The Gaslight Anthem - What an Awesome new band
« on: March 20, 2009, 11:56:42 PM »
I just got back from their show at The Opera House in Toronto and I can do nothing but praise these guys. There were three bands on the card; them, Orphan Choir which weren't bad, and St. Alvia Cartel which where very solid. Both had about 30 minute sets. But Gaslight came out with an hour set and a 30 minute encore ad really tore up the place.

I first heard about them because they were a young Jersey band compared to Springsteen but they are way more of a punk band than an E Street band. And they're songs have Bruce song references in the words and subtle musical influences.

When I first got their albums I dismissed them because I was expecting to hear an E Street sound by the comparisons I had read about, but after a few months I put both LPs and EP on my ipod and decided to just let them play through. I ended up pressing rewind a lot more than I thought I would and the vast majority of their tunes I really love.

But seeing them live was unreal. That's where the Springsteen comparisons become very justified, not in the musical style but in the fact that they breath new life into their songs in front of an audience. I'm still trying to process the whole show. The lead singer Brian Fallon tells sort of Boss like stories in between some songs and that's very cool. I met him after the show, shook his hand and told him I almost started Broocing. He seemed genuinely flattered by my remark. He stuck around shaking hands and signing autographs for a quite a while.

I could see big things happening for these guys in the near future.

Here they are on Letterman a little while back

and here's a couple songs by them I like

And the live show was really something. The tickets for the tour are very cheap, ranging from 13 to 16 dollars

I'd recommend it to anyone, but those not wanting to get bumped around should avoid the very front of the stage. It turns into a bit of a mosh pit, and people jump on the crowd to get carried onto the stage.

Here's a great bootleg of a TV appearance I just found

Well at least I got another reply.

It took me a while to get into. There's only like 28 songs total by them so far.

I think you'll like Angry Johnny and the Radio.

They rework some Dylan lyrics in what I think is a cool way

The Pennsylvania shows are in the next few days so you may not have the time to get into the music. But I'd still recommend going if you can. The worst than could happen is you get a few drinks and meet a few chicks at a rock show.

I'm a teetotaler. I barely ever even do one drink.

Not sure how far away from the venue you are but you should still go. There were three scalpers for the T.O. show and while they were charging triple and up before the doors openned, my bet is they dropped the prices drastically after everyone goes in. The Doors openned at 8. Gaslight wasn't on stage until almost 11. If I didn't have a ticket already I would have walked by after everyone went in, pretended to not know who the band was abd gotten the lowest price I could. My Springsteen friends do it all the time. Almost never pay more than cost and sometimes get it for lower from scalpers that have already made huge profits and need to dump tickets.

Have a happy birthday.

I was going to say maybe you can make the Pittsburgh show, until I realized how far away Pitt is from Philly. You're only other bet is the Towson show on May 7th. It's north of Baltimore and doesn't seem that far from Philly. And by May 7th you should know if you like the band or not.

Damn it, I'm going to Coachella on Friday and these guys will be there Sunday.  One of my friends might have free tickets for Sun, hopefully I'll get to check them out.  That's the closest venue they are playing from Los Angeles.
