root canal or tooth removal?
« on: November 20, 2010, 02:39:33 PM »
And old cavity from my youth has gotten worse and is touching a nerve and causing a lot of pain, as well as screwing up my whole left side. I either clean it and get a root canal to save the tooth but risk it happening again 5 to 10 years from now or remove the tooth now and replace it with an ivory bridge a year from now.

It's the second last molar on the left side so it won't be visible unless you're looking for it. Any advice?

i've had two wisdom teeth out in the past couple of years and my attitude was that if its gonna keep being a problem i'd rather have just have it out and be done with it. dentist was happy to do the first one but didn't think the one on the other side was really that neccesary. instead of wait i just insisted i wanted it out as soon as was realistic. just another thing to keep flaring up otherwise.

I've already gotten all 4 wisdom teeth out at once, and I couldn't chew for a month after wards. This would be a single back molar, and there'd be a space in between two molars for the first year or so until I get it bridged. Or I get it fixed and risk doing the pull out and bridge ten years down the road.

When I was about 13 I had braces and knocked out several teeth, fractured mandible etc. I had several root canals as a result. Turns out 2 of them didn't really work, the roots all dissolved, teeth started to discolor etc. If u go the root canal route, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that u will have to revisit it a few years down the line refilling your teeth etc.

I'd just say fuck it and get the bridge. That way it's over and done with.

Yeah, that what I'm leaning towards. I hate fillings and the last thing I want is a partially filled tooth that still disrupts the nerve it's touching. And the bridge can wait, or not even come. You'd only be able to see the space if I open wide and showed you my mouth or did a huge smile and even then you could barely see anything.

Thanks for the point of view.

ROOT CANAL ON A MOLAR REQUIRES A CROWN NOT A FILLING.

BRIDGES ARE FOR OLD PEOPLE ;D

TAKE CARE OF IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN, BEFORE YOU GET A BAD INFECTION.

So you recommend a crown over a pull? I still here they cause problems later on.

A DENTIST WILL TELL YOU THE BEST OPTION.

A CROWN WON'T LAST FOREVER BUT IT'S BETTER THAN
REMOVING AN OTHERWISE STRONG TOOTH.

OH AND THEY'RE ALWAYS COMING OUT WITH NEW
TECHNOLOGY/MATERIEL/PROCEDURES FOR CROWNS.

SO IF YOU REMOVE YOUR TOOTH NOW, YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK.

IF YOU HAVE INSURANCE TAKE CARE OF IT.

Actually the Dentist is a family friend and was sort of pushing me towards removal which isn't even done by him, but be an oral surgeon, and he told me that because the cavity is so old and so deep and already hitting the nerve there is a high chance it won't fully heal the because it might always be pressing the nerve someway. And that pulling it would automatically heal everything. Also, if I choose in a year or two to get an ivory bridge, that fake tooth will also protect the two molars around it and long term it may be better anyway.

Basically, my current tooth has been filled so many times since it came in at 12 years old that it's hardly real anymore anyway. So that's why I'm thinking to just pull it out. My main fear is that I've lived with this nerve related discomfort for over 10 years, first the wisdom teeth and now this and if pulling this tooth gives me the best chance to end that discomfort I will take it. Over keeping a tooth and risking another ten years of discomfort.

I'm thinking now that it was never the wisdom teeth that were bothering me so much, but this nerve affected by the cavity.

i was faced with this decision a few years ago, i didnt have dental nor did i have the stacks to pay out of pocket and my shit was on FIRE. so i opted to have it removed...at first it feels real wierd and you kind of have to readjust your chewing habits (im sure with an exposed nerve your already doing that) but no one would notice but if i was given the chance i woulda kept my tooth and got a root canal so for me its a question of can you afford it or not. do you have insurance?

I can cover the costs no problem. And I've already learned to chew after losing teeth when I pulled all 4 wisdom teeth, and the side in question was so sensitive afterwards that most of my major chewing is on the other side anyway. I've dealt with this nuisance of discomfort and slight pain since 1999, if the oral surgeon tells me it goes away by pulling this tooth then I'm taking it out.

My dentist already told me it's a risky root canal as far as full recovery from bothering the nerve. My main concern isn't what's cheaper, it's what is more comfortable with my mouth. If I really don't like the way it feels when I chew I'll just get a bridge.
