Actually it didn't sell very well when it came out. It wasn't until Jay-Z's second album that people started paying attention to him. Imo its one of the best mafioso rap albums, behind Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Jay didn't really take off until "Vol. 2" with that Hard Knock Life shit and "Can I Get A...". Thing about Jay is he has longevity. As the game changes and new fans with different tastes move in, Jay can still hold his own on the charts. It's comforting for people to call him overrated but I don't think people give him his due like they should.
