One year on: DJ Quik's 'Book of David'

Am i the only one who thinks "Do Today" is pure brilliance?

Jon B on the hook and the best summertime beat i have heard since the 90's.

Flow for Sale is also sick.

Fire and Brimstone is awesome.

Real Women is a banger.

There are some mediocre songs, like Babylon and Across the Map. Didn't feel these at all.

Overall a good album, probably 3.5/5.

It is pretty clear his fans have a certain type of Quik that they love - the "So compton", "We still party" type of vibe. An album full of these would be epic.

Real Women, Flow for sale. I forgot about those ones. I'd include these too. Fire and brimestone, and do today are good as well, but I just found myself skipping to these 5-6 tracks everytime, comparing it to the likes of Rhythm-alism, quik is the name, balance and options or Safe & sound, it didn't really have that consistency through out the album. The good tracks are scattered, which means you can't just put it on, and leave it on. Quik built up a reputation for putting out solid work for years - albums that were Westcoast classics without ever loosing his touch, but now it seems as if he dilutes his albums and fills half of them up with either experimental garbage (see: Blaqkout) or commercially advertising music to reach out to current artists. That last part I have no issue with, as he needs to demonstrate his diversity to get work, but damn, at least bring the fans one more solid album, or just drop that double CD of lost tapes during the Safe& Sound - Balance & option era - Arguably his greatest period

'Do Today' is pure brilliance yes. i'd take a whole album of that sound ten times over.

lmao @ anyone rating book of david lower than blakquot...blakqout is THE blemish in quiks discography...

and book of david still bumps..despite the 2 or 3 terribly weak tracks (hydromatic...ugh)

trauma or unda the influence...those albums didnt do much for me. neither imo is as good as book of david, i cant explain it this shit grew on me...ive been traveling alot lately and it was in my deck for a week or more straight and i got to liking it.

I liked the album, So Compton, Flow for Free, Nobody, Do Today, Real Women, Killer Dope, The End & Time Stand Still are the best tracks. I felt like the Ice Cube joint could've been replaced by the Remix version of it, that was added on his Mixtape. Also, i would've replaced Babylon and would've added G-Shit ft.KK and the Quik Groove as a regular track. One last thing, So Compton could've been better imo with DJ Quik verse and maybe Suga Free

i thought the fixxers album was pretty good.  it was really different than quik's typical style, but he said he was going for his version of the dirty south sound (aka dirty west).  i thought it was a great attempt at showing the south how to make their sound more musically inclined, melodic, and overall with a higher integrity.  but you're right, the full album was never released through interscope officially (the single and video were, however), but has since been released on itunes in it's entirety.

i'm a long time fan of quik's music and this shit is not jammin' at all. usually when i'm anticipatin' somethin' from quik it's high standard and flawless. this album has no businesss being mentioned in the vein of safe&sound and rhythmalism or even balance and options and trauma. this album is chops !!!!!!!!! i hope he truly goes back to his older productions when creatin' some new shit. back to g one and rob bacon and etc.

better than trauma, that album didn't have much longevity after the years passed. don't think i'll be saying the same thing about BOD, tho inconsistent for parts.

It is a great mature sounding album. I know it's not Rhythymalism or S+S but I would rather him put something together new and run the risk of it being an average album than re-creating a sound more than 10 years old.
Still gets played but I'm a Quik stan so it's a bias opinion.

of course its dope (all quik albums are) but i think BOD has the superior cuts overall. 'Do Today', 'Luv Of My Life' and 'So Compton' for example are better than anything on Trauma, the kind of material i always wanna hear from Quik. Trauma is good but like Quik himself said, the production is more barebones. Depends if you like that or his warmer, more lavish soundscapes.

I agree that So Compton beat is better than the whole trauma beats, but imo Trauma had better songs, i disliked Luv Of My Life
