Jimmie Johnson wins athlete of the year.

Quote
Johnson received 42 votes from editors at U.S. newspapers which are members of the AP. Tennis star Roger Federer (30 votes) and Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt (29) were the only other athletes with totals in the double- digits.

Although Tiger Woods was named Athlete of the Decade, the golfer received only nine votes for Athlete of the Year. He was tied with NBA star Kobe Bryant and slugger Albert Pujols in fourth place. Woods, who was ranked No. 1 in his sport but failed to win one of golf's majors this season, was never a top contender -- even before the sex scandal that unraveled his personal life following a Nov. 27 traffic accident.

For Johnson, the first race car driver to be named the AP's Athlete of the Year in its 78-year history, the award is the validation he's been waiting for since he began his historic run in 2006.

so you guys bitched that Tiger won for the decade? you all better go off about a Racecar driver lmfao.

I swear they are only doing this to dilute the word athlete. First a sport for retired accountants gets you athlete of the decade and now a driver gets athlete of the year.

I look at this list and I really see a joke of a bunch;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associated_Press_Athlete_of_the_Year

when I think about all the legends of sport that aren't on this I wonder. Magic Johnson once lead his team to a Championship by playing every position on the court when he had to and he's not on it, but Orel Hershiser is. What a joke. I can't even be mad at Tiger winning the decade award. It's equivalent to Grammy album of the decade.

yeah, who cares if Orel Hershiser had one of the best seasons ever by a pitcher in 88.  ::)

you just like to complain, dont you?

and yes, the Dodgers won the World Series that year.  :bandit:

I know who he is, and I know what he did, but he's not Magic Johnson. And if stats or great seasons mean so much then why is Marino's 48 TD, 5000 yard season ignored so Carl Lewis can win two in a row. For Manning's 49 TDs ignored for a third straight Lance Armstrong award? The list is a joke. Ripken only got it that year because that happened to be the year he broke the iron man streak. It's baseball for God sakes. Where Favre's award for his streak in a real hard sport to play every game? And it's not like it's amount sentimentality, because then they at least would have given Ruth one in the early 30s to make up for not having the award in the 20s. Joe Louis as one, but the undefeated Rocky Marciano doesn't. The award simply makes no sense. You win 4 in a row for winning some stupid bicycle race, but 49 straight heavyweight wins with no losses gets you nothing.

Let's look at 1977 in sports to help prove my point; Pele plays his last game. Reggie Jackson has his famous world series that gets him the name Mr October, Guy Lafleur wins the NHL MVP, is the top scorer, and the captain for the 4-0 Stanley Cup win over the Bruins. Guilermo Villas wins 2 of 4 majors in Tennis. Carlos Monzon retired as midle weight champ after winning 80 straight fights.

Which one of these great athletes was athlete of the year? None of them. Who was? Steve Cauthen. Who's that? a 100 lbs, 4 four nothing peice of shit that sat on a horse.

I was laughing until you tried to make it an argument. Lists themselves don't bother me. It's when people defend them. Call me narrow minded but when something is plain as day to me I can't see how anyone can see it any other way. Which is the heart of my Manning vs Brady crusade.

i know i said if it's a sport, you're an athlete.

but i have two beefs with this award going to Jimmie Johnson.

1. NASCAR doesn't take driving skill, it's who has the fastest, most in tuned car; at that level, everybody knows how to drive, just some cars are better than others. Jimmie Johnson couldn't win in the worst teams car.

2. the only reason he is getting this award is because he has won four straight years. but the award is "Athlete of the year.

he's basically getting a lifetime achievement award because of everything he has done in the last four years - stupid.

Forgive me but isn't Nascar the one with stock cars while F1 is based on who has the best car? I'm not a car sports guy but I always thought the Indy 500 was custom cars while Daytona was stock. Either way you still get a better work out sitting and steering a 185 mph car than you do swinging a club on the fairway. Neither Johnson or Woods are athletes, period. And looking at that list, Lance Armstrong has the most awards this decade with 4, so shouldn't he automatically win it? Once again, this list makes no sense.
