One year on: DJ Quik's 'Book of David'
« on: May 06, 2012, 09:37:15 AM »
So it's been roughly a year since The Book of David came out, and now that it's had some time to sink in, how do people rate it in terms of Quik's discography?

For me it's definitely up there with Safe + Sound and Rhythm-ail-ism in terms of great beats, minimal guest spots and replayability.  Lots of different types of tracks on this one too, which makes it a solid effort in my opinion.  I hope Quik makes at least one more solo joint.

I'm listening to "So Compton" right now lol

For me there's a lot of tracks that are good, but I just skip for some reason.  To me safe and sound and rythmalsism are stand out albums, then B&O, then all the others are on the same level.

Thought it was hit and miss.

Production wan't that rich, and Quik was rappin slow and simple stuff like he was imitating the current sound. I liked the track dissin the shit out of his sister, but it felt like his head wasn't right on a few tracks and the vibe overall was less chill than his older stuff.

i still think that it is maybe one of his worst albums ... :o

i would give it a 2,5/5

killa dope is the only song that i still bump from time 2 time

the few beats on trauma and blqkout were just incredible  :-\

The album is good, but the problem is that 'So Compton' is so great that I usually skip all the other songs.

I never could get into this album. The real gold behind Quik is that not only is he one of the sickest producers ever, but he's also an underrated rapper. Dudes lyrics are usually sick and witty. The lyrics on this album were just trash. Don't know if he fell of, was unmotivated, or if he was trying to mimmick these new rappers flow, but in any even this is one of his worst albums along with Way 2 Fonky.

i need to give this album another try. the production sounds polished but the overall product sounded uninspired & boring too me. only songs I really dug were Nobody and the outro with Quik's Groove. I think that Way 2 Fonky is light years ahead of this album.

I'm still diggin it! My favorite song is "Killer Dope". The rest of the album is pretty good, but there are some skippers. It's not his best album, and the songs he left off the record sounded better than most that were left on. It was definitely a step ahead of Trauma and Blaqkout for me though.

Hope he makes another one soon!

i hope he makes another one in the vein of safe & sound and rhythmalism. all the old elements in place.

I think niggaz on this forum need to get their ears checked!

The Book of David is, in my view, DJ Quik's best album, on par with Rhythmalism and better than Safe & Sound.

Every track on BOD is excellent and worth listening to, with the exception of Babylon and Poppin. Every other song should be heard. Many songs on this album have entered my Top 25 most played songs, up there with classics from Pac, etc.

The sequence of Nobody - Boogie Till You Conk Out - Flow For Sale - So Compton is the best sequence on any rap album ever, fuck what ya heard.
