One of the biggest mysteries in hip-hop today to me is the huge amount of love Young Jeezy's music gets. I'm not going to sit here and say he's wack or anything, I listen to his stuff aswell, but I really don't see anything special that he does that means he deserves the success he's had over any other random street dope rapper.

Anyone care to explain his appeal to me?

Had the same release date last year didn't it? That didn't happen. Don't be surprised if it happens again.

I doubt I'll like more than two songs. He hasn't really dropped anything better than pure average music since his debut.

However, that single "F.A.M.E." with T.I. is incredible. Probably one of his best songs ever.

I think the same can be said for most mainstream southern rappers.

Thank you!  I get so tired of people (in general) talking about and criticizing shit they don't have a single clue about.  I get not liking somebody but not liking somebody and acting like you're checking their craft out at tha same time is a contradiction and you're lying.

Just keep it real and keep your opinions to yourself if you're not a fan.  If you're actually going to check it out say something like "i've been hearing alot about so and so so i wanna check it out", "i like the beat to that song so i'ma buy/download this", etc.  It's a dick-move to confuse an "honest opinion" with "hating".

Anyone care to explain his appeal to me?

Ooh thank you for giving me an excuse to do some stanning! :D

Sure his formula is quite simple and followed by many others too. Basically "trap" lyrics on top of 808/909 beats with synthesizer melodies that could be from the soundtrack to "Scarface". But hey that's exactly what I wanna hear when I put on a Jeezy record. And the difference is that Jeezy doesn't half-ass it like so many others. In fact he does it really well.

He has a good ear for beats and uses some of the best producers who do this style (Don Cannon, Drumma Boy, JUSTICE League). And making these kind of beats isn't as easy as it may seem. Basically you want them to be catchy but not too corny/pop and that's an easy thing to fuck up.

He has a great voice which is instantly recognizable but still clear/comprehensible. Despite this his voice doesn't get annoying or boring very fast. Actually I feel this is true for many of the "greats". Just think about Pac, Snoop, Eminem....

The lyrics may seem a bit simple but I feel that they have a lot of depth to them actually. For example something like "wear black all week and stack all that, and these bitches do too now ain't that sad". Now some people will hear that and just be like "he rhymed "that" with "sad" and even that was kinda forced lol he's the worst lyricist ever". And the message is hardly some really insightful wisdom either as even a 5-year-old could tell you playing the dope game can get you killed. But, for some people, when it's presented like this where you have to connect the dots and then start thinking about the widows who wear black because they are in mourning of their man who died because one night the camouflage of black clothes just wasn't enough protection... Well it can really make you think, perhaps reconsider some risks you're taking and make you realize how "the stress" doesn't affect just you but maybe important people around you as well. Or maybe I'm just tripping and have completely misunderstood what he meant. :D But whatever, even if so it's still "the shit" to me.

What's also important is that the song wasn't no preachy bullshit or some "oh how horrible" social porn but those were just a couple of lines from an upbeat celebration of drug dealing. He has a good balance of the negative and the positive.

And honestly Jeezy does spit some real game, like in some song he recommends that you spend your earnings on buying nice things for your mom because the cops won't confiscate those when they come to get you. ;D Haha that shit is hilarious - because it's true - but despite being hilarious it's also some good advice. How can you hate on that?

And I haven't even got to what he's actually known for, his adlibs. He really does them well. Sometimes it's like a dialogue between the adlibs and the "regular" lyrics. Sometimes it's just cool how he reuses some adlibs in surprising places flipping the original meaning. That part of his music is still kinda "magic" to me, better not overanalyze it or I'll just embarass myself.

On a very personal tip, which I obviously don't expect to be shared by many, I like that he doesn't rap too much about getting drunk or prostitution (two things that I hate). Might seem silly but honestly way too many rappers are a tricks or (wannabe) pimps, some I'd even consider ho's. And tight alcohol advertising laws or whatever seem to have made music an advertisement billboard for the alcohol industry. Both annoy the fuck out of me. No pointless gore either.

Instead he raps a lot about weed which suits me just fine as I love weed so much I'm almost ashamed to say. Jeezy isn't a "pot professor", like say Devin the Dude, but he does seem to know what he's talking about. He certainly doesn't front by trying to use "weed vocabulary" but then using it wrong which is something that REALLY gets to the weed nerd in me lol, and is also very common among rappers.

And by the way I'm not talking about his best songs only. Many artists have some good songs but Jeezy has been very consistent during his entire career. I can pretty much put any one of his records on and then spend the next hour staring into emptiness, nodding my head with a retard smile on my face. ;D That's why he's the best.

Now to actually get on topic... this CD, or whatever is Jeezy's next CD, I will buy no matter what. I feel like I owe him already for the great mixtapes he has released for free this year and last year. Not that I don't expect it to be good. Hope the December date sticks. The fact it's said on the record label's website and not just a random blog is a good sign.
