Yo What's up Axle, let me put you up on some info about Champ. This project is real close to my heart, since I worked for East/West Atlantic (back when Missy was part of Sista etc. etc.) and worked on getting this project to break outside of NYC. Actually this goes to show how record labels will spend large amounts of money on a project and just let it go and recoup it as a "tax write-off." East/West Atlantic actually released 2 singles "Keep Shit On The Real" and "Sistas Betta Recognize." They also shot videos for both that were released. "Keep Shit..." was remixed by Pete Rock and there was a video for both version (Pete Rock and Original). I happened to be in the Pete Rock version of the video (as if anyone cares, lol). But a lot of fools were hatin' on Champ, because of the East/West mixture and personally she killed all them tracks. I remember talkin' with one of my homegirls who worked at East West and the great DJ Mister Cee came through to pick up some records and we talked about Champ and he said that a lot of folks, especially DJ's were not feeling her, because "she didn't know if she wanted to be east or west-coast" I disagreed and told her that's the problem with artists, they are too "regionalized" and they need to break out of that and this was a good litmus test to show that, we debated, but we still stuck to our guns. I did disagree with how East/West approved her video of lo-lo's up and down 42nd Street and all up in the Bronx, but shit, it's the norm to have Low-riders in East-Coast artists videos.Champ caught a bad one on that. I felt that they should of filmed a version in LA and the Pete Version in the Bronx and blend the two, but that fell on deaf ears. If more heads were more open-minded to what she was tryin' to do, then she might of been the east-coast version of Yo-Yo. But the industry and public fell in love with The Brat at this time (when her first album dropped on So So Def) and just left Champ in limbo. This type of thought permeated throughout the industry and since she didn't create enough a buzz for the label, they dropped her I think it was a month or less before her scheduled release date. She got a lot of love from heads here in Cali, I think more so than in NYC, but that maybe debated.Actually Champ got her start battlin' and takin' fools out at the weekly/monthly Lyricist Lounge battles, when they first started in storefronts and she was in the Source's Unsigned Hype column, based on the reputation she gathered for battlin' and winning all the time. After she got dropped she went back to the Edenwald PJ's of the Bronx, became a mother (which was a few years after she was released from Atlantic). I was at this time working for Razor Sharp Records and when Rza wasn't handlin' his business like he should of is when this whole Prtoect Ya Neck Records thing occured (THAT whole situation, is a movie in itself). People parted from The Wu and all these "affiliates" sprang up.Anyways, I guess for money and trying to get back into the game, they paired her up with them other two females (who are really wack, the story about those two is funny as hell, but too much damn typing as it is), but Deadly Venoms didn't go anywhere, they tried to get some media by sayin' that Sprite took their whole idea about the commercial Sprite did with the "other" Venoms (the chick with eyebrows that was down with Jay Z, I think Missy, and two others, that was so long ago, I forgot). But I'm glad she is still in the game. Yo Axle if I knew how to upload and record shit, I would send you some remixes and tracks that never made the album, that Champ gave me personally as well as the videos, but everything is on tape and I don't know how to transfer all that stuff. But where did you get the CD? If you have any extras let me know. All my shit is on tape.
Quotewhats up, thanks for all the info manalso i was on the phone with easki the other day and i asked him (he and CMT produced alot of the album so i thought he knew) and he told me she got pregnant and got a baby and that was basically the reason... but your info was real interesting too.. the album is knockin!!peace
