Ice Cube- Raw Footage Review (D~Nice Edition)
« on: October 04, 2008, 08:09:42 PM »

Decided to do a quick review on this album. Here the breakdown

Review also at http://www.soprupradio.com/

01. What Is A Pyroclastic Flow? (feat. Keith David)
Produced by John Murphy

Glad to see Keith kick this album off, and he is all over it.

02. I Got My Locs On (feat. Young Jeezy)
Produced by Pn0

Track is ehh. Not what I was expecting from Cube but the beat is very catchy. More of a hype/ra ra type track but it just seems out of place. Would work as a single imo.

03. It Takes A Nation
Produced by Emile

Man now we back on track. This song has been in rotation for a while now. Lyrically Cube is dead on and the beat is sick on this one. Would have been a nice intro song to the album but it's all good. Classic Cube.

04. Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It
Produced by Maestro

CLASSIC. Period. Beat after all this time of listening to it is still amazing to me and Cube slows slow his flow a little bit but murders this track.

05. Hood Mentality
Produced by Teak 'Da Beatsmith' Underdue & Dee Underdue
Contains a sample from "Can I" as recorded by Eddie Kendricks

This one took a little time to grow on to me. I think it was the beat at first, but now I have grown to dig it. Great concept lyrically by Cube, he had some very good topics and concepts throughout this album.

06. Why Me? (feat. Musiq Soulchild)
Produced by Teak 'Da Beatsmith' Underdue & Dee Underdue

Current single out now and one of my favorites off the album. Cube sounds a little lazy at times flow wise on it but great song and concept (video is nice too btw). I think this song will go over alot of peoples heads in this day and age but definitely it has a strong message.

07. Cold Places
Produced by Teak 'Da Beatsmith' Underdue & Dee Underdue

Teak N Dre 3 for 3 beatwise. Hook was ehh on this one but again Cube tackles the issues with America on this one. FEMA gets bitch slapped on this one.  ;D

08. Jack N The Box
Produced by Tha Bizness

Another grower for me. Love the beat, Cube just talking shit on this one. Absolutely rattles the shit out of a system. Hook is a little weak towards the end but I dig this track.

09. Do Ya Thang
Produced by Polumbo Beats

Earlier single. Great beat, another system banger bass wise. Club favorite.

10. Thank God
Produced by Teak 'Da Beatsmith' Underdue & Dee Underdue
Contains a sample from "If We Don't Make It Nobody Can" as recorded by Tom Brock

This song was alright, really not one of my favorites. Hook is a little annoying to me. Subject matter is good though. Nice beat though

11. Here He Come (feat. Doughboy)
Produced by Symphony

Kind of has a southern bounce to it. Hook was ehh once again. More of a hype track. Doughboy did his thang on there for sure.

12. Get Money, Spend Money, No Money
Produced by Emile

Man this beat is cold on this one. Now we getting back on track again. Hook again is a little bland but Cube did his thing on this one as well. Beat really sets the mood on this.

13. Get Use To It (feat. The Game & WC)
Produced by Augustine 'Embeatz'  Sumo

This song you get alot of opinions from people on it. Real talk, it's not what I expected from these 3. I know they can make something 10x better than this. Do I like the track? Yes. It has grown on me, still average but it has some club appeal to it and Game absolutely DESTROYS this beat. WC and Cube do they thing do, as I like Cube's cadence to the beat, but if this is "supposedly" the new Westside Connection I expect more than this next time.

14. Tomorrow
Produced by Warren 'Baby Dubb' Campbell

Great beat and concept once again on this song. Cube is a little shaky at times on it flow wise but overall a great track.

15. Stand Tall
Produced by DJ Crazy Toones & David 'Dizmix' Lopez
Contains a sample from "Be Thankful For What You Got" as recorded by William DeVaughn

Great sample on this one and Cube kicking that flow from back in the day on this one. One of my favorites off the album.

16. Take Me Away (feat. Butch Cassidy)
Produced by Yung Fokus & DJay Cas

Great closing track to the album, dope beat and Cube slays this track. Nice hook by Butch as well.

iTunes bonus track
17. Believe It Or Not
Produced by Emile

Can't believe this did not make the cut. Emile and Cube have great chemistry together and this track is no different. I made a bonus disc and threw this one there with this next track....

18. Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It (Remix) (feat. Nas & Scarface)
Produced by Maestro

Cube, you could not at least give us a new verse?  ;D Really the only gripe I have about this remix. Face absolutely MURDERED this song. Lyrically he was on one. Nas did his thing too, a little off topic imo but lyrically on point.

Best Buy bonus tracks
17. Don't Make Me Hurt Ya Feelings
Produced by Swizz Beatz

Beat takes a little bit to get used to, but it's Swizz, what do you expect. LOL. Seriously though this is one of my favorites. Cube's flow is on point from start to finish and he had great punchlines throughout.

18. Crack Baby?
Produced by Felli Fell

Hook is horrible on this track, but the beat knocks and the subject matter is good and funny as well, but I cannot stand the hook.

19. Why We Thugs (Live)
Produced by Scott Storch

Loved the track on LNCL, I have heard it live and in person and this live version is just as good. Love the whisper flow by Cube building into a full fledge bumrush flow on the 3rd verse.

Overall, I think this album is going to be almost like Kingdom Come was for Jay-Z. It is a more mature, grown up album that I think some people will appreciate and others will label boring. Cube pretty much for the most part delivered the album he said he was, aggresive content, socially aware and not holding back. A few tracks are more radio friendly but were still entertaining. The hooks on a good portion of this album needed some work, sounded throw together at times. Beat wise I thought this album was great. And almost all from up and coming producers. Teak N Dre did a great job on the album. I thought Guilty By Affiliation had better beats overall but this one knocks from start to finish. Reminds me a little bit of the War Disc but with more social commentary. Could have been a little bit stronger in parts but overall a great album from the West Coast War Lord.

4 OUT OF 5

I thought content wise he delivered but at times he did not execute it well and put it together if that makes sense. Subject matter was definitely a step up from the last 2.

Thanks for the review, D.  It sounds like we agree on the overall rating and most other facets of this album.  I'm surprised Hood Mentality had to grow on you though.  Chad Vader said something similar to that as well.  As far as I'm concerned, this album got downplayed real quick because of it dropping around the same time as LAX.  I don't think a lot of people took the time to soak it up and really give it a chance.  With that said I believe people are gonna come back to it later on and say "man, this shit is great" or "damn, I was sleeping."  IMO this is much better than LNCL and will get far more replay value simply because of the subject matter.  I can honestly say I don't have a favorite from it because there so many solid records on here.  However, if I were to change it I would cut "I Got My Locs On" "Here He Come" and "Get Use To It" and replace them accordingly with "Crack Baby?" "Why We Thugs Live" "It Takes A Nation Remix" "GRMMDI Remix" and "Believe It Or Not."  And Cube should have dropped a DVD with videos for all the songs on it like LNCL  :)

I agree. I think with Hood Mentality for me the beat was different so it took me a little bit to get a ear to it, but I like it. Definitely better than LNCL and I still bump that one all the time. I also hope he does do a Special Edition DVD version like LNCL. He did that after the regular version so he still has time. Maybe go back and do a proper remix to GRMMDI with a new verse from him. Yeah LAX overshadowed this album a little bit but I hope it will catch on eventually with people.

why do you guys want more people to check this album out?

you already know that quantity don't equal quality, when it comes to music discussions

True, especially here. But this along with Paris, Murs, etc I just think is as dope or more than Game or some other west coast releases that are out and get more publicity. I always see all these Game, 40 Glocc and Spider Loc threads so I decided to do a Cube review for those thinking about maybe checking it out and just dropping my 2 cents. But yeah Dre it will probably fall on deaf ears.

Yeah but every once and a while I like to remind people there is still dope music that comes from the west. No different then that Dre thread I made about all these people basically saying he is wack and needs to retire. Hold up, he still makes dope music.

it filters out a lot of trash you know  ;)

Yeah but every once and a while I like to remind people there is still dope music that comes from the west. No different then that Dre thread I made about all these people basically saying he is wack and needs to retire. Hold up, he still makes dope music.

i wasn't suggesting that you should change the formula  ;)

if it ain't broke, don't fix it   ;)

LOL! Same to you man. U, Chad, Laconic and others are always dropping dope threads about artists new and OG and doing reviews and reviews and everything so I appreciate it.

hahaha it's all good  ;)
and you're welcome  ;)

anyway, we've went a bit offtopic, so let's hope that someone picks up the pieces and continues from there  ;)

My bad. Yeah I felt like for the most part Cube stuck with specific topics, especially with the state of America at the moment. I felt like now looking back he could have made it even more political then he did but overall I was pleased with the album.
