90's westcoast rappers
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:20:21 PM »
I just wanted to see if anyone else really ever thought about this. Lotta older cats including myself express disgust for songs or albums we hear coming out from some of the legends of the 90's like snoop, cypress hill and dogg pound but why do we act suprised? I mean most these guys have a better track record of putting out albums that are whatevers versus putting out solid strong albums. Especially in the last half of this past decade most if not all albums from these guys have been failures.

It's also really has not been a very inspired climate for music, these days. Very few rappers can break out of the predictable formula. They're mostly either ripping off their old music or somebody else's new shit.

Its clear to me these veteran artists see it as a job now, not a dream. They don't have the hunger for the craft, just for the cheque. Nothing wrong with that I suppose because at least these veterans have already contributed massively to the culture in the past, but its always sad to see great artists become workmen.

I think dogg pound still make good albums..
But yeah, i have to agree, alot of the time its the same old/predictable/unoriginal/non creative/played out/etc, but at the same time, whilst the yget critacised for staying stuck in the 90's, the rappers that change, like Snoop, peopel want to go backwards to the original formular, so, how can they possibly win!!??
I see what your saying though, they cant just do the exact same all the time, like talk about shooting ppl in every song, but why cnhange so dam much? if it aint broke dont fix it..
But i guess they try to make new fans of new generation and global an for the ladies an get on the radio, etc.
Just a pity that Snoop had to go AS soft as he did, he dose sound good on songs liek that but went overkill.
DPG, well its a sahme they resort to making so many down south songs(liek most west rappers) but it dose sound good at times..
To me the topic matter hasnt changed so much with alot of them, its more the production?

An artist needs to stay fresh and relevant to sell. Theyre just trying to do that. Problem is...there is a difference between being fresh and relevant and still keeping your own integrity and sound...and then just changing your own sound to chase a sale when it really isnt something you can pull off.

True, most of the time there changing the sound and chasing a sale when there replicating what someone else has done. If they want to change there sound thats cool, but at least make something thats there own sound like mike dean did with daz and kurupt on dillinger and young gotti.

The 90's westcoast artist havnt evolved much except for Snoop who is reachin out to new artist for collabos. For instance I've always respected E40 n the click, Dogg pound, Thug Life, Outlwaz, Ras Kass, Celly Cell, Yukmouth bt wat has come out of these artists lately? Shit pure plain shit. Big Syke is scared of releasin albums, Yukmouth dropped one of the wackest albums in 09 n the rest of thse cats haven't embraced changed. They can't release shit over the net for fans to enjoy n appreciate they talents, they all quite. I respect WC for Guilty by Affiliation, it showed tht he has real talent besides tht all these niggaz do is drop weak wack shit.
