Phil Jackson , to the poeple that say hes just a good coach
« on: February 24, 2003, 12:07:14 PM »

Phil Jackson gets lil credit from fans.  Why? Because they think since Phil has had great players on his teams, those are the only reasons he has 9 rings.  WEll first of all not any coach could have done this. Doug Collins couldnt do it during the Pre Phil Bulls, and Del Harris couldnt do it during the Pre Phil Lakers.  So what is special about him?  The way he can transform a group of stars into a team?  The way he controlled JOrdan to become more of a team player?   The guy that suggested Jordan to develop a 3 pt threat?  He only shot 18% before he met Phil, then his 3PTFG% rose dramatically.  Or is it the way PHil got Shaq and Kobe to play together and not bitch?  Or is it the Zen?!  WELL u know what, its all of the above.  Thanks to Phil, my fav. team has gotten 3 rings.

Here is a little segment from a biography of Phil at NBA.com, so is it the players or Phil?

Jackson's break came on Dec. 17, 1988. The Bulls trailed by 14 points when the high-strung Collins was ejected early in the game. Jackson took over in what normally is a placeholder role, tinkered with the team's defense and told the players to just go out and play. Forward Horace Grant later told The New York Times, "It was like we were let out of a cage. We won the game because we were so relaxed -- and we knew that Phil should become a head coach." The following spring the Bulls lost to Detroit in the conference finals. Two months later Collins was out and Jackson was in.

Big changes were quick in coming. First came an emphasis on defense. Jackson unleashed Jordan and Scottie Pippen ("the Dobermans") on opposing teams through relentless presses, traps and double-teams. Then Jackson threw out the isolation plays that had been designed for Jordan and worked Winter on implementing the triple-post or triangle offense, in which constantly moving players have a variety of passing and scoring options at their disposal. It took a while for Jordan to buy into the new scheme, but once he did, the Bulls were unstoppable.

i agree with both of you that you need some good players as well but phil does not get the credit he deserves most of the time too......like said what happen to the lakers before phil??? it was the same team.......he is a great coach and one of the all time greats.......but players do play a  big role.......but you cant take anything from phil

It's interesting, in virtually every sport but bball, baseball and american football, that the manager or head coach has sole choice over signings.

One reason people like Phil, though extremely capable, can't be compared to early bball coaching greats is cause he doesn't have control over his signings; if he wins with a shitty team, he qualifies, but no coach can.

That, in short, is one of the two reasons that franchise sports suck.

to SGV, Phil and Tex created an offense for Jordan, so he can perform at its finest, it took him a year to master it.  TO me its 50/50.  Especially with Phil.

phil is the greatest coach of all time..look at how far the lakers were getting in the playoffs before phil arrived...same with the bulls....phil takes good teams and turns them into great teams...average players to good players, good players to great players(scootie pippen), and great players to all time great players..if jordan didnt take a couple years off to play baseball(the bulls still almost went to the finals) we'd be talking about 11 titles

Still hate the Lake, but I'll give Phil his props. I think he's a good coach. Talent or not, his system works. I don't think there is a franchise in the NBA that would turn down phil if he wanted to coach there. I sure as hell would want him for the pacers. :)

If I had 9 rings I'd wear em all together
Cause I don't care where I belong no more
What we share or not I will ignore
And I won't waste my time fitting in
Cause I don't think contrast is a sin
No, it's not a sin

Phils a good coach. Great? I dunno. His record, especially in the playoffs is crazee. But u know, the talent he's always had playin for him...takes away from him. His record looks good, but how much of that...was really him? I dont think many coaches in the league right now...would have been unsuccesful with what the former Bulls were playin with. If i give him anything, he knows how to work with people. Not necessarily create talent. But work with Egos. Look at the Egos he's had to balance. Jordan/Pippen/Rodman....Kobe/Shaq. The Lakers were one of the biggest underachieving teams in the league, until Phil took over. But regardless, he's still a coach. And still wont get credit. And maybe he shouldnt. College coaches are more real coaches anywayz. lol
