out to a club, they wanna dance not throw up sets an' throw bows unless the song is calling for that and it's dancable like 'southern hospitality' or 'drop it like it's hot'.So basically I give them that 'hot shit' that they can dance too, and then after the dance/club I pass 'em a 'hot new dj.thirrzty mixtape' w/ some dope g-funk/new-west shiznit on it as they leaving. So they get the best of both worlds whereaver I go. I actually dj'd this wedding last friday before I dj'd a dance and they asked for 80's/90's rock all nite, so that's what I gave 'em. I dunno I specialize in WestCoast Hip-hop and Hip-hop/R'N'B in general, but if they paying an' I gotta bring out a wide arrayment of ish? Than that's the work part of it. Finding shit you ain't feeling but keeping an open mind about it and spinning it and having fun anyway.

I feel you. With me, one of the main reasons I didn't want to become a DJ is because I've never been the one who liked music just because it was "hot"...if it wasn't as dope as it was "hot", I didn't fuck with it. Even two years ago, I never thought about being a serious DJ...but I had a laptop with hella music, especially West Coast, and some good speakers...so whenever my California people had parties at our school in Florida, it was like "ey, bring yo speakers and do the music". After a while, it went from that, to "do you DJ?" or we'd have people from out of state like "can you play Trick Daddy/Lil Jon/etc" and I slowly became a DJ from that. So the main thing I had to learn was that if I'm getting paid, it's definitely not about me...it's about pleasin the crowd, while still be able to play enough of what you like to enjoy doing it.

I used to party a lot too, so of course I didn't wanna hear West Coast ALL night...just 2-3 songs would be good for me, but I could play em in the car if I wanted to. With this situation here...I wasn't really trying to complain about the fact about what youngsters or even people my age want to hear...that's a whole different topic I could do...but it was just wild to think that if I played anything from these albums, these kids weren't even born so they don't even remember it being what it was...and the good thing is, many of these songs still work. I wasn't tryin to play many of them, but when my boy who doesn't DJ was watchin my stuff, of course he wanted to play West Coast shit...I was goin more for newer south music just because it's a FB game and you gotta keep em hype.

in compton, south central, east LA, La puente, baldwin park,
watts, or even up at the loft parties in downtown, fuck it even at clubs in hollywood,
and the dj will drop "aint no fun" and shit will go off like a mother fucker.

I just did my first HS party Saturday, and that shit was VERY interesting...quite surprising to say the least.

I'm sure every crowd ain't the same, but still...it was a HS party that was all black, and was on Broadway n 41st Place. I was payin CLOSE attention just because I had never done anything High School, but I'm sure I will, so I had to see how they reacted.

They knew some older West tracks like Y u bullshittin, Let's get high, I'd rather give you my bitch...but barely anybody knew Ain't no fun!! I am sure it's some crowds that do know it...but for this party, barely anybody was singin along with it. I played the typical commercial songs like Milli, Hi Hater, and Lollipop...and they didn't care much for those. The song that went hardest was Turf Talk "Groupie"...and I only had that song because I was goin thru hella albums one day to get songs that might work...but I had NEVER thought about playing that song at a party...so I was in shock that it went so hard for that crowd.

Hyphy mixes really good with soca and that fast pace "doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo" type island music that's super fast and all tha crowd like already swinging they arms and everything around. That latest 40 water/lil'jon track esp'. Turf drop? I think it's called. tur-tah-tur-tah-turff drop! I'm also working on my blending which is always fun.
